Does my partner still qualify for CA PFL after being let go? Need advice ASAP!

Hey everyone, I have a question about paid family leave. My partner just got let go from his job, but he hasn't taken his paid family leave for our new baby yet. Does anyone know if he still qualifies for it? We're not sure how to proceed or where to apply. Any advice would be really appreciated!

I found a way to solve paid family leave eligibility issues, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq0BdGREdoc

I think he might still be eligible! From what I know, as long as he meets the requirements, he should be able to apply. Have him check the EDD website and look for the Paid Family Leave option. It's separate from regular disability insurance.

Just make sure he applies ASAP. There might be a time limit after leaving a job.

Ugh, the EDD is such a nightmare to deal with. Good luck getting through to anyone there šŸ™„

For real tho. I spent weeks trying to get someone on the phone. It's like they don't want to help us šŸ¤”

I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the menu, waits on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Woah, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

Yeah, I was skeptical at first too. But I was desperate and gave it a shot. It actually worked! Saved me hours of frustration.

$20 tho? Seems kinda steep just to talk to someone...

I get it, but think about how much time you waste on hold. For me, it was worth every penny to finally get my issue resolved.

I went thru this last year. Your partner should still qualify if he meets the work and earnings requirements. The tricky part is that he needs to have earned enough in the base period, which is like the 5-18 months before the claim starts. Also, being let go shouldn't affect PFL eligibility, since its not the same as quitting.

Has anyone else noticed how the rules for this stuff seem to change every other week? šŸ¤” I swear, keeping up with EDD is a full-time job itself!

Here's what I know about Paid Family Leave (PFL) in California: ā€¢ PFL provides up to 8 weeks of partial wage replacement benefits. ā€¢ You don't have to be currently employed to claim PFL. ā€¢ There's a 7-day unpaid waiting period before benefits start. ā€¢ You need to have earned at least $300 in wages that were subject to SDI deductions during your base period. ā€¢ The base period is the 5 to 18 months before your claim begins. ā€¢ Being let go doesn't disqualify you, as long as you meet other requirements. ā€¢ You can apply online through the EDD website or by mail. ā€¢ You'll need to provide medical documentation for bonding with a new child. ā€¢ Benefits are about 60-70% of your highest quarterly earnings during the base period. ā€¢ PFL is funded through employee payroll deductions, not by employers. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

This is great info, but does anyone know if the 8 weeks have to be taken all at once? Or can you split it up?

Good question! You can actually split up the 8 weeks. You don't have to take it all at once, but you do need to use it within the first year of the child's birth or adoption.

Not to be that guy, but have you tried calling your local assemblymember's office? They can sometimes help push things through with EDD faster.

I hadn't even thought of that! Great idea, thanks!

Protip: document EVERYTHING. Save all emails, take screenshots, write down who you talked to and when. The system is a mess and you might need to prove stuff later.
