Do SDI pregnancy benefits show up on 1099G when switching from UI? Tax confusion

Feeling totally confused about my tax situation! I was on unemployment for 6 weeks before starting SDI for my pregnancy in 2025. Now I'm trying to file taxes and people in my mom group are saying SDI will be taxed because I was on UI first. I just checked my 1099G form in my UI Online account and there's only Table A showing my unemployment amount ($4,250) and Table B showing PFL amount ($2,970). But I can't find ANY section showing my SDI pregnancy benefits? I've looked through my SDI Online account too and don't see any tax forms. Does the SDI amount not get reported on a 1099G? Am I missing something obvious? My SDI benefits were way more than my UI+PFL combined so I'm worried about messing up my taxes!

SDI benefits are NOT taxable at the federal level, so they won't appear on your 1099G form. Only UI benefits (Table A) and PFL benefits (Table B) are federally taxable. That's why you're only seeing those two tables. You don't need to report your SDI pregnancy benefits on your federal tax return at all.

Oh thank goodness! That makes so much more sense now. So I only need to report the amounts from Table A and B on my 1099G? The SDI pregnancy payments don't get reported anywhere?

they told me the same thing when i called last year! SDI isnt taxed so no form needed for it

Wait seriously?? I've been reporting my SDI on taxes for 3 years now 🤦‍♀️ No wonder my refunds have been so small!

Your friends in the mom group are WRONG. UI and PFL are taxable, SDI is NOT taxable. I had this EXACT situation in 2024 - was on UI, then SDI for pregnancy, then PFL. Only got a 1099G showing UI and PFL amounts. The EDD website literally states: "State Disability Insurance (SDI) benefits are not subject to federal income tax." So you're good!

That's such a relief! Thank you for confirming. I was stressing about owing a bunch of taxes I haven't set aside money for.

I went through this same confusion last year. Here's what's happening: 1. UI (unemployment) is federally taxable - shows in Table A of 1099G 2. PFL (paid family leave) is federally taxable - shows in Table B of 1099G 3. SDI (state disability insurance) is NOT federally taxable - won't appear on any tax form So you're correct - there is no section for SDI on the 1099G form because you don't need to report that income to the IRS. This is true regardless of whether you were on UI before starting SDI. If you want official confirmation, it's on the EDD website under "Are Disability Insurance Benefits Taxable?" where they clearly state SDI benefits are not subject to federal income tax.

This is 100% accurate. I work with tax clients who receive various EDD benefits, and this confusion happens all the time. SDI pregnancy benefits are not federally taxable, period. Your friends in the mom group are confusing different benefit types.

has anyone been able to actually REACH an edd rep to ask questions like this?? i've called like 20 times this week and keep getting disconnected or put on hold forever. so frustrating when you're trying to figure out something important like taxes!!

I was having the same problem last month trying to sort out my disability tax questions. Someone here recommended using Claimyr.com and it actually worked! They got me connected to an EDD rep in about 12 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Way better than spending hours redialing.

Thank you all so much for the helpful responses! I feel much better now understanding that: 1. SDI pregnancy benefits are NOT federally taxable 2. That's why they don't appear on the 1099G form 3. I only need to report my UI and PFL income from Tables A and B It's so confusing when different benefits have different tax rules. Really appreciate everyone clearing this up for me!

ya i was super worried about this 2 but once i figured it out its not so bad. just remember UI + PFL = taxed, SDI = not taxed!

wait im confused... what if you got SDI for something OTHER than pregnancy? i got SDI for my back surgery last year. is that still not taxed?? the EDD website is so confusing about all this!!

ALL SDI is non-taxable federally regardless of what medical condition it's for. Doesn't matter if it's pregnancy, surgery, broken leg, whatever. SDI = not taxed. Period. The only EDD benefits that are federally taxable are UI and PFL.

One additional clarification: While SDI isn't federally taxable, if you paid into a State Disability Insurance program through payroll deductions (which appears on your paystub), those contributions may be deductible on your Schedule A if you itemize deductions instead of taking the standard deduction. It's listed under state and local income taxes paid. Just something to consider if you itemize!

Oh that's good to know! I usually take the standard deduction, but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for all the tax tips!
