I just received my notice for an eligibility interview with EDD, but they listed a completely different job than the one I'm claiming benefits for! The interview is scheduled for next Thursday (only 6 days away), and they want me to discuss a retail position I had in 2023, but my claim is based on my construction job that ended in February 2025. I don't have any of the documentation prepared for that old job since I wasn't expecting to discuss it. Shouldn't EDD reschedule me so I can properly prepare? Has anyone dealt with this before? Will they disqualify me if I explain this during the actual interview? I'm worried they'll think I'm making excuses if I show up unprepared.
I'm beyond frustrated and hoping someone can help. My husband just got denied for unemployment in California because they said he has an active claim in Arizona from when we lived there last year. The EDD rep told him he can't file in CA until after September when the AZ claim closes. Here's the thing - he was DENIED benefits in Arizona and never received a single payment from them! It seems ridiculous that a denied claim is preventing him from getting benefits in the state where we actually live now. Has anyone dealt with this interstate claim mess before? Is there any way to expedite closing the Arizona claim or get California to reconsider since he didn't actually receive any AZ benefits?
has he checked his UI Online account in both states? sometimes the systems don't communicate properly and you can see different status info depending which state's portal you log into
Just remembered something important from our experience - make sure you keep detailed records of EVERY conversation including the name and ID number of any rep you speak with in either state. When we finally got our interstate issue resolved, it was because we had documentation of every single conversation which proved the contradictory information we'd been given.
My fiancé just had his EDD appeal hearing this morning for a disqualification on his unemployment claim. The judge seemed pretty fair and listened to his side about the workplace incident. His former employer showed up with HR and claimed he violated company policy, but my fiancé explained the policy was never communicated to any employees. The whole hearing lasted about 45 minutes. Does anyone know how long it typically takes to get the decision after an appeal hearing? The judge didn't say much about timing at the end. We're really anxious because rent is due next week and we're hoping this gets resolved in his favor. His last payment was over 2 months ago when they suddenly disqualified him.
U gotta tell us what happened at the appeal!!! What was he disqualified for? Mite help us give better advice
They disqualified him for "misconduct" but it was totally unfair. He worked at a warehouse and they claimed he violated safety protocol by not securing a load properly. But they literally gave workers 30 seconds to secure each pallet and never trained anyone on the "proper" method until AFTER someone got injured (not him). His supervisor even admitted during the hearing that the time constraints made it impossible to follow the procedure they were supposedly violating. Hope the judge saw through it all.
While waiting for the decision, make sure your fiancé continues certifying for benefits every two weeks even though payments are on hold. This is absolutely critical. If he wins the appeal, he'll only receive back payments for weeks he properly certified for. Also, start documenting his work search activities if he hasn't already. The judge might have mentioned this during the hearing, but sometimes claimants miss this detail. He needs to be actively looking for work and keeping records of applications, interviews, etc., to remain eligible regardless of the appeal outcome.
Seriously frustrated here! I just certified for my weekly benefits on Sunday and still haven't received any payment. I entered all my direct deposit information correctly through UI Online last Thursday (double-checked everything), but nothing has hit my bank account. With the old BofA card system, I'd usually see the funds within 24-48 hours after certifying. Is the new Money Network bank just super slow or am I missing something? How long are people waiting for direct deposit these days? This delay is really screwing up my budget for the month...
When I first got my Money Network card in March I had all kinds of problems with my direct deposit. Turns out I had entered my account number wrong (put my routing number twice by accident lol). Double check all your bank info is correct in UI Online. Also make sure your name matches EXACTLY how it appears on your bank account.
Update: The money FINALLY hit my account this morning! So it took exactly 5 business days from certification to deposit. Seems like everyone was right about the longer timeframe with Money Network vs BofA. Guess I'll need to plan better for these delays in the future. Thanks for all the advice!
Hey everyone, I'm in a frustrating situation with EDD regarding delayed payments in the film industry. I certified for benefits 5 months ago and properly reported all expected earnings for work I'd completed. The problem is, the production company didn't actually pay me until now (after going through arbitration!). When I honestly reported to EDD that I finally received this back pay from 5 months ago, they put me on hold pending a phone interview, even though this income was already accounted for in my original certifications. Now I'm waiting for 4 weeks of payments and really stressing about bills. Does anyone in film/entertainment deal with these irregular payment situations? Does EDD understand how film industry pay works? I'm worried they'll think this is new income rather than the delayed payment I already reported months ago. Any advice on how to explain this clearly in my interview?
EDD doesnt care about are industry they just want to deny benefits lol. ive been on sets where NOBODY got paid for 3+ months and then EDD acts like we're commiting fraud when we finally get the $$$. system is rigged against gig workers
While the system definitely has issues with gig work, I've found EDD staff are generally reasonable once they understand the situation. It's more about their system not being designed for our industry's payment practices than them actively trying to deny benefits. Documentation is key.
UPDATE: Had my phone interview today! The rep was actually really understanding once I explained everything clearly. They added notes to my account about the film industry payment structure and are releasing all my held payments! Thanks everyone for the advice - especially about having all my documentation ready and asking for a permanent note in my file about irregular industry payments. Such a relief!
Great news! Glad it worked out. Did they give you any additional advice for handling similar situations in the future?

Yes, EDD does record eligibility interviews for their records. However, you shouldn't be worried about saying "the wrong thing" if you're being honest. Just answer questions truthfully about why you're no longer employed, and you'll be fine.

UPDATE: I managed to get through to EDD this morning! The representative told me they can see all my employment history in their system, and the interview will cover my most recent job separation (construction) regardless of what's listed on the notice. She said this happens often and not to worry about it. She noted in my file about the error so the interviewer will be aware. Thank you all for the advice!
