EDD phone maze driving me crazy - need to speak with a live agent but keep getting automated claim questions

I've been trying to call EDD for two days with a specific question about my claim status. Every time I call, their automated system keeps routing me through claim filing questions before I can talk to anyone! I don't need to file a new claim - I just need to speak with an actual human about my existing situation. Has anyone figured out how to bypass this automated maze? I've tried pressing 0, staying silent, saying "representative" - nothing works. I'm getting desperate because my rent is due next week and I need this resolved ASAP. Any tricks or better times to call?

They had put my claim on hold because they needed additional identity verification even though I'd already done ID.me. Turns out they never received the verification from ID.me system (tech glitch), so the rep manually noted it in my account and said my payments should process within 48 hours. Such a relief!

That's awesome that you got it resolved! The ID.me verification issues seem to be a common problem lately. I've been dealing with EDD for months and it's crazy how many technical glitches they have on their end that end up putting our claims on hold. Thanks for sharing all the phone tips in this thread - I'm bookmarking this post because I know I'll need to call them again soon. The fact that you had to jump through all these hoops just to tell them about THEIR system error is ridiculous, but at least you're getting paid now!

EDD unfroze my claim but BofA card still locked after appeal win - anyone know wait time?

So I'm stuck in this weird limbo with EDD and Bank of America. My claim was disqualified in February, but I appealed with all my documentation and actually won (shocked me too!). The appeal was approved about 10 days ago, and I've started getting payments by paper check which is fine - they've been arriving pretty quickly, usually 2-3 days after showing 'paid' in the system. The problem is that when my claim was initially disqualified, BofA froze my EDD debit card account. I still have about $1,200 sitting in there that I can't access! I submitted the request to reopen my account over two weeks ago and absolutely nothing has happened. I've been bounced back and forth between EDD and BofA like a ping pong ball. BofA told me my account would definitely be reopened by last Friday (the 15th), but here we are and still nothing. I called EDD yesterday and the rep basically just said 'wait longer' with zero timeline or explanation. If anyone's been through this card unfreezing process after winning an appeal, I'd really appreciate knowing how long it took. I need that money for rent next month and I'm starting to panic a little. Is there any specific department I should ask for when calling? Thanks in advance!

Update us when you get this resolved! I'm dealing with something similar (though my appeal is still pending) and I'm trying to prepare for what comes next. This system is so broken - why can't the left hand talk to the right hand? It's ridiculous that EDD approves your appeal but doesn't automatically notify BofA to unfreeze your account. Just another example of how they make everything as difficult as possible for people who are already struggling.

I definitely will update! And I agree completely - the lack of communication between these agencies is mind-boggling. They freeze everything immediately when there's a question, but take forever to unfreeze even after the issue is resolved. Good luck with your appeal!

I went through this exact same nightmare last fall! My BofA card was frozen for 28 days after winning my appeal. What finally worked for me was calling EDD first thing in the morning (like 8:01 AM) and asking specifically for a supervisor or tier 2 specialist. Don't let them transfer you around - be persistent about needing someone who can access the bank notification system. The key phrase I learned is to ask them to "manually push the account reinstatement notification to BofA" - apparently there's a specific system for this that regular reps can't access. Once they did that, my card was unfrozen within 3 business days. Also keep calling BofA every few days to document your attempts - they're required to keep records of your calls and it helps if you end up filing a complaint later. The whole system is designed to make you give up, but that $1,200 is YOUR money. Don't let them keep it!

Desperate to reach EDD rep after 14 call attempts - any quick methods that actually work?

I'm going INSANE trying to get through to an EDD rep! I've called the main number literally 14 times over the past 3 days at different hours (early morning, mid-day, afternoon) and either get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message or get disconnected after being on hold for 45+ minutes. My claim has been stuck in pending for almost 5 weeks now, and I'm getting desperate as rent is due next week. Does anyone have any actual working tips for getting through? Specific numbers to call? Best times? Special prompts to press? I've heard people mention the trick of pressing certain numbers in sequence but not sure if that's outdated now in 2025. I'm willing to try ANYTHING at this point because I can't keep burning through my phone battery all day with these failed attempts. Help!!!

Any luck getting through? I'm curious which method ended up working for you.

Yes! I finally got through using your suggestion of calling the 5616 number at 8:15am with that sequence of prompts. Was on hold for about 50 minutes but finally spoke to someone who was able to remove the pending status! My payment is now showing as paid and should hit my Money Network card within 24-48 hours. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions!

That's fantastic news! So glad you were able to get through and get your claim resolved. Your success story gives me hope - I've been dealing with a similar pending claim situation for 3 weeks now. I'm going to try that exact same strategy tomorrow morning (Tuesday 8:15am, 5616 number, 1-2-4 sequence). Quick question - when you spoke to the rep, were you able to get any insight into why your claim was stuck pending for so long? Just curious if there was a specific issue they had to clear or if it was just a general backlog thing. Thanks for updating us on what worked!

EDD payment delay after President's Day - anyone else not received funds yet?

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing a payment delay after certifying this week? I normally get my EDD deposit the next day after certifying (like clockwork), but it's been 2 days now and nothing has shown up in my account. I certified Sunday night as usual. My claim status shows 'paid' in the UI Online portal since yesterday morning, but no money in my Bank of America account yet. Could the President's Day holiday on Monday be causing the delay? My rent is due Friday and I'm starting to get a bit nervous... Anyone else still waiting for their payment to hit their account?

This happens every federal holiday. The payment processing system follows this schedule: 1. You certify for benefits (Sunday for most people) 2. EDD processes certification (usually Monday) 3. Payment shows as 'paid' in system (usually Tuesday) 4. Bank processes transfer (usually Wednesday) 5. Money appears in your account (Wednesday/Thursday) When a holiday falls on any of those days, everything gets pushed back. Since Monday was President's Day, the standard timeline shifted by one day. Your payment is still coming - no need to worry unless it doesn't arrive by Friday.

This is super helpful! Thank you for breaking down the normal timeline. I feel much better knowing this is just the standard holiday delay and not an issue with my specific claim.

Just got my payment 5 minutes ago! Certified Sunday, showed paid yesterday, money hit my account just now (Wells Fargo). Check yours!

Still waiting on mine with Chase Bank ๐Ÿ˜ญ hopefully tomorrow!

@Nathan Kim Chase usually takes a bit longer than other banks for EDD payments in my experience. I have Chase too and it s'typically the last bank to process these transfers. You should definitely see it by tomorrow morning though! The holiday delay affects all banks but some are just slower than others.

EDD Money Network debit card automatic replacement? Still have old BofA card

So I'm filing a new claim after not being on unemployment for over 2 years. I still have my old Bank of America EDD debit card from my previous claim, but I know EDD switched to Money Network recently. Will they automatically send me the new Money Network card when my claim is approved, or do I need to request it somewhere? I don't see any option in UI Online to select card preferences. Anyone gone through this transition recently? Just trying to avoid payment delays once my claim gets processed.

Another important thing to know - make sure you verify your identity correctly during the application process. If there are any ID verification issues with ID.me, your payments might get held up even if your claim is approved, and that will delay your card being sent. The Money Network card will only be mailed once your first payment is actually issued (not just approved).

Good point. I already completed the ID.me verification and that part went smoothly. Hoping everything else goes as planned!

One thing I'd add is to keep checking your UI Online account regularly during this process. The system will show when your first payment is "issued" vs when it's actually "paid." The Money Network card gets mailed when it shows "issued" but you can't use it until the payment actually processes, which can be another day or two. Also, download the Money Network app once you get your card - it's much easier to check your balance and transaction history than calling the automated phone line.
