Need to get my 2022 W2 info to file my taxes from that year. Help!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a panic here. I recently realized I never filed my 2022 taxes and now I'm trying to get caught up before I get in trouble with the IRS. The main problem is I can't find my 2022 W2 anywhere! I've turned my apartment upside down looking for it. I worked at two different places during 2022 - a restaurant for the first half of the year (made about $21,000 there) and then a retail store where I finished out the year (made around $18,500). I've already contacted the retail place but they said their HR department would need 7-10 business days to process my request for a copy. I'm really worried about potential penalties since I'm filing so late. Does anyone know the fastest way to get my 2022 W2 info? Can I get it directly from the IRS somehow? Is there an online system where this information is stored? Any advice would be super appreciated!

You have a few options to get your 2022 W2 information. The fastest way is to request a Wage and Income Transcript directly from the IRS, which will show all information reported to them including your W2 data from both employers. You can request this online through the IRS website by creating an account at IRS.gov and using their "Get Transcript" service. Alternatively, you can call the IRS at 800-908-9946 to request your transcript, or complete and submit Form 4506-T. Just be aware that if you request it by mail, it could take 5-10 business days to receive it. As for penalties, you'll likely face a failure-to-file penalty which is usually 5% of unpaid taxes for each month your return is late (up to 25%). If you're owed a refund, there's generally no penalty for filing late, but you only have three years from the original due date to claim it.

•Thank you so much for the detailed response! I had no idea about the Wage and Income Transcript. Will that have all the exact same information that would be on my original W2s? I need the detailed breakdown of federal, state, and local taxes that were withheld to make sure I'm filing correctly. Also, do you happen to know if I need to file any special forms since I'm filing so late? Or do I just file the regular 1040 for 2022?

•The Wage and Income Transcript will show most of the information that appears on your W2s, including wages paid and federal tax withholding. However, it may not show state and local tax information as those aren't reported directly to the IRS. For complete state and local tax withholding details, you might still need to contact your former employers. For late filing, you'll use the same 1040 form for tax year 2022 (not the current year's form). No special forms are needed just because you're filing late, but if you owe taxes, the IRS will automatically calculate penalties and interest and send you a bill after processing your return.

After spending weeks trying to track down old W2s from companies that were giving me the runaround, I finally found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it saved me so much stress. I uploaded some old pay stubs and bank statements, and their system was able to help me piece together my income info for the missing periods. Even better, they helped me understand which deductions I was eligible for based on my employment history. The transcript option mentioned above is definitely good, but I found this service much faster than waiting on the IRS, especially when I needed to file quickly to avoid more penalties. Wish I'd known about it sooner!

•How accurate is the information they put together? I'm in a similar situation but I'm nervous about filing with anything less than the official W2 numbers. Don't want to make my situation worse by submitting incorrect info.

•Does this actually work for getting official W2 info though? I thought only employers or the IRS could provide the legitimate tax documents? Wouldn't using estimates just cause problems later?

•The accuracy is actually quite good because they don't just estimate - they use the information from your pay stubs and other documents to reconstruct what would be on your W2. In my case, the numbers matched perfectly when I eventually got one of my official W2s to compare. They don't provide official tax documents to replace your W2s. What they do is help you accurately determine what should be reported based on your available records. The IRS allows you to file with reconstructed information if you can't get your original documents, as long as you make a good faith effort to be accurate. The service helped me organize everything properly and understand exactly what to report.

Just wanted to update everyone - I took the advice about taxr.ai and it was seriously helpful. I had a similar situation with missing 2022 W2s and was stressing about penalties. I uploaded my last pay stubs from each job and some bank statements, and they helped me reconstruct all the information I needed. The best part was they showed me some deductions I had no idea I qualified for! I was actually owed a refund instead of owing more money like I feared. Filed last week and already got confirmation that my return was accepted. Such a relief to have this dealt with finally!

If you've tried getting your W2 from your employers and the IRS transcript isn't coming through fast enough, you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in the same boat last year and spent HOURS on hold with the IRS trying to get someone to help me. Claimyr got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 15 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I was waiting before. They have a pretty cool demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The agent was able to verify my identity and give me all the W2 information I needed over the phone. Saved me days of waiting for employers or mailed transcripts.

•Wait, how does this even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously terrible - are you saying this service somehow gets you through the phone queue faster? That seems too good to be true honestly.

•I've heard of services like this before and they sound like scams. The IRS doesn't give priority to certain callers, so how could they possibly get you through faster? Sounds like you're just paying for something you could do yourself by calling early in the morning.

•It's not about priority or special access. What Claimyr does is automate the calling process - they have technology that navigates the IRS phone menu system and waits on hold for you. When they finally reach a human agent, you get a call connecting you directly. They're basically handling the frustrating hold music and menu navigation part so you don't have to sit there for hours. The IRS treats your call exactly the same as if you called directly - you just don't have to waste your day listening to hold music. And yes, calling early can help, but even then you can still end up waiting for 45+ minutes during tax season.

I need to eat my words from my previous comment. After a week of getting nowhere with my former employer about my missing W2, I was desperate enough to try Claimyr. I was extremely skeptical but figured it was worth a shot since nothing else was working. To my complete surprise, I got a call back in about 25 minutes connecting me to an actual IRS representative. They verified my identity and were able to give me all the information from my 2022 W2s right over the phone. I took notes and used that to file my taxes the same day. I honestly couldn't believe it worked so well. Saved me from potentially waiting weeks for document copies and helped me avoid additional penalties. Sometimes being wrong feels pretty good!

Have you checked if your tax preparer from 2022 still has your W2 info? I realized last year that H&R Block had kept all my tax documents from previous years in their system. Might be worth a call if you used a service to file in previous years.

•I actually did my own taxes using TurboTax for 2021, but I never got around to doing 2022 - that's the whole problem. I just checked and don't see any stored W2 info in my TurboTax account since I never completed filing for that year. Good suggestion though!

Just want to add, if you do get the Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS, be aware that it won't show your state tax withholding! I made this mistake last year and had to go back and amend my state return. Make sure you still try to get the actual W2 copies from your employers for complete state tax information.

•This is so important! I got hit with state penalties because I filed using only the IRS transcript info and underreported my state withholding. Ended up having to prove my actual withholding amounts later with paystubs. Huge headache.

One more option - check your email! I thought I lost my W2s from 2022 but then remembered my company had sent them electronically. Found them buried in my email from January/February 2023. Worth searching your inbox for "W2" or "tax document" just in case!
