Need EDD PFL 'unable to apply' proof for CalFresh - any way to get documentation?

I've been trying to apply for EDD PFL for caregiving for my elderly mom (stroke last month), but the online system keeps glitching out when I submit. Now my CalFresh caseworker is asking for proof that I've 'attempted to file for all benefits I'm eligible for' before they'll process my food assistance renewal. Has anyone had this problem? Is there a way to get documentation from EDD proving I TRIED to apply but couldn't? The CalFresh office needs something official showing I attempted to file for PFL but their system wouldn't let me complete it. I've called EDD 23 times this week with no luck getting through!

Take screenshots of the error messages you're getting when the system glitches out. That should work as proof for CalFresh. Also, try applying for PFL using the paper form DE2501F instead of the online system - you can download it from the EDD website and mail it in. That way you'll have a paper trail of your application attempt.

Thanks for suggesting screenshots - I have a few but the caseworker specifically said she needs something 'official from EDD' since screenshots could be faked. Would the paper form work if I get proof of mailing? I'm worried about delaying my CalFresh even longer...

For your CalFresh verification, you can request an official "Application Attempt Statement" from EDD. The process is: 1. Call the PFL office and request to speak with a claims specialist (not just a general rep) 2. Explain you need documentation of your attempt to apply for your CalFresh case 3. They can generate a form letter confirming your application attempts 4. Ask them to email it to you, or they can mail it I work with both systems and this is the proper documentation CalFresh should accept. The technical error isn't your fault, and this is a common issue when benefits systems don't talk to each other properly.

Saved me HOURS of redial hell when I had a similar problem with my maternity leave claim. The entire system is designed to frustrate u until u give up trying. They WANT u to fail at applying so they don't have to pay benefits. My sister works for the county and says they all know EDD is impossible to reach. Your caseworker should know this!!! Tell them to check the "good cause" box for inability to comply due to system failure.

I tried explaining this to my caseworker but she said she needs something in writing from EDD. Seems like they don't talk to each other at all between departments.

My sister had to get documentation like this last year when she was applying for emergency TANF and couldn't complete her disability application. She went to the physical EDD office and explained the situation and they gave her a signed letter right there! Try finding your nearest physical location if you can get there.

There's an office about 40 minutes from me by bus. Might be worth the trip if I can get this resolved in person. Did your sister need an appointment or could she just walk in?

Just wanted to add - when you do reach EDD, ask specifically for a "Verification of Application Status" form. This is the official document that CalFresh should accept. Make sure to tell the EDD rep you need it to show you attempted to apply but encountered system errors. They should date it and include the exact technical issue you experienced.

It's technically form DE2525CF, but many EDD reps just know it as the "verification letter." Having the form number might help expedite things when you reach someone.

OMG i just remembered another thing u can try - the online contact form on the EDD website. i used it once and actually got a reply in like 2 days! maybe do that and explain u need proof for calfresh??
