Can I visit EDD office in person for disability claim info after mailing application?
I've been trying to get an update on my disability claim for the past 2 weeks but phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE. I've called probably 20+ times and either get disconnected or sit on hold for hours before giving up. I mailed in my paper application (didn't do the online thing) about 5 weeks ago and haven't heard ANYTHING. No confirmation, no questions, nothing. Has anyone had luck just showing up to an actual EDD office location to ask about their claim status? I don't even know if they have walk-in services for disability claims or if that's just for unemployment. I'm getting really desperate because my savings are almost gone and I need to know if there's a problem with my application. The medical certification was submitted by my doctor right away (I confirmed with their office). Please help - I'm in the San Diego area if that matters for office recommendations.

Unfortunately EDD doesn't handle SDI claims in their physical offices anymore. All disability claims are processed through the SDI offices which don't offer in-person services. It's incredibly frustrating! Mailed claims typically take 4-6 weeks to process, sometimes longer if there's a backlog or issue with your application. Since it's been 5 weeks, you're getting close to when you should hear something. Have you tried checking your claim status online? Even if you applied by mail, you can create an SDI Online account and sometimes view your claim there.

•Thanks for the info. I didn't realize the physical offices couldn't help with SDI. So frustrating! I did try to create an online account but when I enter my info it says it can't find my claim in the system... which has me even more worried something went wrong with my application.

•Same here!!! It's like they don't want us to get our benefits. Been trying for days and can't get a human on the line.

I had the same problem last month calling EDD for my disability claim status. After 3 weeks of failed attempts, I started using Claimyr (claimyr.com) and finally got through to a rep in less than 30 minutes. They have this system that basically waits on hold for you then calls you when an EDD agent is on the line. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I got through, I found out my claim had a simple issue with my employer's info that was easy to fix. Worth it to get answers instead of stressing for weeks.

•Is this legit? Seems sketchy to have a service just to talk to a government agency we should be able to reach ourselves. Has anyone else used this?

•I've used it twice now. It's definitely legitimate - they don't actually process anything for you, they just connect you with an actual EDD agent. The disability offices are just severely understaffed, which is why it's so hard to get through on your own.

I went through the same nightmare when I filed my disability claim by mail in January. Here's what worked for me: 1. Try calling right when they open at 8:00 AM 2. If that doesn't work, try around 4:30 PM (sometimes less busy then) 3. If you still can't get through, send a message through SDI Online (even if you filed by mail, create an account) 4. As a last resort, contact your state assembly member's office - they have liaison staff who can help with EDD issues In my experience, the paper applications take 1-2 weeks longer to process than online ones. Five weeks is definitely getting to the point where you should have heard something. When you do get through, ask them to check if your employer returned the required form - that's often what causes delays.

Just wanted to add - check if your doctor's office actually submitted the correct medical certification form. I've seen many cases where the doctor thinks they submitted everything, but they used the wrong form or didn't complete a required section. The DE 2501 form requires very specific information to be processed correctly. Also, try using the Ask EDD feature on the website to send a message about your claim status. Sometimes they respond to those faster than you can get through by phone.

•Thanks for the reminder about Ask EDD. I'll check with my doctor again too - they said they submitted everything but maybe there was an issue with the form I wasn't aware of.

•That's what I'm worried about! But when I try to create an online account it says it can't find my claim in the system, which makes me think either my application is lost or hasn't been entered into their system yet. So frustrating not knowing what's happening.

As a clarification for everyone in this thread: - EDD unemployment offices (the physical locations) cannot help with SDI or PFL claims - All disability and paid family leave claims are handled by the SDI branch, which doesn't have public-facing offices - If you mailed in a claim, it first needs to be manually entered into their system before it shows up online - The normal processing time is 14 business days from receipt, but with current backlogs, it's taking 4-6 weeks minimum For the original poster: Send a message through Ask EDD explaining your situation and include your full name, last 4 of SSN, and date you mailed the application. They should at least be able to tell you if your application was received and entered into their system. Until it's in their system, there won't be anything to see in SDI Online.

•Thank you so much for this clear information. I'll definitely use Ask EDD today to see if they can at least confirm whether they received my application. I appreciate everyone's help!

I'm going through something similar right now - filed my disability claim by mail 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back. The phone situation is absolutely ridiculous! I've been following this thread and wanted to share what I just found out from my neighbor who works in healthcare billing. She told me that sometimes the mail processing center gets backed up and applications sit there for weeks before being entered into the system. That could explain why your claim doesn't show up online yet - it might still be sitting in a pile waiting to be processed. She also mentioned that if you have a case worker assigned to you through your doctor's office or medical provider, they sometimes have better luck getting through to EDD on behalf of patients. Might be worth asking if they can help make that call for you while you're also trying the Ask EDD message route that others suggested.

•That's really helpful info about the mail processing backlog! I hadn't thought about asking my doctor's office if they could help make the call. My doctor did submit the medical certification, so maybe their billing department has experience dealing with EDD/SDI. It's worth a shot since I'm running out of options. Thanks for sharing what your neighbor told you - it actually makes me feel a bit better knowing there might be a simple explanation for why my claim isn't showing up in the system yet.

I'm in a very similar situation - mailed my disability application 4 weeks ago and have been getting nowhere with the phone lines. Reading through all these responses has been really eye-opening! I had no idea that the physical EDD offices can't help with disability claims, and the explanation about mail applications needing to be manually entered before showing up online makes so much sense. I'm definitely going to try the Ask EDD message feature today, and I'll also check with my doctor's office to see if they can help call on my behalf. It's frustrating that we have to jump through so many hoops just to get basic information about our own claims, but at least now I have some concrete steps to try. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps to know we're not alone in this struggle!

•I'm in the exact same boat as you and the original poster! Filed by mail 4 weeks ago, can't get through on the phone, and my claim doesn't show up online either. This thread has been a lifesaver - I had no idea about the manual entry process or that EDD offices can't help with disability claims. I'm going to try the Ask EDD message route first thing Monday morning, and I'll definitely contact my assembly member's office if that doesn't work. It's so reassuring to know this is a common issue and not just something wrong with my specific application. Hopefully we'll all get some answers soon! Keep us posted on how the Ask EDD message works out for you.

I went through this exact same frustrating experience last year! After weeks of not being able to get through by phone, I found a few things that actually worked: 1. **Try the "2-1-1" trick**: When you call the main SDI number, press 2 for existing claims, then 1, then 1 again. Sometimes this bypasses the busiest queue. 2. **Call during lunch hours (12-1 PM)**: Counter-intuitive, but I had better luck during what you'd think would be busy times. 3. **Use the Ask EDD feature religiously**: I sent messages through their website every 3-4 days with updates on my situation. Eventually someone responded and escalated my case. 4. **Document EVERYTHING**: Keep a log of every call attempt, message sent, and interaction. This helped when I finally got through. The most important thing I learned is that mailed applications really do take 6-8 weeks to fully process, especially if there are any minor issues that need clarification. Your 5-week mark means you're getting close! Don't give up - the system is broken but your claim is probably just working its way through the backlog. Hang in there!

•Thank you so much for sharing the "2-1-1" trick! I've been calling the main number and just sitting in the general queue - didn't know there was a way to potentially bypass some of the wait. The lunch hour timing is interesting too, I would have never thought to try that. I'm definitely going to start documenting all my attempts like you suggested. It's encouraging to hear that 6-8 weeks is actually normal for mailed applications, even though it feels like forever when you're waiting. I'm at the 5-week mark now so hopefully I'll hear something soon. Really appreciate the practical tips!

I'm dealing with this exact same nightmare right now! Filed my disability claim by mail 6 weeks ago and it's like my application disappeared into a black hole. The phone system is absolutely broken - I've tried calling at different times of day, used redial apps, and even had family members try calling from their phones thinking maybe my number was somehow blocked. Nothing works! What's really getting to me is not knowing if there's an issue with my application or if it's just sitting in some processing queue. My doctor submitted all the medical forms right away and confirmed everything was complete on their end. But since I can't create an online account (it says no claim found), I have no way to check status or see if they need additional information. I'm going to try all the suggestions in this thread - the Ask EDD messages, contacting my assembly member, and that 2-1-1 phone trick someone mentioned. It's ridiculous that we need to become detectives just to get basic information about our own disability claims. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - at least now I know I'm not the only one going through this bureaucratic maze!

•I completely understand your frustration - the 6-week mark with no word is incredibly stressful, especially when you're dealing with a disability and need those benefits! I've been following this thread closely since I'm in a similar situation (though only at 4 weeks). One thing that stood out to me from all the advice here is that multiple people mentioned contacting their assembly member's office as being really effective. @Jay Lincoln said it worked in just 3 days after being stuck for weeks! That might be your best bet at this point since you ve'already tried everything else. Also, when you do the Ask EDD messages, try to be very specific about your timeline and mention that you re'at 6 weeks with no communication - that might help escalate your case. Hang in there, and please update us when you get some answers!

I'm reading through all these responses and feeling both relieved and frustrated - relieved that I'm not alone in this mess, but frustrated that so many of us are stuck in the same broken system! I just wanted to add my experience since I finally got some movement on my claim after 7 weeks of hell. What worked for me was a combination of things: I sent Ask EDD messages every few days (being polite but persistent), called using the 2-1-1 trick during off-peak hours, AND contacted my state assembly member's office. The assembly member's office was the game-changer - they have a dedicated EDD liaison who could actually see what was happening with my claim. Turns out my application WAS in the system, but there was a coding error that prevented it from showing up in SDI Online. The liaison got it fixed within 48 hours, and I received my first payment a week later. For anyone still struggling: don't give up on the assembly member route. Find your representative online and call their local office (not the DC office). Tell them you're a constituent dealing with an EDD disability claim issue and ask to speak with their EDD liaison. They deal with these problems all the time and actually have the power to cut through the red tape. The system is absolutely broken, but there are people who can help if you know where to look. Hang in there everyone!

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you for sharing your success story! I'm currently at week 5 and have been feeling pretty hopeless about the whole situation. Your experience gives me hope that there might actually be a solution. I had no idea that assembly members had dedicated EDD liaisons - that's exactly the kind of insider information we need! I'm definitely going to look up my representative today and give their office a call. The fact that they could see a coding error that was preventing your claim from showing up online is both reassuring (there might be a simple fix) and infuriating (how many of us are stuck because of technical glitches like this?). Thanks for taking the time to share the specifics of what worked - it really helps to have a concrete action plan rather than just general advice. Crossing my fingers that I'll have a similar breakthrough soon!

I'm going through the exact same situation right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I mailed my disability application 5 weeks ago and have been stuck in phone hell ever since. After reading all these responses, I feel like I finally have a roadmap of what to do next. A few things that really stood out to me: - The explanation that mailed applications need to be manually entered before showing up online makes SO much sense - The assembly member liaison option sounds like the most promising solution based on everyone's experiences - The Ask EDD messaging feature seems to be more reliable than the phone system I'm going to start with sending detailed messages through Ask EDD today, then contact my assembly member's office if I don't get a response within a few days. It's frustrating that we have to become advocates for ourselves just to get basic information, but at least now I know there are actual people who can help cut through the bureaucracy. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions - knowing that others have successfully navigated this broken system gives me hope that I'll eventually get answers too. I'll update this thread when I make progress in case it helps others in the same boat!
