EDD denied my SDI claim after payment - Need help with appeal process

I just got my disability payment, but when I checked the messages, it says my benefits were denied and I can appeal. I don't understand why this happened. I did everything right. I was on unemployment before, but I wasn't receiving benefits anymore when I hurt my back while painting at home. That's why I applied for disability. The letter says I had withdrawn from the labor market before my disability date, but that's not true. I was actively looking for work. What should I do now? Has anyone else dealt with this? How long does the appeal process usually take?

Ugh, the EDD is such a mess. I've been dealing with them for months and it's always one problem after another. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather any evidence you have that shows you were looking for work before your injury. Emails, job applications, anything. 2. Write a detailed appeal letter explaining your situation. 3. Include all relevant documentation with your appeal. 4. Submit everything before the deadline on your denial letter. 5. Be prepared to wait. The appeal process can take weeks or even months. Good luck! The system is broken, but don't give up.

This is solid advice. I went through something similar last year. It's a pain, but if you're persistent, you can win your appeal.

Months?! 😱 That's insane. How are people supposed to survive while waiting that long?

0 coins

I know, right? It's ridiculous. The whole system needs an overhaul.

Wait, so they paid you and then said you were denied? That's weird. Are you sure you're reading the messages correctly?

0 coins

Yeah, I double-checked. The payment came through, but the message definitely says I was denied. I'm so confused.

That's messed up. Sounds like a glitch in their system. Definitely appeal and point that out!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at EDD. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds sketchy. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

20 bucks to talk to someone? That's highway robbery! 🤬

I know it sounds weird, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

bruh moment 🤡 EDD really out here playing games with peoples lives smh

Have you considered getting a lawyer? Sometimes having legal representation can speed up the process and increase your chances of winning the appeal.

Lawyers are expensive tho. Not everyone can afford that when they're already struggling with benefits.

True, but some offer free consultations or work on contingency. It's worth looking into at least.

This happened to my cousin last month. Turns out there was a mixup with his dates. He called and got it sorted out pretty quick. Maybe try calling before going through the whole appeal process?

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely try calling first. Fingers crossed it's just a simple mistake. 🤞

The EDD system is so outdated, it's probably running on Windows 95 or something. No wonder there are so many errors. 💻🦖

Hey OP, quick question - did you report any income during your unemployment period? Sometimes that can affect your eligibility for disability.

0 coins

No, I didn't have any income to report during that time. I was just actively looking for work.

Hmm, then it definitely sounds like they made a mistake. Keep pushing for that appeal!

lmao welcome to the club 🎉 we're all stuck in EDD hell together

Pro tip: Keep a detailed log of every interaction you have with EDD. Dates, times, names of reps you talk to, what was said. It'll help if you need to escalate your case later.

This is solid advice. I learned it the hard way. 📝

I'm dealing with something similar right now - got paid but then received a denial notice. It's so confusing! From what I've learned lurking here, it seems like EDD's system has tons of glitches. Definitely appeal it, but also try calling first like @Rachel Clark suggested. Sometimes it really is just a computer error. Make sure you have all your job search records ready - screenshots of applications, emails, anything that proves you were actively looking for work before your injury. The whole "withdrawn from labor market" thing seems to be their go-to reason for denial even when it's not accurate. Don't let them intimidate you - you know what really happened. Keep us posted on how it goes! 🤞
