Missing one day on first EDD SDI payment - why wasn't Friday 9/29 included?
I just got my first disability payment after filing for carpal tunnel syndrome surgery recovery, but I'm confused about the dates. My payment only covers Wednesday 9/27 and Thursday 9/28, but nothing for Friday 9/29. Is this normal? My doctor put my disability start date as 9/27/2025 on the medical certification. I thought payments were supposed to be for a full two-week period? This partial payment is way less than I was expecting and I'm worried about covering rent next month. Has anyone else had their first payment missing days?

This is normal for the first payment. EDD SDI has a 7-day unpaid waiting period before benefits begin, but they sometimes split up the first payment weirdly. Friday might show up on your next payment cycle. The system often groups days differently for the initial payment versus regular biweekly payments. Check your claim history in SDI Online to confirm your benefit start date.

•Thank you! So will the next payment include that Friday plus the next two weeks? Or will they just skip paying me for that day completely? I'm stressing about every dollar right now.

You need to call EDD right now!!! This happened to me last year and it was because they entered my claim start date wrong in the system. If you dont fix it, they might keep shorting you days on EVERY payment. I had to wait 3 HOURS on hold but got it fixed. You can try calling them, but good luck - I've had better results using Claimyr.com to get through to an actual agent. They have this system that connects you directly instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video demo here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. After I used it, I got my missing days paid in the next payment cycle.

it might b cuz of how the benefit week ends. i think edd disability payment weeks run sunday-saturday so if ur first week started on a wednesday they only pay u for the partial week up front. next payment should include that friday unless something else is wrong

•Yeah this ⬆️ EDD disability pays based on their calendar weeks not yours. My first payment was weird too

The SDI payment schedule is actually pretty straightforward once you understand it, though EDD doesn't explain it well. For your first payment, here's the breakdown: 1. 7-day waiting period (unpaid) - this starts on your disability date 2. After waiting period, benefits begin 3. Payment cycles run Sunday-Saturday Since your disability began on 9/27 (Wednesday), your 7-day waiting period is 9/27-10/3. Benefits would technically start 10/4. However, sometimes EDD makes exceptions and pays partial weeks during the waiting period minus the initial 7 days, which might explain why you got paid for 2 days but not the third. I recommend checking your claim details on SDI Online. Click on "View Payment Activity" and it should show the exact period this payment covers. You can also check "Claim History" to see your official disability period. If the dates don't align with what your doctor certified, then definitely call EDD.

•Wait, I'm confused now. If I have a 7-day waiting period starting 9/27, why would I get paid for 9/27 and 9/28 at all? Shouldn't those first 7 days be completely unpaid?

I had this EXACT issue back in January with my disability after shoulder surgery. So frustrating! The problem was my doctor put one date on the certification but I entered a different date when I filed my claim. Check your DE 2501 form. If the dates don't match what your doctor submitted, you need to call EDD right away to fix it. When they fixed mine, I got backpay for the missing days on my next payment.

•This is a good point. If there's a discrepancy between the claimant's start date and the physician's certification date, EDD typically defaults to the later date. They should send you a notice if this happens, but sometimes those notices get delayed or lost.

I just checked my online account more carefully. My claim history shows "First day of disability: 9/27/2025" but under payment activity it says "Benefit period: 9/27/2025 - 9/28/2025" and "Week ending: 9/30/2025" which doesn't even make sense? Why would they cut off Friday when the week ends on Saturday? I'm definitely going to call tomorrow.

•This is EXACTLY what happened to me! Their system sometimes splits payments at month-end for accounting reasons. Call them and make sure they have your correct disability period. Don't wait because it can affect future payments too. And seriously, if you can't get through, try that Claimyr service - saved me hours of frustration.

Sometimes the 1st payment is weird because of the month ending. Sept 29 was the last day of the month maybe thats why? My husband had disability last year and his payments were always split weird at month end. But he got all his money eventually lol

•That actually makes sense! I wonder if that's all it is. I'll watch for my next payment to see if that Friday shows up. Thanks everyone for the help - this system is so confusing!

Just to clarify after reading all the responses: The 7-day waiting period doesn't necessarily start on your disability date - it depends on when you filed. If your payment activity shows benefits for 9/27-9/28, then your waiting period might have been completed earlier, possibly from a previous claim or based on when your doctor actually certified your disability. The month-end processing that others mentioned is also a common explanation. EDD's fiscal reporting often results in payments being split at month-end. In this case, 9/29 would appear on your next payment. Definitely call to confirm, but don't panic yet. Your next payment will likely include that Friday plus the next full benefit period.

•Thank you so much for explaining all this! I'll definitely call to make sure everything is correct, but I feel much better understanding how their system works. Really appreciate everyone's help!
