Do I report jury duty income on my EDD certification? Confused about timing and payment

Been unemployed for 2 months now and just got summoned for jury duty next week. I'm totally confused about how to handle this on my EDD certification. Do I report it as work/income for the week I actually serve on the jury? Or do I wait until I receive the jury duty check (whenever that happens)? I've heard jury duty pays like $15/day in California plus mileage, but I have no clue when they actually send the payment. Will this mess up my unemployment benefits? I don't want to get hit with an overpayment notice for doing my civic duty! Anyone had experience with this situation?

You should report jury duty payment in the week you PERFORM the service, not when you actually receive the payment. This follows the same principle as regular work - you report based on when you earned it, not when you got paid. Just estimate the amount if you don't know exactly, and you can always make corrections later if needed. And yes, jury duty pay in CA is typically $15/day after the first day (first day is usually unpaid) plus mileage reimbursement.

Thank you for the quick response! That makes sense about reporting during the week I actually serve. Should I include the mileage reimbursement part as income too? Or just the daily payment amount?

I served jury duty last month and totally freaked out about this too lol. Its not that big a deal just report it when you do the work. The amount is so small it barely affected my benefits.

That's a relief to hear it didn't impact your benefits much. The whole EDD reporting system stresses me out so much - I'm always worried I'll make a mistake and lose everything!

Just to add some helpful context: Jury duty payments are considered income and must be reported when certifying for EDD benefits. However, you only need to report the actual payment amount ($15/day typically), NOT the mileage reimbursement portion. Mileage reimbursement is considered expense reimbursement, not income. So when certifying, only include the daily stipend amount as income for that week. Also, be aware that if you're on regular UI, EDD will reduce your weekly benefit amount by the amount you report from jury duty (after the first $25).

Thank you for clarifying about the mileage reimbursement! I wasn't sure about that part. I'll just report the $15/day then. So if I serve 3 days, that's $45 I'd report for that week, right?

UGH the system is so confusing!!!! I got summoned for jury duty earlier this year and didn't report the payment because I thought since it wasn't technically WORK it didn't count as income. BIG MISTAKE!!! EDD flagged my account during some random review and now I'm dealing with an overpayment notice for like $100. SO STUPID when I was just trying to do my civic duty!!!

That's unfortunate but it highlights why accurate reporting is important. Any income, including jury duty pay, needs to be reported. For anyone reading this thread - always report ALL income, even small amounts, to avoid potential overpayment issues later.

When I had jury duty last year, I tried calling EDD to ask this exact question but couldn't get through. Spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The EDD rep confirmed what others are saying - report jury duty payment during the week you serve, not when you get paid. And yes, only the daily jury pay counts as income, not the mileage.

Yes, it definitely worked for me. I was also skeptical at first but was desperate after trying for days. Got connected to an actual EDD representative quickly - totally worth it when you need answers right away. They just help you bypass the phone queue somehow.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that service if I have any more questions after actually doing jury duty. So far everyone's answers here have been super helpful though!

i think you only gotta report if you actually get SELECTED for jury duty not just if you show up for the selection process but anyway its barely any money so dont stress about it too much

This isn't accurate. You need to report ANY jury duty pay received, even if it's just for appearing for selection. Most counties pay for each day you appear, whether you're selected for a jury or not. Report all income to avoid potential overpayment issues later.

To summarize the correct information for anyone else who finds this thread: 1) Report jury duty pay during the week you perform the service 2) Only the daily stipend ($15/day typically) counts as income - NOT mileage reimbursement 3) The amount will reduce your weekly benefit by whatever you earn over $25 4) Report it even if you're just there for selection and don't get picked 5) Keep documentation of your jury service dates in case EDD asks for verification later

Thank you for this clear summary! I feel much better about handling this now. I'll make sure to report accurately when I certify for that week. Really appreciate everyone's help!

One thing I wanted to add that hasn't been mentioned yet - if you end up serving on a longer trial (like a week or more), some courts pay a higher daily rate after the first few days. For example, in some CA counties it goes up to $40/day after day 10. Just make sure to report whatever amount you actually receive each day. Also, if your jury service gets you dismissed early in the day, you're still entitled to the full daily payment, so report the full amount even if you only served a few hours that day.

That's really good to know about the higher rates for longer trials! I'm hoping my jury duty will just be a day or two, but it's helpful to understand how the payment structure works for extended service. Do you know if there's anywhere online where I can look up the specific payment rates for my county? I'm in Orange County and want to make sure I report the correct amounts.
