CA EDD: Tips to reach a human at unemployment office after constant busy signals and disconnects?
I got laid off from my job last month and I need to file for unemployment. Its been a nightmare trying to get through to someone on the phone. I've been calling for hours every day and I can never get through. The lines are always busy and when I do get through, I'm on hold forever and then they hang up on me. Does anyone have any tips on how to actually talk to a human at the unemployment office? I'm getting desperate and running out of money. Help!

Have you tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through. Also, keep hitting 0 or # repeatedly - sometimes that'll get you to a human faster.

Yeah, I've tried that. I even set an alarm for 5 minutes before they open and start calling then. Still no luck. It's like everyone else is doing the same thing.

The 0 and # trick doesn't work anymore. They caught on and now it just disconnects you. Ask me how I know π

The 0 and # trick was my go-to move last year; disappointed it doesn't work anymore.

Pro tip: if you have a friend or family member who speaks another language, have them call the non-English line. Those usually have shorter wait times.

Wow, that's clever. I might ask my Spanish-speaking neighbor for help. Thanks for the tip!

Isn't that kinda unethical tho? Taking up space on a line meant for people who actually need it?

desperate times call for desperate measures. The whole system is unethical if you ask me.

While it might be unethical, it highlights the system's flaws that need fixing.

I feel your pain. It took me 3 weeks of constant calling to finally get through. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call early in the morning, like 5 minutes before they open. 2. If you don't get through, wait 15 minutes and try again. 3. Keep doing this throughout the day. 4. Use multiple phones if you can - I had my cell and landline going at the same time. 5. Be persistent and don't give up. It's frustrating, but eventually you'll get through. Also, make sure you have all your documents ready when you do get through. They'll ask for your last day of work, employer info, and reason for unemployment. Good luck!

This is solid advice. I did something similar and it worked after about a week of trying. Stay strong, OP!

I found a method that actually works to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken.

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. After weeks of trying, I was desperate enough to try anything. It's worth it if you're in a tough spot.

Itβs a shame it takes a third-party service to get basic government support but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I understand how frustrating this situation must be for you. An alternative solution you might want to consider is using services like Claimyr, which was suggested by another user. While it costs $20, Claimyr offers a calling tool that navigates the phone menu, holds the line, and connects you to a live agent. Users have reported success with this service, which can save you hours of frustration. However, it is important to weigh the cost against your current financial situation. If you opt for this, ensure you have all necessary documents ready to make the most of your call. Furthermore, reaching out to your local representative might also help, as they can sometimes expedite the process. Google your city's state representative and use the contact form on their website to explain your situation. It's also worth noting that if you have a specific question that isn't covered online, writing a detailed email or using the available contact form on the unemployment website might yield some results, albeit slowly. Finally, staying persistent with your attempts to reach the unemployment office through multiple avenues is key. Every bit of effort counts when dealing with bureaucratic processes.

Has anyone tried going to the unemployment office in person? I'm thinking of camping out overnight to be first in line when they open.

I tried that last week. They're not even letting people in due to COVID. It's all phone and online now. π‘

If only camping out worked, the pandemic really changed everything.

I heard they just hired a bunch of new people to handle calls. Maybe it'll get better soon? π€

Even if they did, it'll probably take forever to train them. Don't hold your breath.

Have you tried applying online? I know it's not the same as talking to a person, but at least you can get the process started.

Yeah, I did the online application already. But I have some questions about my specific situation that I need to talk to someone about. The website doesn't cover everything.

Online is a joke. I applied 2 months ago and still haven't heard anything back. The system is broken.

The online system should at least have a chatbot for preliminary inquiries.

Welcome to the club, buddy. We're all in the same boat here. I've been trying to get through for weeks now. It's like they're purposely making it impossible to talk to anyone. π€

Have you tried contacting your local representative? Sometimes they can help push things through faster.

I didn't even think of that. How do I find out who my local rep is?

Just google "[your city] state representative". They usually have a contact form on their website. Explain your situation and they might be able to help!

This is why we need universal basic income. The whole unemployment system is outdated and can't handle crises like this.
