EDD eligibility interview scheduled for Monday - need urgent advice on what to say

I just got approved for an eligibility interview with EDD for this coming Monday (2 days from now!) and I'm totally freaking out. This is my first time ever filing for unemployment after being laid off from my healthcare admin job last month. They didn't give me any specific reason for the interview in the notification - just said it was 'standard procedure'. I have no idea what questions they'll ask or how to prepare. Will they try to trip me up? My former employer was kind of difficult during the layoff process, so I'm worried they might have said something negative. Does anyone have experience with these interviews? What kind of questions do they typically ask? How formal is it? Any advice would be so appreciated!!

Don't stress too much - these eligibility interviews are pretty standard, especially for first-time claimants. The EDD rep will mainly ask about why your employment ended to verify you qualify. Be prepared to explain: 1. Exact date your employment ended 2. The reason for separation (layoff in your case) 3. Whether you received any severance pay 4. Any other income sources you currently have Just be honest and straightforward. Have your termination letter or any documentation from your employer ready. The interview usually lasts about 15-20 minutes. As long as you were truly laid off and didn't quit or get fired for misconduct, you should be fine.

Thank you so much!! This makes me feel a bit better. I do have my termination letter that says 'position eliminated' so hopefully that helps. Do you know if they record these calls? And will my former employer be on the line too??

I just had my interview last week! They asked me like 10 questions about why I wasn't at my job anymore and if I was looking for work. The lady was pretty nice actually. Just don't contradict whatever info you put on your application.

That's great to hear it went smoothly for you! Was yours by phone or online? Mine says phone interview but I'm not sure if I need to be near a computer too.

Mine was just phone. Took like 15 mins tops. They called exactly when they said they would.

THEY NEVER CALLED ME FOR MY INTERVIEW!!! I waited by the phone for 3 HOURS and nothing!! Then my claim was put on hold for another MONTH because I "missed" the interview. When I finally got someone on the phone after 200+ calls, they said I was supposed to call THEM at a specific number that was nowhere in the notification!!! The EDD system is BROKEN!!!! Good luck getting through to anyone if something goes wrong!

Yeah after 6 weeks of no pay and making 30+ calls a day! Make sure you read ALL the fine print on your interview notice. And screenshot EVERYTHING.

I've been through several of these interviews over the years. Here's what you need to know: - The interview is to determine if you're eligible for benefits based on the reason you're no longer working - For a layoff, they'll verify it was due to no fault of your own (like position elimination) - They may ask about your availability to work and job search efforts - They'll verify any income/severance you reported - If there are discrepancies between what you and your employer report, they'll ask for clarification Your former employer won't be on the call, but EDD will have already contacted them to get their version of events. Since you mentioned having documentation that states "position eliminated," have that handy. If for some reason you miss the call or the interviewer doesn't call when scheduled, use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to EDD quickly. They have a service that helps you bypass the usual phone wait times and can get you connected to an agent usually within an hour. There's a video demo here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Stay calm, be honest, and you'll be fine!

Thank you for the detailed info! I hadn't thought about them already contacting my employer. I hope their story matches mine... the layoff was pretty sudden. Has anyone actually used this Claimyr service? Seems too good to be true after hearing how impossible it is to reach EDD.

I used Claimyr last month when my payments got stuck in pending for no reason. It actually worked - got through to EDD in about 45 minutes after trying on my own for days. The agent fixed my issue right away. Worth it when you're desperate to get through.

Oh that's a good point - I should double check all my pay stubs and W2s just to be sure. I'm terrible with numbers when I get nervous!

I had an eligibility interview back in January. I was nervous too but it was fine. The lady just asked me basic questions from a script about my last day of work and why I wasn't working there anymore. But here's the weird thing - they called me from a blocked number! So make sure you answer ANY calls that day, even if they look like spam. I almost missed mine because I thought it was a telemarketer!

Thank you for the heads up! I hadn't thought about the blocked number thing. I'll definitely answer everything that day.

The interview is really to make sure you qualify for benefits. Since you were laid off (not fired for misconduct or quit voluntarily), you should have a straightforward case. Key points to remember: - Be consistent with what you stated on your initial application - Have exact dates ready (last day worked, when notified of layoff) - If you received any severance, vacation payout, etc., have those amounts and dates ready - Explain that you're able and available to work full-time - Be ready to describe your job search efforts (they might ask) I work in HR and have been on the employer side of these calls. As long as both you and your former employer agree it was a layoff due to position elimination, your benefits will be approved. The interview is typically just verification.

Thank you for the HR perspective! That's reassuring. I just realized I don't remember if I listed my last day of work as my final day in the office or the date on my termination letter (which was 2 weeks later because of severance). Hope that doesn't cause problems...

Just clarify that during the interview if it comes up. Explain you received two weeks of severance following your last physical day of work. They're used to these situations and can note it in your file. The important thing is to be transparent about dates and payments.

Quick tip: Write down notes about your employment separation before the call. It's easy to get flustered and forget important details when they're asking questions rapid-fire. Having a little "cheat sheet" with dates, reasons, and any severance info will help you stay calm and consistent. Also, make sure your phone is fully charged and you're in a quiet place with good reception. The worst thing is getting disconnected mid-interview and then not being able to get back through to EDD!

That's a great idea about the notes - I'm definitely making a cheat sheet tonight! And I'll make sure to be somewhere with good reception. Would be a nightmare to get disconnected.

one more thing nobody mentioned - the interview slots are super specific like 10:15-10:30am and sometimes they call right at the beginning and sometimes at the very end of that window. so dont panic if they dont call right at the start time, but be ready the whole time!!

Good to know! Mine is scheduled for 2:45pm so I'll make sure to be ready from 2:45-3:00. So nervous but feeling much more prepared now thanks to everyone's advice!
