EDD certification during school break - what to report for Thanksgiving week?
Hey everyone! I work as a school aide and our district closed for the entire Thanksgiving week (not just Thursday/Friday). I'm confused about how to certify for that week on my UI claim. During my eligibility interview, the EDD rep explained what to do for school breaks, but I completely blanked and can't remember the instructions! Do I report this as 'not able and available' for the whole week? Or do I still say I was looking for work? I don't want to mess up my claim or trigger an overpayment later. Anyone dealt with this before as a school employee?

•Are you sure? I'm so paranoid about doing something wrong and having to pay it all back later! Did you work in a school too?

School employees have special rules for breaks. You need to report that you were not working due to a school recess/break. You should still indicate you were able and available for work and actively looking for work (unless you weren't). The key is to properly report WHY you didn't work - use the option for 'school recess/break' when certifying. EDD knows educational institutions have scheduled breaks, and as long as you're available to accept other suitable work during that period, you can still receive benefits.

•Thank you! That makes sense. Do you know if I need to provide any additional documentation about the break? Or just select that option during normal certification?

•This happened to me during spring break! Make sure you have something that shows the official school calendar with the break dates in case they audit you later. My coworker got hit with an overpayment notice 6 months later because she couldn't prove when our exact break was. SO ANNOYING!!!

Ya im a substitute teacher and have same issue every holiday. The thing to remember is you ARE available for work during break - just not at your normal job. Keep applying to jobs that week so you have proof of work search and youll be fine.

•This is correct - school employees are in a unique situation. The critical distinction is that you must be available and looking for other suitable work during the break. Make sure you document at least 3 work search activities each week as required. If you're called for an eligibility interview later, having this documentation ready will prevent potential issues.

I was in this exact situation last year working as a classroom aid. Trying to get through to EDD to ask questions was IMPOSSIBLE. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes who explained exactly how to handle school breaks. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The rep I spoke with confirmed I needed to indicate I was on school recess but still available for other work, and should continue my work search activities during the break.

•Yeah, it saved me hours of redial frustration. The rep I got was super helpful with explaining the whole school employee situation. Much better than guessing and risking problems later.

WAIT A SECOND! Are you a SUBSTITUTE teacher or a regular employee??? The rules are COMPLETELY different depending on your employment type!!! Subs have reasonable assurance rules that are way more complicated. Regular employees just need to say they're on recess but available for work. EDD is so confusing with this stuff I swear they make it complicated on purpose!!!

•I'm a regular aide with set hours, not a sub. So it sounds like I just mark 'school recess' and indicate I'm still looking for work. Thanks for pointing out the difference!

To clarify for everyone: Educational institution employees have specific guidelines for breaks: 1. You must report the reason for not working as "school recess/break" 2. You must still be able, available, and actively seeking work during this period 3. Document all work search activities (minimum 3 per week) 4. Keep a copy of the official school calendar showing the break dates If you receive an eligibility interview request later, having this documentation ready will help resolve any questions quickly. The most common mistake is incorrectly reporting the reason for not working or failing to maintain work search requirements during breaks.

•This is super helpful! I'm going to print out our district calendar right now and save it with my UI paperwork. Thank you all for the advice!
