FMLA approval taking forever (2+ weeks) - need advice on speeding up process
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with my FMLA leave. It's been almost two weeks since I applied and I haven't heard anything back yet. I'm trying to resolve this approval issue but I'm not sure what to do next. Has anyone else experienced long delays like this? Any advice on how to speed up the process or who I should contact?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through something similar last year. Have you tried calling the HR department? Sometimes they can give you an update or push things along.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've left a couple messages with HR but haven't heard back. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.

Pro tip: call HR first thing in the morning. Thats when theyre most likely to pick up 👍

Two weeks isnt that long tbh. When I applied for FMLA it took almost a month to get approved. The system is slow af 🐌

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your paperwork - application, doctor's notes, everything. 2. Send a follow-up email to HR and your direct supervisor. CC your department head if possible. 3. In the email, politely ask for an update and provide a timeline of your application. 4. If you don't hear back in 2-3 business days, start calling. 5. Document EVERYTHING. Every call, email, who you spoke to. 6. If it goes beyond 3 weeks, consider reaching out to your company's FMLA administrator (if different from HR). 7. Know your rights. The company has certain obligations under FMLA law. Stay persistent but professional. Good luck!

This is solid advice. I'd add: check your company's FMLA policy. Some have specific timelines they're supposed to follow.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds sketchy. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How does it work exactly? Do they just keep redialing until they get through?

From what I understand, they use some kind of automated system to navigate the phone menus and wait on hold. When a real person picks up, it calls you. Pretty clever actually!

This whole FMLA process is a joke. It's 2023, why does it still take so long to process a simple request? 🤦♂️

Careful what you wish for. Faster isn't always better when it comes to gov't "upgrades" lol

Hey OP, what state are you in? Some states have additional family leave laws that might help you out.

I'm in California. Do they have any special laws here?

Oh yeah, CA has some of the best family leave laws! Look into CFRA (California Family Rights Act). It can provide additional protections beyond FMLA.
