EDD drastically reduced my weekly benefit from $450 to $150 despite same union wages - what happened?

I'm completely baffled by what's happening with my new EDD claim. I've worked in the animation industry for 8+ years, and my union contract guarantees the same wage rate. I just filed a new claim after 7 months of steady work (typical cycle in my industry), and instead of the $450/week I've always received, my WBA is suddenly $150! No explanation from EDD at all. My base period wages shouldn't have changed - I earned around $76K during the quarters they'd be looking at, which always qualified me for the maximum benefit before. I've tried calling 40+ times over the past 10 days and sent THREE messages through UI Online, but no response. I'm in LA with $2,800 rent due next week, and this $300/week difference is making it impossible to stay afloat. Has EDD changed their calculation method? Did they somehow miss my reported wages? Has anyone experienced a sudden dramatic decrease like this despite having the same employment history?

UPDATE: I finally spoke with an EDD rep! I used Claimyr as suggested and got a callback within 40 minutes. The rep confirmed that two studios didn't report my wages correctly. I'm submitting the reconsideration form tomorrow with all my pay stubs. She said I should continue certifying at the lower benefit amount, and once they process my documentation (estimated 2-3 weeks), they'll issue retroactive payments for the difference. For anyone in the animation/film industry reading this thread later - ALWAYS check your award notice carefully to make sure all your employers are listed correctly! Thank you all for your help!

Excellent! Make sure to keep the confirmation number from your reconsideration submission. This will make it much easier to follow up if you need to call about the status. Glad you're getting it resolved!

This is such a common issue for those of us in creative industries! I work in commercial production and had the exact same thing happen - my benefit amount dropped from $320 to $89 because EDD was only showing wages from one production company out of four I'd worked for that year. The entertainment payroll companies sometimes use different reporting methods or there are delays in when they submit wage data to EDD. I'm glad you got through to someone and are getting it sorted! For future reference, I now always request a wage and potential benefit estimate before filing my claim so I can catch these issues early. The form is DE 4320WS if anyone else wants to do this proactively.

EDD phone number 1800 - Which one actually works to reach a human?

I keep seeing different EDD phone number 1800 variations posted everywhere and I'm getting confused about which one actually connects you to a real person. I've tried 1-800-300-5616 about 40 times today and keep getting the 'too busy' message. Someone told me there's also an 833 number that's supposedly better? Are these the same line or different? I need to talk to someone about my claim status and I'm tired of wasting time calling the wrong numbers.

Reality check: The EDD phone number 1800 system wasn't designed for this call volume. Manual calling works but you need to treat it like a part-time job. Set realistic expectations.

This is the truth. I cleared my entire schedule for 3 days just to get one call through. It's not sustainable.

Exactly why callback services exist. The system is broken and they provide a workaround that actually functions.

I've been following this thread and wanted to share my experience - I spent 2 weeks trying to get through the 1800 EDD number manually, probably made 300+ attempts. Finally broke down and used one of those callback services everyone mentions (Claimyr) and honestly wish I'd done it from day one. Got connected to an agent within 30 minutes and resolved my claim issue same day. The $20 fee felt steep when unemployed but compare that to the time and stress of endless redialing - totally worth it. For anyone still on the fence, the manual approach might work eventually but these services exist because the system is genuinely broken for individual callers.

Can I get EDD benefits while suspended from healthcare job for failing required certification exam?

I'm in a tough spot with my healthcare job and wondering if EDD is an option. My employer has put me on temporary suspension because I couldn't pass my required certification exam (failed it 3 times now). They won't let me return until I pass, but the exam costs $250 each attempt and I'm running out of money. I'm technically still employed, just not allowed to work. Would I qualify for unemployment benefits in this situation? I'm actively looking for other jobs just in case I can't pass this exam on my next try, but I need some income in the meantime. Has anyone dealt with something similar with professional certifications and EDD? Would they consider me "available for work" since I'm still trying to pass this exam?

After you file your initial claim, you'll start receiving certification forms every two weeks. Be 100% honest when reporting your job search activities and any income. Being suspended for not passing an exam is different from being fired for misconduct, which works in your favor. But they'll want to see that you're making a genuine effort to resolve your employment situation - either by passing the exam or finding suitable work elsewhere. Also, start documenting everything now. Keep emails from your employer about the suspension, exam registration receipts, study materials you've purchased, etc. Having this documentation ready for your eligibility interview will help tremendously.

Thank you - I've started a folder with all my documentation already. I have the email from my supervisor about the suspension and my exam attempts. I've been applying to at least 3 jobs every day too, so I'll keep detailed records of all of that.

I'm dealing with a similar situation right now as a medical assistant - failed my certification renewal exam twice and my clinic suspended me until I pass. What I learned from talking to EDD is that the key factor is whether your employer considers this a "temporary suspension" vs "termination for cause." Since you're still technically employed and they're willing to take you back once you pass, that's actually good for your case. Make sure when you apply that you emphasize you're actively job searching AND working toward resolving the certification issue. One thing that helped my case was getting a letter from my employer stating that this is a temporary suspension pending certification, not a firing. Maybe ask your supervisor if they can provide something like that? It shows EDD that you have a clear path back to work. Also, have you looked into any free or low-cost exam prep resources? Some community colleges offer certification prep courses that might help you finally pass on the next attempt.

EDD Phone Interview No-Show But Status Changed to Paid - Money Network Card Questions

So confused right now! I had my eligibility interview scheduled for today at 2:30 PM. Took the day off from job searching, made sure my phone was charged, and waited by it for over an hour. No call came through. I was starting to panic thinking I somehow missed it, but then I checked my UI Online account and noticed my status changed from 'pending' to 'paid' for the last 3 weeks! I've never received unemployment before - do they automatically mail you that Money Network debit card thing? Or do I need to call EDD to request it? Not sure if the interview was canceled because they decided I'm eligible or if there was a glitch. Anyone else experience this? How long does the card usually take to arrive? I'm really tight on cash after being laid off from my hospital admin job last month.

UPDATE: My Money Network card arrived today! That was only 6 days after my status changed to paid. The envelope really did look like junk mail - plain white with very little indication of what was inside. I've set up the online account and app like someone suggested. Already transferred my funds to my regular bank account! Thanks everyone for your help and advice. Such a relief to have this sorted out!

Awesome! Glad it worked out for you. Just remember to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks even if you're receiving payments. A lot of people forget and then their claims get messed up. The UI Online system will remind you when it's time to certify again.

Congratulations on getting this resolved so quickly! Your experience is actually a great example of how the system can work efficiently when everything lines up properly. Since you mentioned you're new to unemployment benefits, here are a few additional tips that might help: 1) Keep all your paperwork and screenshots of your UI Online account - sometimes glitches happen and you'll want proof of payments, 2) Set up text or email alerts in your UI Online account so you never miss certification deadlines, and 3) Even though you got approved without the interview, keep documenting your job search activities just in case they ever audit your claim later. The fact that you were laid off from a hospital admin job during staffing changes probably made your case very straightforward for them to approve. Best of luck with your job search!

EDD approved benefits after reasonable assurance denial - still need to certify?

So I'm completely confused about my EDD claim status. I'm a substitute teacher and applied for unemployment during summer break. I initially got denied because of 'reasonable assurance' that I'd have work in the fall semester. The denial letter came about 3 weeks ago. But yesterday I checked my account and there's $1,850 sitting there on my EDD debit card?? AND they're still sending me certification notices telling me to certify for the next two weeks. I'm afraid to touch the money because I don't want to get hit with an overpayment later. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I keep certifying? Should I call EDD to report this apparent mistake or just consider myself lucky? I'm worried they'll realize the error and demand all the money back with penalties.

UPDATE: I finally got through to EDD today! The rep explained that while I initially got denied for reasonable assurance as a substitute teacher, they did a second review and found I qualified based on my tutoring center work, which wasn't subject to the reasonable assurance rule since it's a private company. My benefit amount is lower than it would've been with just substitute teaching, but I do qualify! Thanks everyone for your help. And special thanks to whoever suggested Claimyr - that's how I finally got through after trying for days.

yay!!! glad it worked out for u!! make sure u keep certifying every 2 weeks

Wow, this is such a helpful thread! I'm a substitute teacher too and just got denied for reasonable assurance, but I also work part-time at a private daycare center. After reading all this, I'm wondering if I should appeal or wait to see if they do a second review automatically? @Yara Haddad - did you have to do anything specific to trigger that second review, or did it just happen on its own? I'm hesitant to spend money on services like Claimyr if there's a chance EDD will review it themselves.
