Do 2021 stimulus checks show up on W2s? Trying to get IRS documentation
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out if I got a W2 for the 2021 stimulus check. I called the IRS to get copies of my 2021 and 2022 W2s, but now I'm not sure if that's even the right thing to look for. Does anyone know if stimulus checks are reported on W2s or if there's a different form I should be asking about?

Stimulus checks aren't reported on W2s. They were economic impact payments and don't count as taxable income. You won't find them on your W2.

Yep, can confirm. I work in tax prep and we had to explain this to sooo many clients last year.

If you're looking for proof of your stimulus payment, you should check your bank statements from 2021. The deposit should show up there.

Good idea! You can also create an account on the IRS website to view your tax records. They might have a record of the payment there.

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DDIs54YyKAw

Here's a comprehensive guide on stimulus checks and tax implications: ā¢ Stimulus checks (Economic Impact Payments) are not taxable income ā¢ They don't appear on W2 forms ā¢ You don't need to report them on your tax return ā¢ If you didn't receive a check you were eligible for, you can claim it as a Recovery Rebate Credit ā¢ The IRS should have sent Notice 1444 (for 2020) or 1444-B (for 2021) showing the amount you received ā¢ You can also check your IRS account online for records ā¢ If you still need help, consider contacting a tax professional or the Taxpayer Advocate Service Hope this helps clear things up for everyone! Let me know if you have any questions.

Quick question - what if I never got my Notice 1444? Can I still claim the Recovery Rebate Credit?

Yes, you can still claim it! Just be sure to report the correct amount on your tax return. If you're unsure, check your IRS online account or bank statements.

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that we have to jump through so many hoops just to understand our own tax situation? š¤¦āāļø

For real. In some countries, the government just sends you a completed tax form and you just verify it. Why can't we have that?

Pro tip: If you need tax documents from previous years, you can request a wage and income transcript from the IRS website for free. It shows all reported income, including W2s.
