EDD name change before pregnancy disability claim - help!

Hey everyone, I'm pregnant and planning to go on disability soon. The thing is, my last name has changed since I last dealt with EDD. What do I need to do to update my info and apply for disability? Any advice on handling this situation would be super helpful!

Hey OP, don't forget to check if your employer offers any additional maternity benefits. Some companies have their own disability insurance that might be easier to deal with than EDD.

Been through this exact situation! A few additional tips that helped me: 1. If you have your marriage certificate or legal name change docs ready, you can sometimes upload them directly through the EDD portal which might be faster than mailing. 2. Consider calling EDD to confirm they received your documents before submitting your disability claim - saves you from potential delays later. 3. Keep your old name handy when you call/apply initially, since their system might still show your previous name until it's fully updated. Also, start gathering your medical documentation for the disability claim while you're waiting for the name change to process. That way you're ready to go once everything's updated! Good luck with everything! 馃崁

EDD combined wage claim issue - can't file new claim in Hawaii after exhausting California benefits

I'm in a really confusing situation with my unemployment benefits and not sure what to do next. I filed an initial UI claim with California EDD in October 2022 that combined my wages from both California and Hawaii. I qualified for 16 weeks of benefits that ran out around January 3, 2023. I've been trying to find steady work since then but haven't had much luck, so I called Hawaii Unemployment to see if I could file a new claim there since I also worked in that state. The Hawaii rep told me I can't file with them because they already transferred all my Hawaii wages to California for my combined wage claim back in October. Does anyone know what my options are now? Can I file a new claim in California even though my benefit year isn't over? Do I have to wait until October 2023 to file again anywhere? I'm getting desperate as my savings are almost gone.

The combined wage claim system is SO confusing. I had a similar issue last year but with California and Oregon. What I learned is that you should always file in the state with your highest wages first if you think you might need to file again later. Once they transfer the wages between states, you can't un-transfer them. The EDD should really explain this better before people file combined wage claims!

right?? the whole system is set up to confuse people i swear

I'm dealing with something similar and wanted to share what I learned from my experience. When you file a combined wage claim, those wages essentially get "locked" into that claim and can't be used again in either state. It's frustrating because they don't make this clear upfront. One thing that might help - if you do manage to get through to EDD, ask specifically about whether you have any remaining balance on your current claim. Sometimes there can be small amounts left that people don't realize. Also, double-check that you've been certifying properly if you haven't already stopped. For finding work to qualify for a new claim, consider temporary staffing agencies or seasonal work. Even if it's not ideal, getting those wages on record now could make the difference when your benefit year ends in October. The job market is tough but having that cushion later might be worth taking whatever you can find now. Hang in there - this whole system is needlessly complicated but you'll get through it!

EDD qualification concerns after multiple job losses - will this affect my claim?

I'm in a tough situation and worried about my EDD eligibility. I've been let go from two jobs in the past year, and just started a new position yesterday. The problem is, I'm already getting weird vibes from my manager and I'm afraid this one might not work out either. If I end up getting terminated again, will EDD consider me ineligible for benefits because of this pattern? My previous employers never gave clear reasons for letting me go - they just said it "wasn't working out" and "wasn't a good fit." I always showed up on time and completed my assigned tasks, but something wasn't clicking. No formal warnings or write-ups. I'm worried that if I lose this job too, EDD will think I'm being fired for misconduct even though I'm genuinely trying my best. Would multiple job losses in a short period automatically disqualify me from unemployment benefits? Has anyone dealt with similar situations when filing claims?

If you do end up needing to file a claim after another separation, make sure you're extremely precise when answering the question about why you're no longer working. The exact wording matters significantly for how your claim is processed. If you select "fired" or "discharged," EDD automatically flags your claim for an eligibility interview. Instead, if the employer told you it "wasn't a good fit" without citing specific policy violations, the most accurate selection would be "laid off/no work available" - because essentially they're saying your specific position is no longer available to you, not that you committed misconduct. Also, start keeping a work journal now. Document all interactions, feedback (positive and negative), and any strange vibes you're getting. This documentation can be invaluable if you need to explain your side during an eligibility interview.

I never thought about the specific wording being so important when filing the initial claim. This is really valuable advice - thank you! I'll definitely start keeping detailed notes about my work interactions starting today.

I went through something similar about 2 years ago - had 3 different jobs in 8 months and was terrified EDD would deny my claim. What really helped me was understanding that EDD's main concern is whether YOU did something wrong, not whether you've had bad luck with employers. Here's what I learned from my experience: - Keep all your termination paperwork, even if it just says "not working out" - If possible, get your separation reason in writing via email - During any eligibility interview, focus on what you DID do right (showed up on time, completed tasks, followed policies) - Don't overthink the "pattern" - each job separation is evaluated separately My eligibility interview was actually pretty straightforward. The EDD rep asked basic questions like "What did your employer tell you about why you were being let go?" and "Were there any warnings or disciplinary actions?" Since I could honestly say no misconduct was involved, I got approved. The worst part was the waiting and uncertainty, but the actual process wasn't as scary as I'd built it up to be. Hang in there and try not to stress too much about something that might not even happen!

EDD website won't load for certification - stuck spinning for hours

Is anyone else having serious problems with the EDD website today? I've been trying to certify for my benefits since 8AM this morning and the page just keeps spinning and timing out. I've tried 3 different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and even Edge) and nothing works! It gets to the certification page and then just spins endlessly until I get a timeout error. My benefits will be delayed if I can't certify today and I REALLY can't afford that right now. My rent is due next week. Anyone else experiencing this or know if the system is down? Any tricks to get through? I'm seriously stressing out right now.

UPDATE: I finally got through! I took everyone's advice and tried at 1am using my phone data instead of WiFi, and it worked! The page loaded right away with no spinning circle. Just certified for both weeks. Thank you all for your help and suggestions!!

Great news! Glad it worked out. Now you know for next time - avoid Sundays for certification if possible!

Congrats on getting through Andre! This is such a common problem that I've started keeping a list of backup times when the system usually works. For anyone else still struggling, I've found these times are usually reliable: weekday mornings 5-7am, Tuesday/Wednesday evenings after 11pm, and surprisingly Thursday afternoons around 2-4pm seem to work well too. The key is avoiding those peak Sunday rush hours when literally everyone is trying to certify at once. Also pro tip - if you're still having issues, try using a different device entirely (tablet, different phone, etc) sometimes that helps break through whatever cache/cookie issues might be happening.

EDD scheduled eligibility interview over unreported $10 training pay - should I be worried?

I'm freaking out right now about an upcoming EDD eligibility interview. I work for a restaurant staffing agency where I pick up shifts through their job app. Last week I discovered they paid me $10 in JANUARY for some onboarding forms I completed back when I was hired. I had NO IDEA this was paid work - my manager said some paperwork might be compensated but never specified which ones, and I've completed other forms that weren't paid at all. I only found out about this payment when I downloaded their separate payroll app to get my W-2. There was this random $10 paystub from January 5th that I never knew existed because I don't regularly check the payroll app (I usually only look at the staffing app for actual shifts). As soon as I saw it, I called EDD right away to report it. The claim specialist told me it was completely fine since I didn't know about the payment and I reported it immediately after discovering it. But now I've been scheduled for a phone eligibility interview! My benefits for this week are stuck on "pending" and I haven't even received the interview notice letter they said would explain what questions they'll ask. I just found out about the interview when I logged in to certify today. I've ALWAYS reported all my other earnings from actual shifts. This $10 thing was a complete oversight because I literally had no way of knowing they paid me. Has anyone dealt with a similar interview situation? What kinds of questions should I expect? I'm so stressed about possibly losing my benefits over $10 I didn't even know about!

They typically call within 15 minutes of your scheduled time, but I'd be ready 30 minutes early just to be safe. The calls often come from blocked or unknown numbers, so make sure you answer all calls around that time. If you absolutely must miss it, call the EDD immediately to explain and reschedule.

Perfect, thank you! I'll be ready well in advance and make sure to pick up any calls that come through.

I went through something very similar last year! The key thing that helped me was being completely transparent during the interview and having documentation ready. Since you immediately called EDD when you discovered the payment, that shows good faith on your part. For your interview, I'd suggest having these ready: - Screenshots of when you first accessed the payroll app (if possible) - Any communication from your employer about the onboarding process - Notes about your call to EDD when you reported it The interviewer will likely ask about your normal reporting process, how you discovered this payment, and why it wasn't reported initially. Just stick to the facts - you had no way of knowing about the payment since it was in a separate app you don't regularly check. Don't stress too much about the $10 amount. EDD sees cases like this regularly where employees genuinely don't know about payments. The fact that you've consistently reported all your other earnings and self-reported this immediately will work strongly in your favor. Most of these interviews are resolved quickly when there's clear evidence it was an honest mistake rather than intentional concealment.
