EDD pregnancy disability waiting period over 4 weeks - when will first payment arrive?
I started my pregnancy disability leave on March 12, 2025 (delivered my baby girl on March 19!), and my doctor submitted all the paperwork right away. It's now April 17, and my online account STILL shows I'm in the "waiting period" phase. I thought the waiting period was only 7 days?? My bank account is getting dangerously low, and I'm starting to panic. I can't get through on the phone - just endless busy signals or disconnects. Does anyone know how long this normally takes? My HR person said I'd get my first payment within 2 weeks. I understand everything will be backdated, but my rent is due in 2 weeks and I literally cannot wait any longer. Is there something wrong with my claim that I can't see? The online account just shows "claim processing" with no explanation.

The waiting period IS only 7 days, so something definitely isn't right. When you say you're in the "waiting period," do you mean your claim status actually says that, or are you just waiting for payment? Those are two different things. If it actually says "waiting period" after more than a month, there's likely an issue with your paperwork. Some common problems that cause delays: - Doctor didn't complete their portion correctly - Employer verification is missing or inconsistent - Your last day worked doesn't match what your employer reported - Income verification issues Check your Documents section in your online account to see if there are any notifications or requests for additional info that you might have missed.

•Thanks for responding! It literally says "waiting period" on my claim status. I just double-checked my documents section and there's nothing there asking for more information. My doctor definitely completed everything - I watched her submit it electronically from her office. Could it be that my employer messed something up? How would I even know?

•Omg 5 weeks?!? I don't think I can wait that long. Did they ever explain what the holdup was? I'm going to try calling at 8am tomorrow.

Congrats on your baby girl! Mine just turned 1 and I remember how stressed I was about the EDD payments too. The waiting period should definitely be over by now. One thing to check - are you looking at your Pregnancy Disability claim or did you accidentally set up a PFL (baby bonding) claim? They're totally different and the PFL doesn't start until after your disability claim ends, which is usually 6-8 weeks after birth.

•Thank you! I'm pretty sure I'm looking at my pregnancy disability claim because it shows a start date of March 12th. I haven't even applied for baby bonding yet since I'm still dealing with this mess. I'm so confused why this is taking so long!

I had almost the exact same issue in January. My online account was stuck showing "waiting period" for weeks, but the problem turned out to be that they needed additional income verification from my employer. The frustrating thing was that they never notified me! The only way I found out was by finally getting through to a rep on the phone. I wasted days trying to call before I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days with no luck. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 Once I got through, the representative was able to see that there was an income verification issue that wasn't showing up in my online portal. They fixed it on the spot and I received payment within 3 days. Definitely worth getting through to a live person.

•Thank you! I'm going to check this out. At this point I'm desperate and will try anything to get this resolved. Did they ask for any specific information when you called? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

As someone who's helped many clients navigate the EDD system, I can tell you this is unfortunately common, especially with pregnancy disability claims. The system is supposed to process claims within 14 days, but delays of 3-5 weeks have become more common since their system update in late 2024. The most likely causes are: 1. Medical verification issue - Even though your doctor submitted electronically, the EDD system sometimes fails to properly match records. 2. Base period wage verification - If your income fluctuated significantly in the past 18 months, this can trigger a review. 3. Employer response delay - Your employer has 10 days to verify employment details, and many take the full time or miss the deadline. 4. Internal EDD routing issues - Some claims get stuck in verification queues without any visible status update to you. The only reliable way to resolve this is to speak directly with a claims specialist who can view the internal notes on your account. When you do get through, request an "expedited processing" due to financial hardship. They can flag your claim for priority handling. Documents you should have ready: your claim number, photo ID, your last paystub before disability, and birth verification (if they request it).

•This is SO helpful, thank you! I definitely had variable income in the past year (I was part-time, then full-time, then got a promotion), so maybe that's triggering a review. I'll make sure to have all those documents ready when I call. And I'll definitely ask for expedited processing - this really is becoming a financial hardship.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? THIS MAKES ME SO MAD!!! I went through this EXACT same thing in February. They kept my claim in "processing" for SIX FREAKING WEEKS!! No explanation, no requests for additional info, NOTHING! I called about 500 times and either got disconnected or was on hold for 2+ hours only to get disconnected. The kicker? When I finally got through, they said "oh there's no issue with your claim, it just hasn't been assigned to a processor yet." WHAT?? They were literally just sitting on it! The system is BROKEN. I had to put everything on credit cards and now I'm drowning in debt. The EDD is an absolute joke and they should be ashamed of how they treat new mothers. This happens to SO many women and it's completely unacceptable.

•Same happened to my sister! She wound up borrowing money from like 3 different people to make her mortgage payment. The system really is broken. And they wonder why people get so stressed out during what should be a special time with their new baby.

•Ugh, I'm so sorry that happened to you. It's completely ridiculous! I'm supposed to be recovering from childbirth and bonding with my baby, not stressing about whether I can pay my bills. I'm going to try calling again tomorrow and hopefully I can get this resolved.

Just wanted to follow up - did you have a C-section or vaginal delivery? That can affect your claim duration and sometimes how it's processed. For vaginal delivery, standard disability is 6 weeks post-birth, while C-section is 8 weeks. Make sure your doctor specified this correctly. Also, if your claim shows March 12 as the start date but you delivered on March 19, that means you're on disability for pregnancy complications before delivery, which then transitions to recovery after delivery. Sometimes this transition isn't processed smoothly in their system and requires manual intervention. When you do get through to EDD, specifically ask if your claim has been properly transitioned from pre-delivery disability to post-delivery recovery. Many representatives don't check this unless specifically asked.

•I had a vaginal delivery. And yes, I started disability a week before delivery because of high blood pressure issues. I didn't realize that could cause problems with processing! That's really helpful info - I'll definitely ask about the transition when I call. Thank you!!

I just remembered something else! Check if your claim was assigned a different claim ID after you gave birth. Sometimes they create an entirely new claim for the post-birth recovery period rather than continuing your pre-birth disability claim. If this happened, you might be looking at the wrong claim status. Try going to your claim history and see if there's another claim that was opened around your delivery date.

•I just checked and I only see one claim, but that's a really good idea. Maybe they created a new one but it's not showing up in my account for some reason? This whole system is so confusing!

•I actually did get through using Claimyr! The agent said there was an issue with how my pre-delivery disability was supposed to transition to post-delivery. Apparently my doctor needed to submit additional documentation confirming the birth date, which she did today. The agent said I should receive payment within 5-7 business days. I'm cautiously optimistic!
