EDD disability claim filed 4 weeks ago - no claim ID received and can't get through by phone
I submitted my disability claim on January 5th after a car accident left me with herniated discs and unable to work. My doctor filled out all the medical certification parts right at their office, and we mailed everything together. It's been almost a month now, and I haven't received ANYTHING from EDD - no letter, no claim ID, nothing! When I try calling, the automated system asks for my claim ID and last payment amount which I obviously don't have yet. I'm getting really worried as my savings are almost gone and my rent is due next week. Is my application lost? Is there a way to check the status without a claim ID? How can I actually speak to a human at EDD to find out what's happening with my claim?

I had the exact same issue last year! Did u try checking SDI Online? Even if u mailed the application u might be able to register an account and see if theres any info there

•I didn't know I could check online if I mailed my application! I'll try that right now. Did you find your info that way?

Sometimes the mail is super slow with EDD! It took almost SIX WEEKS for me to get my first letter when I filed for disability last winter. The whole system is broken and they don't care how desperate people get waiting for their money. I had to borrow from my parents just to make rent. Have you tried going to an actual EDD office in person? Sometimes that's the ONLY way to get answers.

•Six weeks?? That's insane! I can't wait that long. I'll try to find an EDD office near me. Do you know if I need an appointment?

•No appointment needed but get there EARLY like before they open or you'll be waiting ALL DAY. And bring everything - ID, all medical paperwork, any confirmation you have from mailing it. They'll try to turn you away for any reason they can find!!!

You actually have a few options to handle this situation: 1. Register for an SDI Online account at edd.ca.gov/disability if you haven't already. Even with a mailed application, your claim should eventually appear there. 2. Call the SDI customer service line at 1-800-480-3287, but when prompted for your claim ID, press 0 or say "representative" multiple times. Sometimes this will bypass the automated system. 3. You can also try sending a message through the Contact EDD section on the website, though response times vary. Your claim isn't necessarily lost - the current processing time for mailed applications is running about 3-4 weeks minimum. With their backlog from the winter holidays, some claims are taking 5-6 weeks before the first contact from EDD.

•Thank you for these suggestions! I tried pressing 0 multiple times when calling, but it just kept asking for the claim ID and eventually hung up on me. I'll try setting up the online account today.

I've been through this exact situation before and spent literally weeks trying to get through to EDD. After dozens of failed attempts using the regular phone line, I found a service called Claimyr that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They basically call EDD for you and then connect you when they reach someone. I was skeptical at first but it saved me so much frustration. You can see how it works at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Seriously worth it when you're desperate to figure out what's going on with your claim.

•I've never heard of this service before. I'll check out that video. At this point, I'm willing to try anything to get this sorted out. Thanks for the suggestion!

•does that service actually work? sounds like a scam tbh. edd should be reachable without paying extra

•It's definitely not a scam - it worked for me when nothing else did. Of course EDD SHOULD be reachable, but the reality is they're totally overwhelmed and understaffed. When you're about to miss rent payments because you can't get your disability benefits, you do what you need to do.

When I filed for pregnancy disability in 2024, I had a similar issue where my doctor mailed everything in. I went ahead and created an SDI Online account while waiting, and my claim suddenly appeared in the system after about 3 weeks even though I hadn't received anything in the mail yet. Once I could see it online, I was able to see what was missing (they needed additional medical info) and fix it quickly. So definitely try the online route!

•That's really helpful to know! I just created an SDI Online account but nothing is showing up yet. I guess I'll keep checking it daily. Did you get a notification when your claim appeared or did you just have to keep logging in to check?

•I just kept checking every couple days. They never sent any notification that it was in the system. One day it just appeared!

Hey, just wondering if you saved a copy of your application before mailing it? I made this mistake once and realized I should have kept the claim number from the form. Without that it's really tough to track things. Did your doctor give you any paperwork with a claim number on it maybe? Also sometimes they send the information to a different address than you expect if there was any confusion on the form.

•Honestly, I don't think I saved a copy. The doctor's office handled most of the paperwork and just had me sign the forms. I didn't even think about keeping copies. That was stupid of me. And my address hasn't changed, so they should have the correct one. This is so frustrating!

•Don't be too hard on yourself! The EDD system is confusing even for people who've used it before. One more thing you could try - call your doctor's office and see if they have a copy with the claim number or if they've received any communication from EDD about your claim. Sometimes EDD contacts the medical provider first if they need additional information.

I wanted to add that the recent system updates at EDD have created some additional delays. For claims submitted in January 2025, many claimants are experiencing longer than usual processing times. If it's been exactly 4 weeks, I'd recommend: 1. Check if you've received any mail from EDD at all addresses where you might receive mail 2. Contact your doctor to confirm they completed all required sections of the DE 2501 form 3. Verify your application included your correct Social Security Number and date of birth (common reasons for processing delays) 4. Continue checking SDI Online daily If by the end of week 5 you still don't see anything in the system, you might need to consider filing a new claim. However, I'd exhaust all other options first, as filing multiple claims can cause complications.

•This is really helpful information, thank you. I'll double-check with my doctor tomorrow to make sure everything was filled out properly. I really hope I don't have to file a new claim - I've already waited so long and my financial situation is getting more desperate by the day.

my brother had to wait 2 months for his disability to start last year lol the whole system is a joke

•2 MONTHS??? That's criminal! They expect disabled people to just live on air while they take their sweet time processing paperwork! This is exactly why people end up homeless!

Update on what worked for me: after creating my SDI Online account and still seeing nothing after a week, I called my doctor's office to check if they had received any requests from EDD. Turns out EDD HAD contacted them for additional information, but the doctor's office hadn't responded yet. Once they sent in the additional info, my claim started processing. Maybe check with your doctor to see if something similar happened?

•Thank you for the update! I called my doctor's office this morning after reading your comment yesterday, and guess what? They DID receive a request from EDD for additional medical documentation last week but hadn't processed it yet. They're sending it today. I never would have known without your suggestion. Thank you so much!
