Called 56 times but EDD keeps hanging up after choosing claim option

I'm ready to cry. Two months since I lost my retail job, I finally got around to filing my unemployment claim three weeks ago. It got approved but I'm stuck in this bizarre situation where there's an 'interview needed' flag on my account but ZERO communication about when this interview is happening! My payments are all pending and rent is coming up fast. I've called the EDD number (1-800-300-5616) literally 56 times over the past week. Most times I get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and get disconnected. The few times I actually get through the prompts and select "claim questions" the call just DISCONNECTS after I make that selection! I've tried calling at 8:01am, during lunch, right before closing - nothing works. The online portal just shows "pending - interview needed" but there's no date, time, or any information. Has anyone else dealt with this? Do I just keep calling or is there another way to get this resolved? I only have about $340 left in my bank account and I'm seriously stressing.

same thing happenin to me! been calling for 2 weeks and nothing. so frustrating!!!! the whole systems broken

It's seriously messed up! How are we supposed to get help if they won't even answer? Have you found ANY tricks that work to get through?

Try calling your local Assembly member's office! I was in the same situation last year with the interview flag but no scheduled date. I called my Assembly rep and their staff contacted EDD on my behalf. Had my interview scheduled within 4 days. Google "California assembly member lookup" to find yours.

Wow, I didn't even think about that option! I'll look up my Assembly member right now. Did they need any specific info from you when you called them?

I went through this EXACT thing in January. The "interview needed" flag but no interview scheduled is usually because they're reviewing your separation from employer. Sometimes they actually need to talk to you, but other times they just clear it after they hear back from your previous employer. Mine cleared after about 4.5 weeks without an actual interview ever happening. Payments just switched from pending to paid one day.

That gives me a little hope - but 4.5 weeks is a really long time when bills are due... Did you do anything specific that might have helped push it through?

After dealing with the same issue, I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it literally saved me. It's a service that gets you through to an actual EDD rep by navigating their phone system. Costs money but was 100% worth it - got connected in under 25 minutes when I'd been trying for weeks on my own. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep told me my interview was actually scheduled for 3 weeks out, but she was able to expedite it because of my financial hardship. Don't wait like I did - the sooner you get through to someone, the faster they can help.

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. Did the rep actually have the power to move up your interview date or was that just luck?

Not luck at all - the rep definitely had the authority to expedite. But you HAVE to explain your financial hardship clearly. Tell them exactly how much money you have left, when rent is due, etc. Some reps are more helpful than others though, so if you get someone who isn't helping, politely thank them and try again later to get a different rep.

Former EDD employee here. The "interview needed" with no date usually means one of three things: 1. Your employer contested your claim (most common) 2. There was a discrepancy between info you provided and what's in their system 3. You answered a question during certification that flagged the need for an interview The interviews are scheduled based on backlog and priority. Financial hardship CAN increase your priority if you inform them. Keep all your bills and bank statements showing low funds as evidence. When calling, try this exact sequence: call at 8:01am, press 1 for English, then wait until all prompts finish, press 1, then immediately press 0 when the next prompt starts. This sometimes bypasses the broken claim questions routing.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll try that exact sequence tomorrow morning. I think it might be option #1 in my case - my manager seemed annoyed when I mentioned filing for unemployment. Would that typically cause a longer delay?

Unfortunately, yes. When employers contest, EDD has to give them time to submit their side (usually 10 business days). Then they need to schedule an interview with you to get your side. With current backlogs, this whole process can take 4-6 weeks. Keep certifying every two weeks regardless - if approved, you'll get all backpay at once.

i dont understand y EDD makes evreything so confusing!!! i had same problem last month and after like 39 calls i finally got thru. the lady told me that they EMAILED me the interview notice but it went to some weird edd inbox in the portal that nobody knows about. check ur inbox in ui online maybe its there????

Seriously?? I've checked my regular email obsessively but didn't think to look for an inbox in the portal itself. I'll check right now - thanks for the tip!

This whole EDD system is DESIGNED to be broken!!! They WANT us to give up so they don't have to pay!!! I had an "interview needed" flag for TWO MONTHS and called 100+ times. Complete garbage system run by incompetent bureaucrats. The only thing that finally worked was filing a complaint with my state senator's office. Suddenly they could magically fix everything in 48 hours after I did that. The whole system is corrupt.

preach!! 👏👏 its all about making it so hard that people just give up!

I'm definitely feeling that frustration! It's like they're counting on people not having the time or energy to keep fighting through the system. I'll try the Assembly member suggestion first, but might escalate to my senator if that doesn't work.

Sometimes the UI Online messaging system has glitches. Have you tried logging out completely, clearing your browser cache and cookies, then logging back in? Fixed a similar issue for me where I couldn't see my interview appointment.

I haven't tried that yet! Going to do that right now. At this point I'm willing to try anything. Thanks for the suggestion!
