EDD claim says no income reported despite working 9 months - what's happening?
I just got laid off last week from my warehouse job where I'd been working for 9 months (since June 2024). I filed my unemployment claim yesterday through UI Online, but when I checked my account today, there's a message saying I 'don't have enough income reported in the base period to establish a claim.' How is this possible? I was making $22/hour, full-time with occasional overtime. My employer definitely took taxes out of every paycheck. Is this because my income was too recent? Do I need to wait longer to file? Or did my employer mess something up with their reporting? I'm completely confused and starting to panic because I have rent due in 2 weeks. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice on what my next steps should be? Should I file an appeal or just call EDD directly?

This is a base period issue. EDD doesn't count your most recent completed quarter plus the current quarter you're in when calculating eligibility. They look at the 4 quarters before that, which is why you're getting that message. If you only worked 9 months and got laid off in April 2025, a lot of your work history falls in what they call the 'lag quarter' and current quarter. You should file using the Alternate Base Period (ABP). It's designed exactly for situations like yours where your recent work history doesn't show up in the standard base period. Call EDD and specifically request they review your claim using the ABP. More info here: https://edd.ca.gov/en/unemployment/Understanding_Base_Periods

•Thank you for explaining! I had no idea the base period worked that way. So basically they're not even looking at my recent work history? That seems so weird. I'll definitely call about this ABP option. I've been trying the main EDD number but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and it hangs up on me. Is there a specific number I should call for this issue?

I had literally THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM last year!!! It's super frustrating, I know. The base period thing is stupid IMO. Like why can't they just look at your recent work history??? But yeah that's how the system works. You def need to talk to someone at EDD.

•It really is frustrating! Did you end up getting your claim approved with the Alternate Base Period? How long did it take to get resolved once you were able to talk to someone?

After trying to get through to EDD about my alternate base period for 3 weeks (and getting nowhere), I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an EDD rep in under 25 minutes. Basically they keep calling for you and then connect you when they get through. It saved me from going completely broke while waiting to get my claim fixed. Their website is claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km Once I actually got to speak with an EDD rep, they were able to switch my claim to the Alternate Base Period right away. The system is just really not designed for people who haven't been at their job for a full year+.

Let me clarify some things about the base period since there's confusion: 1. Standard Base Period = the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file 2. Alternate Base Period = the last 4 completed calendar quarters before you file Example: If you file in April-June 2025, standard base period looks at Jan-Dec 2024, completely ignoring Jan-Mar 2025 and your current quarter. ABP would look at Apr 2024-Mar 2025. Your 9 months of work history (since June 2024) would partially fall into the standard base period, but you might not have enough quarters with sufficient earnings. The ABP would capture more of your recent work. Here's what to do: 1. Call EDD and specifically request they review your claim using ABP 2. Be prepared to provide proof of employment (paystubs, W-2) 3. Explain that you've only worked 9 months but had steady employment during that time You absolutely have options here - don't panic!

•Thank you for breaking this down! I didn't realize they divide everything into calendar quarters. So if I'm understanding right, since I started in June 2024, they'd only be counting my work from June-Dec 2024 under the standard method, but with ABP they'd count June 2024-March 2025? That makes so much more sense why I got that message now.

EDD IS THE WORST!!! This happen to me to and I couldnt get food for like a month becuz of their stupid "base period" nonsense!! Why cant they just look at your w2 or last paystubs?? the whole system is designed to deny people benefits we EARNED.

•It's frustrating, but the base period system is actually set up this way to ensure stable patterns of employment rather than just recent work. Most states use a similar system. The Alternate Base Period was specifically created to help people in situations like this. The system isn't actively trying to deny benefits - it's just bureaucratically inflexible without human intervention.

have u checked ur wages in the edd portal? click on claim history then u can see what wages they have on file. sometimes employers dont report everything right

•Good idea - I just checked and it doesn't show any wages at all for 2024 or 2025! That can't be right because I've been getting regular paychecks with taxes taken out. Do you think my employer hasn't been reporting my wages to EDD?

This is actually a common issue with newer employment. Here's what could be happening: 1. Your employer may be behind on filing their quarterly wage reports (this happens more often than people realize) 2. There could be a discrepancy between your SSN on file with your employer vs. what EDD has 3. Your employer might be reporting under a different business name than what you listed on your claim I'd suggest two paths forward: 1. Contact your former employer's HR/payroll department and confirm they've been properly reporting your wages to EDD. Ask if they can provide documentation of this reporting. 2. Simultaneously pursue the Alternate Base Period option with EDD directly. Collect all your pay stubs, W-2s, or any proof of employment and earnings - you may need these to verify your income if there's a reporting issue. Don't assume malice when bureaucratic inefficiency is more likely the cause.

•I reached out to my former HR person and they confirmed they've been reporting my wages quarterly as required. They're going to email me copies of the reports they submitted to EDD. Do you think I should wait to get these documents before I try calling EDD, or should I call now and then follow up with the documents once I have them?

You should call EDD now and get the process started. Let them know your employer is sending wage documentation. They may be able to look into why the wages aren't showing in their system while you're gathering those documents. No reason to delay the process - the sooner you get this sorted, the sooner you might receive benefits. When you do talk to them, be sure to ask about filing under the Alternate Base Period AND mention the possibility of a wage reporting issue. The rep should be able to guide you on the best approach based on what they see in their system.

•Thanks everyone for the helpful advice. I'm going to try calling EDD first thing tomorrow morning, and I'll specifically ask about the Alternate Base Period and mention the wage reporting issue. If I can't get through after several attempts, I might try that Claimyr service someone mentioned. I'll update this thread once I get some answers from EDD.
