Fired after medical leave - can I qualify for EDD benefits with combined work history?

So my situation is kinda messy... I had a job at a retail store that I started in February 2022, but had to stop working in October due to some pretty serious health problems (don't really wanna get into details). My manager told me I could come back in April once I was better, and I was so relieved! But when I showed up last week ready to start, he basically said they don't have a position for me anymore and let me go on the spot. I'm wondering if I qualify for unemployment now? I'm worried I haven't worked enough quarters at this job. Before and during part of this retail job, I was also working part-time at a restaurant (about 15-20 hrs/week). Can EDD combine both of these jobs to determine if I've worked enough? I'm really stressed about bills and have no idea how the base period calculation works when you have multiple jobs or medical situations like mine.

When I applied last year after being let go, my former employer tried to fight my claim saying I voluntarily quit (which wasn't true). Just be prepared that your employer might contest your claim. If they do, you'll get paperwork about an appeal hearing. DON'T PANIC if this happens! It's actually pretty common. Just make sure you attend the hearing (they're usually by phone) and bring all your documentation. The judges are generally fair if you can show medical necessity and that you were essentially laid off when trying to return.

Oh no, I hadn't even considered they might fight it! My former manager seemed apologetic when he told me they didn't have a position anymore, but who knows what he'll tell EDD. I'll definitely keep all my documentation ready just in case.

Hey Ruby! I went through something very similar about 6 months ago - medical leave followed by basically being let go when I tried to return. The whole process was way less scary than I expected. A few quick tips that really helped me: 1. Apply ASAP - don't wait! The sooner you file, the sooner your claim starts processing. 2. When you get to the part about reason for separation, be very clear that you left for medical reasons but were told you could return, then were terminated when you tried to come back. 3. Keep calling EDD if you don't hear back within 2-3 weeks. I know their phone system is awful but persistence pays off. 4. Start keeping a job search log NOW even before you get approved - it'll save you headaches later when you need to certify. Based on what you've shared about your wages, you should definitely qualify. The medical leave won't hurt you since you had good cause and documentation. You got this! ๐Ÿ’ช

Need to waive EDD appeal to get disability - what to expect?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I need to waive my appeal for unemployment so I can get disability benefits. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect when I talk to the EDD agent? Any tips on how to explain my situation clearly? I'm feeling pretty lost and could use some guidance.

lol good luck dealing with EDD. might as well try to teach a rock to swim ๐Ÿชจ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Cmon guys, I know it's frustrating but the people working there are just doing their jobs. The system sucks, not the employees.

Has anyone here successfully switched from unemployment to disability? How long did the process take? I'm worried about having a gap in benefits while everything gets sorted out.

I went through this transition about 6 months ago. The whole process took about 3-4 weeks for me, but I did have a gap of about 10 days where I wasn't receiving any benefits. My advice would be to apply for disability as soon as you waive your unemployment appeal - don't wait. Also, make sure you have some savings set aside if possible to cover that gap period. The disability office was actually more responsive than EDD in my experience.

SDI Postpartum Disability Claim Disqualified - No Explanation Given. Help!

I'm so frustrated right now. My postpartum disability claim got disqualified and I have no clue why. I filed it after having my baby, but now I'm stuck in limbo. Has anyone else dealt with this? What could be the reason for disqualification? I really need this support and don't know what to do next.

I'm in the same boat, girl. These government systems are a joke. We're just trying to take care of our babies and they make it so hard. Sending you strength! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‘ถ

Thank you! It's nice to know I'm not alone in this struggle. Wishing you luck with your claim too!

I went through something similar last year! A few things that might help: 1. Check if you filed within the right timeframe - SDI has strict deadlines after childbirth 2. Make sure your doctor's certification was complete and properly filled out 3. Verify that you had enough wages reported in your base period (they look at specific quarters) 4. Sometimes it's as simple as a missing signature or date on the forms Also, try calling first thing in the morning (8 AM sharp) - I had better luck getting through then. The SDI number is different from regular unemployment, so make sure you're calling 1-800-480-3287 specifically for disability claims. Don't give up! The system is frustrating but you deserve those benefits, especially as a new mom. Keep us posted on how it goes!

EDD says I didn't earn enough for UI despite 4 years as school bus driver - seasonal layoff issue

I'm so frustrated right now. I've been driving a school bus for the past 4 years, and every summer when school lets out, I'm temporarily laid off. This has never been an issue before with unemployment, but this year when I tried to file my claim for summer break, my UI Online account is saying I 'didn't make enough in my base period' to qualify! How is this possible? I've been steadily employed with the same school district transportation department for 4 YEARS! My wages have actually increased since last summer when I had no problem collecting. The message says I need to contact EDD to appeal this determination, but I've been calling for 3 days straight and can't get through. Has anyone else experienced this? Could there be some kind of error with my wage reporting from the district? I need this income to cover my bills until school starts back up in September!

@profile3 I actually used Claimyr like you suggested! It worked exactly as advertised - I was connected to an EDD rep in about 15 minutes. Completely worth it after days of frustration trying to get through on my own. Now I'm just waiting for my eligibility interview which is scheduled for next week. Fingers crossed!

I'm so glad you got through and found out what was going on! This is exactly why I joined this community - to learn from others' experiences with EDD issues. I'm a substitute teacher and have been worried about potential problems with my summer claim since I also had some unpaid time off during my base period. Your situation gives me hope that even when there are multiple issues, they can be resolved if you get the right person on the phone. Please keep us updated on how your eligibility interview goes - I'm sure others in similar situations would benefit from knowing the outcome. Good luck!

Actress friend with two kids needs to apply for EDD after strike - which 2022 quarters qualify now?

My friend is an actress who hasn't worked in several months because of the industry strike. She's a single mom with two kids and finally decided to apply for unemployment benefits. I offered to help her with the application process since she's overwhelmed with childcare and everything. I'm confused about which quarters from 2022 would count toward her base period for a claim filed now in 2025. Does EDD still use the last 4 completed quarters before application, or is there a lag? Also, would any residual payments she received during the strike period count against her? She had some commercials still running but wasn't actively working. Any guidance would be really appreciated!

btw ur friend might qualfy for the altenative base period if the regular 1 doesnt work out!!! they look at diferent quarters

That's partially correct. The Alternative Base Period (ABP) uses the most recently completed four quarters instead of the standard base period. However, it's only considered if the claimant doesn't qualify under the standard base period. The system automatically checks eligibility under both methods, so your friend doesn't need to specifically request ABP - EDD will use it if it benefits her claim.

As someone who went through the EDD process recently, I'd highly recommend your friend apply online through UI Online rather than trying to call. The online system walks you through each step and lets you save your progress. Also, make sure she has her Social Security card, driver's license, and any tax documents (W-2s, 1099s) from 2022 ready before starting. The system will ask for employer information going back to her base period, so having those documents handy will make the process much smoother. One thing that helped me was writing down all my employers and approximate dates before I started the application - it made filling out that section much faster.
