Can you apply for disability and unemployment at the same time through California EDD?
So I got laid off from my warehouse job about 6 weeks ago and filed for regular UI right away. Here's the thing though - about two weeks into my claim I started having some pretty serious back issues that my doctor says will keep me out of work for at least 8-10 weeks. Now I'm totally confused about what I'm supposed to do with my California EDD claim. Someone at my doctor's office mentioned I should look into State Disability Insurance (SDI) but I'm already getting unemployment. Can you actually apply for disability and unemployment at the same time? Like are you allowed to collect both? I don't want to mess up my existing UI claim or get hit with an overpayment later. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

This is actually a really common situation and the short answer is no, you cannot collect both SDI and regular UI at the same time from California EDD. They're considered overlapping benefits. If you're unable to work due to a medical condition, you're technically not 'able and available' for work anymore, which is a basic requirement for unemployment. So you'd need to stop certifying for UI and switch over to an SDI claim instead.

AuthorWait so I have to completely stop my UI claim? Do I just stop certifying or do I have to officially close it somehow?

You'd essentially pause your UI by stopping certifications. Your claim stays open but inactive. Once your disability period ends and you're cleared to work again, you can resume certifying for UI if you still have a remaining balance.

went thru this exact thing last year. hurt my shoulder two months into collecting unemployment. what california edd told me was that the day your disability starts is the day you stop being eligible for UI. so if you already certified for weeks you weren't actually disabled thats fine but going forward you gotta switch. the SDI weekly benefit is calculated differently than UI so your payment amount might change

AuthorDid you lose a lot of money switching over? I'm kind of worried the SDI amount will be way lower than what I'm getting now.

mine was actually pretty close tbh. SDI is based on your highest earning quarter in a base period so if you were making decent wages it should be comparable. but yeah everyones different

I was in almost this exact situation and what really helped me was actually getting through to a California EDD rep on the phone to explain my circumstances. They can note your account, help you figure out the exact transition date, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks. Problem is actually reaching someone - I must have called 40+ times before I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that basically gets you connected to a live California EDD agent without spending hours redialing. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly saved me so much stress during an already rough time with my injury.

AuthorOh wow I didn't know that existed. I've been trying to call EDD for days and can't get through to anyone. Going to check that out right now.

seconding this, getting a human on the phone when you're trying to switch between benefit types is really important so they can document everything correctly

does that actually work? every time i try to call edd i get the 'we cannot take your call' message and it hangs up on me

I need to jump in here because there's a nuance that's important. There's actually a brief overlap period you need to be careful about. If you certify for UI for a week and then retroactively get a disability start date from your doctor that falls in that same week, California EDD can and will flag that as a potential overpayment. Your doctor's certification date on the DE 2501 form matters a LOT here. Make sure the dates are clean and don't overlap.

AuthorThis is making me nervous. My doctor wrote a note saying I should have started resting about 10 days ago but I just certified for UI last week. Does that mean I'm already in trouble?

Nick Kravitz
Not necessarily in trouble yet. Just be transparent when you file your SDI claim - there's a section where you explain the timeline. The key is don't certify for any more UI weeks that overlap with your disability start date.

yeah the date on the doctors form is literally everything in these situations. i got an overpayment notice because my dates were off by like 3 days and it was such a headache to sort out

ok wait im confused. so if youre on SDI are you also doing job search activities?? because i thought you had to do job searches for unemployment but if youre disabled you obviously cant work so how does that work
0 coins
Zoe Walker
That's exactly the point - when you're on SDI you are NOT required to do job search activities because SDI is specifically for people who CANNOT work due to illness or injury. Job search requirements only apply to regular UI where you need to be able and available for work. The two programs have completely different eligibility criteria.

Michael Green
ohhhh ok that actually makes way more sense now. so SDI is more like short term disability basically

Nick Kravitz
Exactly right. SDI through California EDD covers non-work-related illness, injury, or pregnancy. You file the DE 2501, your doctor fills out their portion, and as long as you meet the wage requirements from your base period you should be eligible.

The EDD system is SO broken that they even make it confusing when you have a legitimate medical situation. Like why isn't there just one combined form you fill out that routes you to the right program automatically?? I've had to deal with this twice now and both times it was an absolute nightmare. First time they lost my DE 2501. Second time they approved me but deposited to an old debit card. Their systems clearly don't talk to each other.

Sorry didn't mean to scare you! You'll get through it. Just document EVERYTHING. Screenshot every page, save every confirmation number, write down every date.

Here's a practical step-by-step for your situation since you're already mid-claim: 1. Stop certifying for UI effective the date your disability began per your doctor 2. Download and complete the DE 2501 form from the California EDD website - this is the Claim for Disability Insurance Benefits 3. Have your doctor complete the medical certification section promptly (they have 49 days from disability start date) 4. Submit the form - you can do this online through SDI Online on the EDD website 5. There's a 7-day non-payable waiting period for SDI before benefits kick in 6. Once you recover and are cleared to return to work, contact EDD to resume your UI claim if you have remaining weeks available

AuthorThis is incredibly helpful thank you. One question - when I resume UI after SDI ends, do I start a whole new claim or pick up where the old one left off?
0 coins
Elijah Brown
You pick up where you left off as long as your benefit year hasn't expired. The benefit year is 12 months from when you filed the original UI claim. If there's still time left in the year and you have a remaining balance, you just resume certifying. If the year expired you'd need to file a new claim.

also worth noting the 7 day waiting period for SDI is rough when you're already waiting on UI payments. make sure you have some cash cushion if possible

had to do this transition myself about 8 months ago after a car accident. few things nobody told me that i wish i knew: 1) your EDD debit card works for both UI and SDI payments so at least you dont have to set up new banking stuff 2) if your doctor says you can do modified/light duty work that complicates things because you might be partially able to work which is a whole different situation 3) if your disability lasts more than a year look into SSDI through Social Security which is federal not california edd
0 coins
Ryan Kim
AuthorOh interesting about the debit card, that's one less thing to worry about. And yeah my doctor mentioned possible light duty in a few weeks so that might complicate things...
0 coins
Victoria Jones
Light duty situation is genuinely complicated. Basically if you can do some work but not your normal job California EDD SDI might pay partial benefits. Definitely worth getting an actual human on the phone at EDD to walk through it because the rules are specific.

Natalie Chen
Yeah for anything involving partial disability or light duty clearance you really do need to speak with an EDD rep directly. That's where Claimyr (claimyr.com) came through for me again - getting a real person on the phone who can look at your specific claim details makes a huge difference when your situation doesn't fit neatly into one box.

just here to say I was in this situation and it took me THREE MONTHS to get it sorted out because I made the mistake of certifying for UI for two weeks after my injury started. EDD flagged it and I had an overpayment investigation running simultaneously with my SDI application and it was genuinely one of the most stressful things I've ever dealt with. please please please get your dates straight before you do anything else
0 coins
Ryan Kim
AuthorOh no that sounds terrible. I'm going to be extra careful about the dates. Did everything eventually get resolved?
0 coins
Cameron Black
yes it did but it took forever and I had to write a bunch of explanation letters. in the end they waived the UI overpayment because I showed I was acting in good faith and had medical documentation. still wouldn't wish it on anyone

Nick Kravitz
This is such an important cautionary tale. The overpayment investigation and SDI claim running at the same time creates real delays in both. A 15 minute phone call with EDD to get the dates sorted at the beginning saves months of headaches.

does the SDI pay the same amount as unemployment or more or less? I'm kind of in a similar boat and haven't pulled the trigger on filing either one yet
0 coins
Zoe Walker
They're calculated differently. UI is based on your earnings in a base period and typically replaces about 60-70% of your wages up to a maximum weekly benefit. SDI calculates your weekly benefit at 60-70% of wages depending on income level with its own maximum. In practice they're often similar amounts but not always identical since they use slightly different base period calculations.

Jessica Nguyen
ok so I should probably just file and see what it comes out to. thanks

One important difference: SDI has a maximum benefit duration tied to your medical condition (typically up to 52 weeks), while UI maximum duration is 26 weeks under regular benefits. So for longer disabilities SDI can actually provide more total support.

I work in HR and see this come up a lot with employees. One thing to add - if your employer offers Short Term Disability through a private insurance plan, that's completely separate from California EDD's SDI program. You might actually be able to collect private STD AND California SDI if your employer offers both, but you definitely cannot double-dip on California state programs. Always check your employee benefits package too.

Ryan Kim
AuthorOh I didn't even think about this. I'll have to dig up my old benefits paperwork. I was a warehouse worker so I doubt there's private disability but worth checking I guess.

Warehouse roles sometimes have union benefits that include STD. Worth a 10 minute look through your paperwork or a call to HR if your former employer is cooperative about that kind of thing.

good point, people forget about private plans all the time and leave money on the table

ngl I thought SDI was only for pregnant people for the longest time lol. learned something today

haha same, I think they advertise the pregnancy/bonding aspect so heavily that people forget it covers regular injuries and illnesses too

California's SDI actually has three components: disability insurance for illness/injury, Paid Family Leave for bonding with a new child or caring for a sick family member, and pregnancy disability. Most people only know about one of them.

Genuine question for anyone who's done this - when you go back to UI after SDI ends, do they require you to restart your job search documentation from scratch or does it continue from before? I'm about to go through this transition and not sure if my CalJOBS registration still counts or if I need to redo it.
0 coins
Elijah Brown
Your CalJOBS registration doesn't expire so you don't need to redo it. When you resume UI certifications you'll just need to resume meeting the weekly job search requirements going forward - California EDD currently requires a minimum number of work search activities per week which you record and may be asked to verify. Your previous registration and any existing resume on CalJOBS carries over.

Hannah White
Perfect, that's what I was hoping to hear. I was worried I'd have to rebuild my whole profile on CalJOBS again.

If your benefit year is still active when you come back your claim balance just picks up where it left off. The system treats the SDI period as basically a pause.

UPDATE from OP: I ended up calling EDD finally after using Claimyr (claimyr.com) like someone mentioned above - you can see a demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - and I actually got through to a real person in about 20 minutes which felt like a miracle after days of busy signals. The rep was actually super helpful and confirmed everything people said here. I'm officially switching to SDI, they noted my account, and the rep said my UI claim will just stay dormant until I'm medically cleared to work again. Thanks everyone for your help on this thread!!

For anyone finding this thread later with the same question - the TL;DR is: applying for disability and unemployment at the same time is not allowed in California because the eligibility requirements directly contradict each other. UI requires you to be able AND available for work. SDI requires you to be UNABLE to work. You have to pick one based on your actual medical situation. If your disability is temporary, switch to SDI, let it run its course, then return to UI when you're cleared.

California EDD really should make this clearer on their website. So many people must get into trouble just because they don't know the rules.

seriously thank you for writing this out so simply. edd's own website makes it way more confusing than it needs to be

one more thing nobody mentioned - if you have dependents, SDI doesn't have a dependent allowance added to it the way some other states do. California SDI is purely wage-replacement based. just something to factor into your budgeting while you're out.

Also worth knowing - if you're struggling financially during the SDI waiting period, you can look into local emergency assistance programs. 211 California is a good starting point to find resources near you.

went through this whole process last spring and the thing that surprised me most was how fast California EDD SDI processed my claim compared to regular unemployment. my UI claim sat in adjudication for like 5 weeks but my SDI claim was approved and paid within 2 weeks of my doctor submitting the medical portion. not saying thats everyones experience but apparently when theres clear medical documentation things move faster

Ryan Kim
AuthorThat's really encouraging to hear, thank you. I've been stressed about timing since bills don't stop.

The key is really getting your doctor to submit their part quickly. Some doctors offices drag their feet on paperwork so it might be worth calling them and emphasizing the urgency.
0 coins
Elijah Brown
SDI claims with complete documentation generally do process faster than adjudicated UI claims. The medical certification either supports eligibility or it doesn't - there's less back and forth than a UI adjudication where they're contacting former employers and investigating circumstances.
