EDD jury duty reporting - report when served or when paid?
I just got summoned for jury duty starting next month and I'm worried about how to handle this on my UI certification. When answering the question "Did you receive any other type of income such as the following?" (where jury duty is listed), should I report this during the week I'm actually serving on jury duty OR wait until I physically receive the payment check from the court? I'm confused because earlier in the certification process there's a question that specifically says "even if you haven't yet been paid" but this jury duty question doesn't have that note. Does that mean I only report it once I get the actual check in hand? My jury duty is scheduled for 2 weeks and I really don't want to mess up my benefits by reporting incorrectly. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm in Los Angeles County if that matters.

You should report jury duty income for the week you RECEIVE the payment, not when you perform the service. This is different from wages/work which you report when earned even if not paid yet. Since jury duty is considered "other income" and not wages, you only need to report it when you get the check in hand. Make sure you keep your jury duty summons and payment stub as documentation in case EDD ever questions it. Also, be aware that if your jury duty lasts more than a day or two, you'll need to answer "no" to the question about being able and available for work during that period.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So even though I'll be serving for 2 weeks, I don't mark anything about the jury duty until I get the payment? And I should still mark that I'm available for work during those weeks? I thought serving on jury duty might be considered a good reason for not being available...

•You're lucky EDD didn't catch that! Even small amounts need to be reported. I know someone who got hit with an overpayment notice for not reporting $75 in side income. The system is so inconsistent though - some people get away with it and others get flagged for tiny mistakes.

This is actually a bit complex, so let me break it down: 1. For the "other income" question - report jury duty pay when you RECEIVE the check, not when you perform the service 2. For the "able and available for work" question - this is where it gets tricky. Technically, while serving jury duty, you are NOT available for work. However, EDD typically recognizes jury duty as a valid reason and doesn't penalize you for it. What you should do: - Answer "No" to being available for work during weeks you serve - In the explanation box, clearly state you were serving jury duty (mandatory civic duty) - When you eventually receive the payment, report it as "other income" for THAT certification week - Keep ALL documentation (summons, attendance verification, payment stub) This approach ensures you're being fully transparent with EDD and follows their guidelines correctly.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't realize I should answer "No" to being available. I was worried that would automatically disqualify me for benefits that week. Will I need to do anything special to prove I was on jury duty, or just keep the documentation in case they ask?

THE EDD SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I reported jury duty EXACTLY as instructed and my claim was put on pending for 6 WEEKS while they "investigated"!!! Had to call 47 TIMES before getting through to a rep who fixed it in 2 minutes. They said their system automatically flags ANY changes to your normal certification pattern. My advice - use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an EDD rep BEFORE you certify with jury duty info. The service helped me get through when regular calling was impossible. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km ASK THE REP to put notes on your account BEFORE you certify with the jury duty info so it doesn't get stuck in pending!!!!

•100% LEGIT. I was skeptical too but when you've called EDD 47 times and keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message, you get desperate. It worked exactly as advertised - had me on the phone with a real EDD rep in under 15 minutes when I had been trying for DAYS on my own.

I had jury duty last month. Completely different experience than what others are saying. I marked "yes" for other income during the week I served (even though I hadn't been paid yet) and then listed the amount they told me I would get. My certification went through fine, no issues at all. Maybe it varies by county?

•It shouldn't vary by county since EDD is state-level, but the system is notoriously inconsistent. The official guideline is to report jury duty pay when received, not when served. You got lucky that reporting it early didn't cause problems, but it's not technically the correct approach according to EDD rules.

Just wondering... does anyone know if the jury duty check affects your weekly benefit amount much? I have a summons coming up in June and trying to budget.

•For each dollar you report in jury duty pay, your weekly benefit amount is reduced by the same amount. So if you receive $15/day for 5 days ($75 total) and your weekly benefit amount is $450, you'll receive $375 for that week ($450-$75). Just remember that jury duty pay is typically very low - most counties in California pay between $15-30 per day, and often nothing for the first day.

Thank you all for the helpful information! To make sure I understand correctly: 1. Mark "No" for being available for work during jury duty weeks 2. Explain it's for jury duty in the additional information box 3. Only report the jury duty pay as "other income" during the week I actually receive the check 4. Keep all documentation in case of questions I'll also try contacting EDD before my jury duty starts to get notes added to my account. I really appreciate everyone's help!

•You've got it exactly right! One additional tip: after you certify for the weeks with jury duty, log into your UI Online account daily to check your payment status. If it gets stuck on "pending" for more than 3-4 days, that's when you should call EDD to have them push it through manually.

I went through this exact situation about 6 months ago and want to share what worked for me. I was selected for a 3-week trial in Orange County. Here's what I did based on advice from an EDD rep I spoke with beforehand: - Weeks 1-3 (serving): Answered "No" to available for work, wrote "Serving mandatory jury duty" in the explanation box - Week 4 (when I got the check): Reported the jury duty payment as "other income" The key thing that saved me headaches was calling EDD BEFORE my service started. I used the technical issues line (1-800-300-5616) early in the morning and got through after about 45 minutes. The rep added notes to my account explaining the jury duty situation, which prevented my claim from getting flagged. Total jury pay was $195 for 3 weeks ($15/day after the first unpaid day), so it barely affected my benefits anyway. The whole process went smoothly because I was proactive about calling ahead. My advice: Don't wait until you're certifying to deal with this. Call now and get those protective notes added to your account!

•Thank you so much for sharing your detailed experience! This is exactly the kind of real-world advice I was hoping to get. I'm definitely going to try calling that technical issues line you mentioned - I hadn't heard of using that number to get through faster. Did you call right when they opened at 8am or was there a better time? Also, when you got the rep to add notes to your account, did they give you any kind of confirmation number or way to verify the notes were actually added?
