EDD PFL for caring for sick child - qualification requirements?

My 16-year-old daughter has been hospitalized for severe pneumonia since last Thursday and doctors say she'll need home care for another 1-2 weeks after discharge. I need to take time off work to care for her but I'm the primary income earner and worried about lost wages. Can I qualify for any EDD benefits during this time? Has anyone successfully applied for PFL for a sick child (not baby bonding)? My HR department wasn't very helpful and just gave me FMLA paperwork. I'm in Southern California if that matters for the application process.

Also important: PFL has a 7-day unpaid waiting period, and you can use sick leave or vacation during that time if available. Actually, the 7-day waiting period was eliminated for PFL back in 2018. There's no waiting period anymore for caregiving benefits. You're thinking of State Disability Insurance (SDI), which still has the waiting period. Common mixup!

I filed for PFL when my mother was sick last year and it was NIGHTMARE getting through to EDD with questions. Kept calling for DAYS and either got disconnected or was on hold forever. Make sure you understand the difference between FMLA and PFL! FMLA is job protection (unpaid) and PFL is wage replacement (paid). You probably need BOTH for your situation, so fill out the HR forms too. FMLA protects your job while you're out caring for your daughter, and PFL gives you income during that time. They run concurrently but are completely separate programs.

That makes so much more sense now! HR wasn't clear about this at all. So I need to complete both the FMLA paperwork through my employer AND apply for PFL through EDD? Do they need the same medical documentation or do I need separate forms for each?

does ur work have any paid sick leave u can use too? i used 1 week sick leave then got pfl after that and it worked out good. also keep all hospital papers and dr notes even if u think u dont need them, edd sometimes asks for more proof later
