EDD claim stuck pending after reporting cash payment from one-day job
I'm seriously freaking out about my EDD claim status. I got temporarily laid off from my warehouse job last month and filed for unemployment. While waiting for approval, I picked up ONE DAY of work helping at a food truck event. The owner paid me $150 in cash at the end of the night. I honestly reported these earnings on my EDD certification, but here's where it gets weird - the food truck guy never took my SSN or any tax info. I even mentioned I'd be reporting the income on my unemployment claim and asked if he needed my info, but he just shrugged it off. Now my claim has been stuck on "pending" for almost 3 weeks! I'm worried EDD is trying to verify this employment but can't because there's no official record. Will my entire claim get denied? Has anyone dealt with something similar? I'm really stressing about bills right now.

Your claim is pending because EDD needs to verify the income you reported, but they can't find any record of it in their system. This happens with cash jobs. You'll need to speak with an EDD representative to explain the situation. They'll probably schedule a phone interview to determine eligibility. Just be honest about what happened - you reported income from a one-day cash job where the employer didn't collect your information. The fact that you reported it works in your favor.

•Thanks for explaining! Do you know how long I might have to wait for this phone interview thing? My rent is due next week and I'm getting really nervous...

•This is TERRIBLE advice. The system flags these discrepancies, and "waiting it out" could result in an automatic disqualification. The OP needs to be proactive and contact EDD to explain the situation before they make a determination based on incomplete information.

I had this EXACT same thing happen when I worked a weekend craft fair! Paid in cash, reported it honestly, then BAM - pending for almost a month!!! EDD is sooooo frustrating with this stuff!

•What ended up happening with your claim? Did it eventually switch from pending to paid without you doing anything?

•No, I had to call like 50 times before getting through. When I finally talked to someone, they scheduled an eligibility interview for the following week, and after that my payments started processing again. The whole thing took almost 6 weeks total 😫

This is a common issue when there's a discrepancy between what you report and what EDD can verify through employer records. Since you honestly reported the income (which was the right thing to do), you need to speak with an EDD representative to explain the situation. They will likely schedule an eligibility interview to discuss this specific issue. In the meantime, continue certifying for benefits as normal each week. After your interview, they can release all pending payments if they determine you're eligible. I strongly recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD representative quickly. They'll connect you to EDD without the hours of redial frustration. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. I was in a similar situation with verification issues and they got me through to a rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through.

•I'll check out that Claimyr service - anything is better than calling repeatedly and getting nowhere. Should I mention specifically that this was a cash job when I talk to EDD? I'm worried they'll think I was trying to work under the table even though I reported it.

•Yes, be completely honest that it was a cash payment and that you tried to provide your information to the employer but they didn't take it. The fact that you reported the income shows you were being truthful, which works in your favor. EDD deals with these situations regularly - they just need to document it properly.

my claim got stuck in pending last year for 2 months!! and i never worked anywhere else. edd just randomly flags things and makes u wait. its total bs. they hold ur money hostage and dont even tell u why. might not even be about that cash job. could be literally anything.

This is a relatively straightforward issue that requires direct contact with EDD. When you report income that can't be verified through their automated systems (which is what happens with cash payments), it triggers a manual review. Here's what you should do: 1. Call EDD first thing in the morning (8:00 AM) when their lines open 2. Explain that you reported income from a one-day cash job where the employer didn't collect your information 3. Request an eligibility interview to resolve the pending status 4. Continue certifying for all weeks as normal 5. Be prepared to provide details of the work (date, hours, pay amount, employer name/contact if possible) The key is getting through to a representative. Once you explain the situation, they can usually schedule an interview within 1-2 weeks. After the interview, if everything checks out, they'll release all pending payments. In the future, if you take any temporary or one-day jobs, always insist on providing your SSN and getting some form of documentation, even for cash payments.

I'm going to try calling tomorrow morning. Should I just keep hitting redial over and over? I tried calling twice last week but gave up after being on hold for an hour each time.

•The EDD phone system is incredibly frustrating. Yes, you basically need to keep redialing until you get past the "we're experiencing high call volume" message. Once you get into the hold queue, don't hang up even if it says the wait is long. Most people give up after 20-30 attempts, but it sometimes takes 50+ calls to get through. Be persistent.

Let me clarify something important here: When you report income that EDD cannot verify through their database, it automatically flags your certification for review. This isn't necessarily bad - it's actually protection against fraud. Since you reported the income honestly, you're in a much better position than if you hadn't reported it and they discovered it later. What's happening is your claim needs what's called a "wage investigation" where EDD verifies earnings that don't appear in their system. They do this through an eligibility interview, which will be scheduled after you speak with a representative. During the interview, they'll ask: 1. The name/contact of the employer 2. Date(s) worked and hours 3. Amount earned and how you were paid 4. Why you believe the employer didn't report the wages Be prepared with all this information. Since it was only one day of work and you made a good-faith effort to report correctly, this should be resolved in your favor. The key is getting someone on the phone to schedule that interview.

•This is super helpful - thank you! I think I can remember the food truck's name (it was something like "Tasty Bites") but I don't have the owner's contact info. Will that be a problem?

•Not having complete contact information isn't ideal, but it's understandable for a one-day cash job. Provide whatever details you can remember - the business name, location where you worked, and approximately when you were paid. The more information you can provide, the easier it will be for EDD to process your case. They understand these situations happen, especially with temporary or event-based work.
