EDD claim filed before benefit year end - still waiting for weeks to certify

I'm kinda stressing out about my new unemployment claim status. My benefit year ended 7/15/2025 and I was proactive by filing a new claim on 7/9/2025 through UI Online when I saw the option appear. I've been checking my account daily for updates, and right now it just says "check back after 7/23 for available weeks to certify." Does this message actually mean my new claim was approved? Or is this just a standard waiting period message? I can't tell if I should be relieved or worried because there's no clear status saying "approved" anywhere. Has anyone else recently refiled at the end of their benefit year and seen this same message?

Thanks for responding! So you think it means I'm actually approved? I was just worried because I didn't get any confirmation email or see the word "approved" anywhere on my account.

That message is actually a good sign. It means your new claim has been processed in the system and you've been assigned a certification date. When you filed on 7/9, the system automatically set your first certification period to end on 7/22, which is why it's telling you to check back after 7/23. If there were issues with your claim, you'd see different messaging like 'pending eligibility interview' or 'additional information needed'. You'll be able to certify for your first two weeks on 7/23, and then every two weeks after that. I wouldn't worry about not seeing the word 'approved' - EDD's system doesn't really work that way. As long as you're given certification dates, you're in good shape!

That's such a relief! I was staring at my screen looking for an approval notice or something. So basically being given a certification date IS their way of saying I'm approved? That makes me feel much better.

Are you SURE it means approved?????? I had the exact same message last year and then when I went to certify it said I had a "pending eligibility interview" and I didn't get paid for SIX WEEKS!!!! I couldn't pay rent and almost got evicted!!!!! EDD is THE WORST with communication and you can't trust any of their messages!!!!

Not trying to scare you, but @TroubledClaimant is right that sometimes these messages can be misleading. You might want to call EDD and verify your claim status directly. It's better than assuming everything is fine only to find out there's a problem later. The "check back after" message is standard, but doesn't guarantee approval.

Oh no, now I'm worried again. I really can't afford to wait 6 weeks with no income. Do you think I should try calling them? I've heard it's nearly impossible to get through though...

I had this same situation in May when my benefit year ended. The "check back after" message just means the system is processing your claim. In my case, I was able to certify on the date they specified, but then my payments went to pending for about 10 days while they verified my info. It eventually switched to paid without me having to do anything. Not everyone has to do an eligibility interview.

That's a little reassuring. So it sounds like even if everything goes smoothly, I might still see some pending payments for a bit while they verify everything? Did you do anything special with your work search requirements when you certified?

I went through this last month. The confusion comes from how EDD presents information - they don't explicitly say "approved" anywhere. Instead, being assigned a certification date (your 7/23) means your claim has been processed and entered into their system. However, this doesn't guarantee payments will process immediately after you certify. If you want peace of mind, you should call EDD to confirm everything is good with your claim. I tried for days and couldn't get through until I used Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a system that holds your place in line and calls you when an EDD rep is available. Saved me hours of redial frustration. There's a short video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km When I finally spoke with someone, they confirmed my claim was fine and explained that the "check back" message is indeed their way of saying you're in the system.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that service if I don't see any progress after the 23rd. I've heard horror stories about spending days trying to get through on the phone.

I work as a job counselor and see this situation frequently with my clients. Let me clarify what's happening: 1. When you filed on 7/9/2025, the system registered your new claim application 2. The "check back after 7/23" message is standard and indicates your claim is in the system 3. The lack of an explicit "approved" message is normal - EDD's system doesn't work that way 4. Being assigned a certification date generally means your claim was processed successfully However, there are two separate processes happening: claim approval and payment processing. Your claim can be approved but payments might still go to "pending" temporarily while they verify your certifications. After 7/23, you'll certify for your first two weeks. If your payments go to "pending" instead of "paid," then you might want to contact EDD. But right now, everything sounds normal in your situation. Be sure to carefully answer all certification questions and document your work search activities to avoid delays. The most common issues arise from certification errors or incomplete work search documentation.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! It really helps to understand the whole process better. I'll make sure to keep careful records of my job search activities for when I certify.

Based on my experience and what others have shared, here's what I think is happening: Your claim has been processed and entered into the system, which is why you're seeing the certification date. This is generally a good sign, but it doesn't guarantee you won't face any issues later. Since you filed before your benefit year ended, they've likely set up your new claim to begin immediately after your old one expires. The system is basically telling you "come back after 7/23 because that's when your first certification period for the new claim will be available." If you want absolute certainty, calling EDD is your best option, though it can be incredibly frustrating. When I had a similar situation, it took me 57 calls over 3 days before I finally got through to a representative. The peace of mind was worth it though.

57 calls? That's insane! But you're right, peace of mind might be worth the hassle. I'll try calling them tomorrow morning when they first open. Thanks for sharing your experience.

UPDATE: I just wanted to follow up and let everyone know what happened. I was able to certify on 7/23 as scheduled! The payments did go to pending for about 4 days, but then switched to paid without me having to do anything. No interview was required after all. Thanks everyone for your help and advice - it really helped calm my anxiety during the waiting period!
