SDI claim for pregnancy stuck pending for 1+ month, can't reach EDD. Emergency funds depleted. Help!
I'm really struggling with my SDI claim for pregnancy disability. It's been stuck in pending status for over a month now, and I can't get through to anyone at EDD. I've used up most of my emergency funds paying bills, and I'm getting worried about upcoming hospital expenses. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice on how to speed up the process or get in touch with someone who can help?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I was in the same boat last year. It took me almost 2 months to get my first payment. The system is so broken 😤

2 months?! That's insane. How did you manage to pay your bills?

It was rough. Had to borrow money from family and max out a credit card. Not ideal, but what can you do? 🤷♀️

This is why I'm scared to even apply for SDI. The horror stories are real 😱

Have you tried contacting your local assembly member's office? They can sometimes help speed things up with EDD. Worth a shot!

I hadn't thought of that! Do you know how I would go about finding my assembly member?

Just google '[your city] assembly member' and it should come up. Most have a 'contact us' form on their website for constituent services. Good luck!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm skeptical. How do we know this isn't just some scam?

I get the skepticism, but I promise it's legit. Used it twice now. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Can confirm, I've used it too. Bit pricey but beats sitting on hold all day.

Here's what worked for me: 1. Call right when they open at 8am. You might have to try a few days in a row. 2. If you can't get through, try calling at 4pm. Sometimes the queue clears out late in the day. 3. Use all the extensions. I had luck with the employer line once (I know, not supposed to, but desperate times...) 4. Keep detailed records of when you call and who you talk to. 5. Be super nice to the rep when you finally get one. They deal with angry people all day. 6. If all else fails, contact your state rep or assembly member. Hang in there! The system sucks, but you'll get through eventually.

This is why we need major reform in our social safety net systems. It's ridiculous that pregnant women have to jump through so many hoops just to get the support they're entitled to. Vote, people!

Yeah but who's gonna fix it? Politicians don't care about us regular folks 🙄

Pro tip: if you're really in a bind, reach out to local charities or churches. Many have emergency funds to help people in situations like this. It's not a long-term solution, but it might help tide you over until EDD gets their act together.
