Can I certify for UI while waiting for PFL baby bonding claim to process?

I'm totally confused about my benefits right now and worried about messing everything up! My baby arrived on January 14th, and I just submitted my PFL baby bonding application 3 days ago (but I listed 1/14/2025 as my start date). Here's where I'm stuck - I have two UI weeks available to certify right now (week ending 1/14 and week ending 1/21). Should I go ahead and certify for UI for these weeks while my PFL claim is processing, or will that somehow interfere with my PFL claim? I'm especially confused about the week that includes my baby's birth date. Will EDD figure this out or am I supposed to do something specific? First-time mom here trying not to mess up my benefits!

NEVER EVER certify for UI and PFL for the same weeks!!! EDD's computer system will flag it and then you'll get hit with an overpayment notice months later when you least expect it. They might even add penalties!!! And good luck getting anyone on the phone to fix it - I spent WEEKS trying to reach someone when this happened to me. The EDD system is BROKEN!!

just wondering but did u get pregnancy disability before this? i thought u had to do SDI first, then PFL for baby bonding? im pregnant and trying to figure all this out too lol

You're confusing two different scenarios. If you're employed and going on leave, you typically get SDI for pregnancy disability first, then transition to PFL for baby bonding. But if someone is on UI (unemployment) and then has a baby, they can switch directly from UI to PFL baby bonding without SDI in between. To answer your follow-up question - yes, EDD will notify you when your PFL claim is approved. You'll get an email notification (if you opted for electronic communications) and a letter in the mail. You can also check your claim status online, but the system isn't always updated in real-time. PFL claims are taking anywhere from 7-21 days to process right now. They're supposed to be processed within 14 days, but there's often a backlog, especially at the beginning of the year.
