CA EDD PFL: Can both parents get leave? SDI for pregnancy?
Hey everyone, I'm pregnant and trying to figure out what family leave options my husband and I have. Does anyone know if we both get family leave? Also, I'm wondering about disability benefits for myself during pregnancy. Any info would be super helpful!

I appealed and won! It's a pain but worth it. Make sure you have all your medical docs in order

Has anyone used their PFL intermittently instead of all at once? Thinking about spreading it out but not sure how that works

I did! It was great for us. You just need to coordinate with your employer and be clear about your schedule

Thanks for all the info! Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get approved for these benefits?

It can vary, but for me it took about 2-3 weeks for SDI and a bit longer for PFL. Start the process ASAP!

Approval times can be unpredictable. I've heard of cases taking even longer due to documentation errors, so double-check everything you submit.

Congrats on the baby! š Here's what I know: ā¢ Paid Family Leave (PFL) is available for both parents. You can each get up to 8 weeks of benefits. ā¢ For you, look into State Disability Insurance (SDI) for pregnancy-related disability. ā¢ To apply, you'll need to contact the Employment Development Department (EDD). ā¢ Make sure to ask about eligibility requirements and how much you'll receive. ā¢ Don't forget to check with your employers too - some offer additional benefits! Good luck and enjoy this special time! š

Great summary! I'd also add that it's crucial to start the application process early because approval times can vary.

Yep, it went up to 70% of your wages for lower-income workers. Check the EDD website for the exact numbers

I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that calls for you, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20 but totally worth it imo Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Navigating family leave and disability benefits can be a bit daunting, but here's a comprehensive overview to help you out. In California, both you and your husband can apply for Paid Family Leave (PFL), which provides up to 8 weeks of benefits each. This can be a great relief as you adjust to having a new family member. As for your own needs during pregnancy, State Disability Insurance (SDI) is typically available for pregnancy-related disabilities. To apply, you need to contact the Employment Development Department (EDD). Note that the application process can sometimes be cumbersome, so it's a good idea to start early and document all interactions. Services like Claimyr can be useful in navigating communication with EDD, but it's important to weigh the cost and privacy concerns. Be mindful of the waiting period for SDI, and ensure you understand how it affects your finances. Additionally, it's wise to verify job protection under laws like FMLA or CFRA, as these can safeguard your employment during your leave. Lastly, while the 8-week period may feel short compared to other countries, make sure you maximize any benefits offered by your employer or explore options for intermittent leave if that suits your family's needs better.

Hey OP, don't forget to factor in the waiting period for SDI. You don't get paid for the first week!
