How to properly report jury duty when certifying for EDD benefits?
So I just received a jury duty summons for next month, and I'm currently on unemployment. I have no idea how to handle this with EDD. Do I need to report jury duty when certifying? Will I still get my benefits that week? The summons says I'll get $15/day which seems way less than my weekly benefit amount. Anyone dealt with this before? I don't want to accidentally commit fraud, but I also can't live on jury duty pay alone!

You absolutely need to report jury duty on your certification. When you certify, you'll answer the question about whether you were 'able and available for work' - if you were at jury duty, you need to say NO for those days. However, you'll still get partial benefits for the days you were available for work that week. Jury duty counts as a valid reason for not being available, so it won't disqualify you completely.

•Thanks! So if jury duty is only 2 days that week, I'd say NO for those 2 days but YES for the other 5 days? And then I report the $30 jury pay as income? I'm just nervous about doing something wrong.

•You DO need to report the jury duty pay as income. Even though it's small, not reporting it would technically be fraud. Better safe than sorry with EDD - they do cross-check with other government systems.

THE EDD SYSTEM IS RIDICULOUS!!! I reported jury duty honestly last winter and it caused my entire claim to be flagged for review!!!! Took SEVEN WEEKS to get my payments again because some EDD worker didn't understand that jury duty is MANDATORY and not the same as just deciding not to work!!!! And then they made me do an eligibility interview just to explain jury duty!!! ABSURD!!!!

•That sounds frustrating, but I think your experience isn't typical. I had jury duty for a week last October while on unemployment, reported it properly, and had no issues at all. The system worked exactly as intended for me.

If you're having trouble getting clear answers from EDD about the jury duty reporting, I recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent quickly. I was stuck in a similar situation and spent days trying to reach someone. With Claimyr.com I got through in about 20 minutes and got everything sorted out. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km - totally worth it for peace of mind on confusing situations like this!

•Thanks for sharing this. I've been calling and can't get through at all. I'll check this out if I can't figure it out from the advice here.

Here's the exact procedure for reporting jury duty on your EDD certification: 1. When certifying, mark that you were NOT able and available for work on the days you actually served jury duty 2. Report any jury duty pay as income for that week 3. For the question asking why you weren't available, indicate it was due to jury duty (mandatory civic duty) 4. Keep documentation of your jury service dates in case EDD requests verification Jury duty is considered a good cause for not being available for work and won't affect your eligibility. You'll receive partial benefits for that week based on the days you were available and after deducting any jury pay.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I'll follow these steps exactly when I certify. Good tip about keeping the documentation too - I'll make sure to get something from the court showing my attendance dates.

When I had jury service they kept us waiting around for hours before dismissing us. I still claimed the full day as jury duty since I couldn't work that day. Just fyi.

•That's correct. If you were required to be at the courthouse - even if you were ultimately dismissed without serving on a jury - you should still report that full day as jury duty since you weren't available for work during that time.

I wonder if there's a difference between being summoned vs actually being selected for a trial? I got a summons but wasn't picked for the actual jury. Still had to report it to EDD though.

•For EDD purposes, it doesn't matter whether you were selected for a jury or just had to show up for jury selection. Any day you were required to be at the courthouse for jury service (selection or actual service) counts as a day you were not available for work, and should be reported as such when certifying.

Update: I called EDD using that Claimyr service and got through to someone who explained everything. For anyone else who needs to know: You mark "No" for the days you're at jury duty when they ask if you were able and available for work. Then report the jury pay as income. They said as long as you're honest about it, there's no issue with your claim. Thanks everyone for the help!

•Thanks for reporting back! That's exactly the correct procedure. Glad you got it confirmed directly from EDD.

Just wanted to add that if you're on a longer jury trial (like 2+ weeks), you might want to contact EDD directly to discuss your situation. I served on a 3-week trial last year and they were actually pretty accommodating - they adjusted my certification schedule so I didn't have to worry about missing deadlines while in trial. The key is being proactive and transparent with them about your jury service dates.

•That's really good to know about longer trials! I was wondering what would happen if I ended up on something that lasted weeks. Did you have to provide any special documentation from the court to EDD about the extended jury service? And did they pause your job search requirements during that time too?
