For SDI certification, you have two options: 1. Online certification through SDI Online (most convenient) 2. Paper forms (DE 2500A) that are mailed to you I recommend setting up the online option if possible. It's much faster and you don't have to worry about mail delays. Regarding your earlier question about processing times - if you're facing an urgent financial situation while waiting for your SDI claim to process, you might qualify for an expedited payment. You would need to contact EDD directly and explain your hardship situation. This is another reason why getting through to an actual representative can be so important.
Online is WAY better! My paper forms got lost in the mail twice and it delayed my payments by over 3 weeks. The postal service in my area is terrible though lol
I'm so sorry you're dealing with this on top of your injuries! I went through something similar after a workplace injury last year. Here's what I wish someone had told me upfront: **Immediate steps:** 1. DO NOT certify for any UI weeks where you were unable to work due to your injuries - this is crucial 2. File your SDI claim ASAP through SDI Online (edd.ca.gov) 3. Get your doctor to complete the medical certification within 30 days **Important timing detail:** Since your accident was 3 days after filing UI, make sure you're crystal clear about the exact date your disability began when filling out the SDI application. This will help avoid any confusion. **Money-saving tip:** While waiting for SDI to process, check if you qualify for emergency medical coverage through Covered California or Medi-Cal due to your income change. Medical bills from car accidents add up fast. One last thing - if the other driver was at fault, their insurance should be covering your medical expenses and lost wages. Don't let SDI be your only option if someone else caused this mess. You might be entitled to much more than what SDI provides. Hope you heal up quickly! This community has your back. 💪
This is such comprehensive advice, thank you @Mei Chen! I really appreciate you mentioning the emergency medical coverage - I hadn't even thought about that but you're absolutely right that the medical bills are going to be huge. I'm definitely going to look into Covered California options while I wait for everything to process. And yes, the other driver was cited at the scene, so I should probably talk to a personal injury attorney too. It's overwhelming trying to handle all of this while dealing with concussion symptoms, but this community has been incredibly helpful. Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed response!
Good news - I just checked the EDD website and they're reporting a system update that was completed Monday night. This sometimes causes a 24-hour delay in payment processing to the Bank of America system. Your payment should appear by tomorrow morning based on their current notice. This happens about once every quarter when they update their systems.
THANK YOU for checking! That's such a relief to hear there's an actual explanation. I'll stop refreshing my balance every 5 minutes now 😅 Really appreciate everyone's help and advice!
@Liam O'Reilly glad this helped! I've been through this exact same panic before with rent due. For future reference, if you ever need your payment urgently, you can sometimes get them to expedite it by calling and explaining you have essential bills due - though it doesn't always work. The system updates usually happen monthly so it's good to keep an eye on their notices.
I've been dealing with similar delays lately and found that logging into the Bank of America EDD website (not just checking the card balance) sometimes shows pending deposits that aren't visible through other methods. You can see if your payment is in "pending" status there, which would confirm it's on its way. Also, if you're really in a bind with rent, some landlords will accept a screenshot of the "paid" status from the EDD portal as proof that payment is coming - might be worth asking yours if that would buy you a couple extra days while the system catches up.
LOL yeah right. I'll believe it when I see it. 🙄
I've had luck calling exactly at 8:00 AM when they open - literally have your finger ready to hit redial at 7:59:59. Also try calling on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, seems like Mondays and Fridays are swamped. If you get the automated system, don't hang up right away - sometimes if you stay on the line for a few minutes it'll transfer you to hold for a real person. The wait can be brutal (I've waited 3+ hours before) but at least you're in the queue. Good luck, @Amelia Martinez - I know how stressful this can be when you need help ASAP! 🤞
This is such helpful advice! I never thought about the timing aspect - definitely going to try the Tuesday/Wednesday strategy. The 8 AM sharp tip makes total sense too. Thanks for sharing what actually worked for you @Harold Oh! It's so frustrating when you're dealing with something urgent and can't get through to anyone.
One other thing - if you have health insurance through your former employer, switching to SDI won't affect your COBRA eligibility or timeline. That was something I was worried about when I went through this. Your right to continue health coverage is separate from which benefit program you're on.
Thank you! I hadn't even thought about how this might affect my health insurance. I'm currently on COBRA, so it's good to know that won't change.
I went through this transition about 2 years ago and want to emphasize something important - keep detailed records of everything! Save screenshots of your last UI certification, your SDI application submission confirmation, and any correspondence from EDD. I also recommend taking a photo of the medical form your doctor completes before they submit it electronically. Having this documentation saved me when there was a discrepancy in my file months later. The transition itself is straightforward like everyone said (just stop UI when SDI starts), but having proof of dates and what was submitted gives you peace of mind. Also, don't panic if your first SDI payment seems delayed - mine took about 2-3 weeks to arrive even though I did everything correctly. Good luck with your pregnancy and the benefit transition!

I'm telling you, the trick is to call at exactly 8:01 am. Not 8:00, not 8:02. 8:01 on the dot. It's like playing the unemployment lottery 🎰

•It's crazy how precise timing can sometimes be the key to getting through. Worth a try, though results may vary!

I went through something similar last year - it's absolutely maddening! One thing that helped me was checking if there were any "stop payment" indicators on my account. Sometimes there are hidden flags that prevent payments even when everything looks approved. Also, try logging into your UI Online account at different times of day - I noticed some info only showed up during off-peak hours when their system wasn't overloaded. The waiting game is brutal, but don't give up! 💪

•That's really helpful advice about checking for stop payment indicators! I never would have thought to look for hidden flags. How do you actually find those in the UI Online system? Is it under a specific section or do you just have to dig around?
