EDD: When can I reapply for unemployment after receiving benefits last year?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out when I can apply for unemployment again. I received benefits last year, but I know there's a waiting period before you can reapply. Does anyone know exactly how long I have to wait? Is it a full year from when I last got benefits? Any help would be appreciated!

Yeah, it's typically a one-year waiting period from the date you first filed your previous claim. So if you filed on June 1st last year, you'd be eligible to file again on June 1st this year. Hope that helps!

•Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's any way to check the exact date online? I can't remember when I filed last year 😅

•No problem! You should be able to log into your unemployment account online and check your claim history. It'll show the date you filed and when your benefits started. If you can't find it there, give the unemployment office a call and they can tell you.

Ugh, the whole system is so frustrating. Why do we even have to wait a year? What if someone loses their job again before that? It's not like we can control when we get laid off. 🙄

•I feel you. The system definitely has its flaws. I think the waiting period is to prevent people from relying on unemployment long-term, but it does leave gaps for those who genuinely need help multiple times in a year.

•Exactly! It's like they assume everyone's trying to game the system. Some of us are just trying to survive out here. 😤

Hey guys, I actually found a way to get someone on the phone about this stuff. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•I was skeptical at first too, but I gave it a shot out of desperation. It actually worked for me! Saved me hours of hold time.

•Wait, we have to PAY to talk to someone about our benefits now? That's messed up. 🤦♂️

•I get it, it's not ideal. But for me, paying $20 was worth it to finally get my issues resolved. Beats sitting on hold for hours or not getting through at all.

Pro tip: Keep a record of all your unemployment stuff. I learned the hard way. Write down dates, save emails, screenshot online stuff. Makes life way easier when you need to reapply or have questions.

Idk if this helps, but I was in the same boat last year. Called the unemployment office and they told me I could actually apply a few weeks before my year was up. They process it and then it kicks in right when you're eligible again. Might be worth a shot!

Just a heads up, the rules can vary by state. Make sure you're checking your specific state's unemployment website for the most accurate info. Some states might have different waiting periods or exceptions.

•This! 💯 I moved states last year and was shocked at how different the rules were. Definitely do your homework based on where you live.

Okay, let me break this down for everyone because there's a lot of confusion about unemployment benefit periods: 1. Benefit Year: This typically lasts 52 weeks from the date you file your claim. 2. Waiting Period: Most states have a one-week waiting period before benefits start. 3. Maximum Benefit Amount: There's a cap on how much you can receive in a benefit year. 4. Requalifying: You usually need to work and earn a certain amount before you can qualify again. 5. Extensions: Sometimes available during high unemployment periods. To reapply: - Wait until your benefit year ends (52 weeks from initial filing) - You must have worked since your last claim - You need to have earned enough in your base period to qualify Remember, rules can vary by state. Always check with your local unemployment office for specifics. And keep ALL your paperwork – paystubs, layoff notices, everything. You'll need it. Hope this helps clear things up for everyone! 🙌

•This is super helpful, thanks for laying it all out! Question: what exactly is a 'base period'? How do they calculate that?

CosmicCadet
•Great question! The base period is usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed your claim. So if you file in May 2023, they'd look at January 2022 through December 2022. They use this to determine if you've earned enough to qualify and how much your benefit will be.

Has anyone else noticed that the unemployment website is always down when you need it most? Like, do they do that on purpose or what? 🤔

•omg yes! I swear its a conspiracy to make it harder for us to claim benefits lol

•Nah, it's probably just overloaded. Remember how bad it was during the pandemic? System couldn't handle all the claims.
