Pro tip: check if your employer has any resources to help with PFL claims. Some companies have HR staff who can assist or provide guidance.
Hey Andre! I went through something similar a few months ago - filed for the wrong benefit type and it was a nightmare to sort out. Here's what worked for me: I ended up having to withdraw my original claim completely and refile the correct one. You can do this through the online portal under "manage claims" but you'll need to call to confirm the withdrawal went through. Also, make sure you have all your documents ready for the new claim - medical records, employer info, etc. The whole process added about 2-3 weeks to my timeline but at least I got the right benefits in the end. Don't lose hope, it's fixable! 💪
This is exactly what I needed to hear! I was so worried I'd have to start completely over. Going to check out that manage claims section right now. Really appreciate you sharing the step-by-step process - it makes this whole mess feel way more manageable. Fingers crossed the withdrawal and refile goes smoothly! 🤞
Oh wow, this is incredibly helpful! I had no idea you could withdraw and refile through the online portal. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out. Quick question - when you withdrew your original claim, did it affect your eligibility window at all? I'm worried about missing some kind of deadline while I sort this mess out. Also, did you have to explain the mistake when you refiled, or did the system just treat it as a fresh application? Thanks so much for giving me a real path forward here! 🙏
Just wanted to add my experience as someone new to this community - I've been lurking here for a few days while dealing with my own EDD disability claim issues. This thread has been incredibly helpful! I tried the Spanish queue trick this morning after reading Logan's success story, and while I didn't get through today (still got disconnected after 40 minutes on hold), the fact that I actually made it to a hold queue gives me hope that this approach works better than what I was doing before. For anyone else trying this method, make sure you have your claim number and all relevant info ready because when you do get through, you want to make the most of that call. I'm going to keep trying with the 8am Spanish queue approach. Thanks to everyone who shared their strategies - it's amazing how this community has figured out workarounds that EDD should just tell people about directly!
That's still progress - making it to a hold queue is way better than getting immediately disconnected! I'm also new here and have been amazed by how helpful everyone is with sharing these strategies. The fact that you got 40 minutes into the hold queue using the Spanish method shows it's definitely working better than the regular approach. Keep at it - based on everyone's experiences here, persistence with the right technique seems to be the key. I'm planning to try the same approach for my claim that's been stuck since early March. Thanks for sharing your attempt, and good luck getting through tomorrow!
As a newcomer to this community, I just want to say how incredibly helpful this entire thread has been! I'm currently dealing with my first SDI claim that's been stuck in pending status, and I was completely lost on how to actually reach someone at EDD until I found this discussion. Reading through Logan's journey from complete frustration to success using the Spanish queue trick at 8am is exactly the kind of real-world guidance I needed. It's honestly shocking that we have to develop these elaborate strategies just to access basic information about our own benefits, but I'm so grateful everyone here shares what actually works. I'm definitely going to try the Spanish queue approach combined with the early morning timing tomorrow. The fact that multiple people have had success with this method gives me hope after my own failed attempts this week. Thank you everyone for creating such a supportive community where we can share these workarounds - it makes dealing with EDD's broken system so much less isolating!
I'm new to this community and currently going through my first SDI claim experience. Filed about 6 days ago and my doctor submitted the medical certification 3 days ago, so I'm still early in the process but already feeling anxious reading about everyone's longer wait times! It's really eye-opening to see that the reality is 2-4 weeks instead of the 14 days they advertise. I'm trying to stay patient but it's tough when you're dealing with a medical condition and worried about finances. Has anyone noticed if certain types of conditions or diagnoses get processed faster than others, or is it pretty much just luck of the draw with the workload? Thanks for all the helpful information in this thread - it's making me feel less alone in this stressful process!
Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new here and going through my first SDI claim too. From what I've been reading in this thread and other posts, it seems like processing times are pretty much the same regardless of the type of condition - it's more about their current workload and staffing issues than anything specific to your diagnosis. The 2-4 week reality vs the 14 day promise is definitely frustrating when you're already stressed about health and money. At least we're all in this together and can support each other through the wait! Hopefully both of our claims move along smoothly once they get to them.
I'm also new here and dealing with my first SDI claim! Filed mine about 5 days ago and my doctor just submitted the medical certification yesterday, so I'm right at the beginning of what sounds like a long wait based on everyone's experiences. It's honestly both helpful and stressful reading through all these timelines - on one hand it's good to know what to expect, but on the other hand realizing it could be a month or more is pretty overwhelming when you're already dealing with health issues and financial stress. I've been checking the portal obsessively every day even though I know it's way too early for any updates. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and tips - it really helps to know there's a community going through the same thing. I'll definitely try the 8 AM calling strategy once I get closer to the 2-week mark!
Welcome to the community! I'm also brand new here and just started my SDI journey too. It's definitely overwhelming reading about these extended wait times when you're already stressed about health and finances. I filed my claim last week and have been obsessively checking the portal as well - it's hard not to when you're anxious about the outcome! The reality check about 2-4 weeks vs the advertised 14 days is tough to swallow, but at least we're all supporting each other through this process. Thanks for sharing your timeline - it helps to know there are others at similar stages. Here's hoping all of us newer claimants get some good news sooner rather than later!
Does anyone know if gig work counts towards SDI calculations? I do some freelancing on the side and I'm not sure if that's included.
Thanks for posting this question! I'm in a similar situation and this thread has been super informative. One thing I'd add is that the base period they use for calculating your benefits is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your claim starts. So if you file in February 2025, they'd look at earnings from October 2023 through September 2024. Also, make sure all your employers have been properly reporting your wages to EDD - I had an issue where one of my part-time jobs wasn't showing up and I had to provide pay stubs to get it corrected.
This is really helpful info about the base period calculation! That's exactly the kind of detail that's hard to find elsewhere. Quick question - when you had to provide pay stubs for the missing employer, how long did it take EDD to update your records and recalculate your benefits? I'm worried I might have a similar issue with one of my previous jobs.
Great breakdown on the base period! That calendar quarter explanation really clarifies things. I'm curious though - if someone had a significant pay increase or decrease during that base period, does EDD weight the more recent quarters more heavily, or do they just average everything out equally across all four quarters?

Hey Sofia! I went through the exact same thing about 6 months ago - payment was 4 days late and I was panicking. Turns out EDD was doing some backend maintenance that wasn't announced anywhere. The payment showed up eventually, but the stress was real! One thing that helped me was logging into the EDD portal and checking if there were any pending issues or flags on my account. Sometimes they'll put a hold if they need additional documentation or if there's a discrepancy they're reviewing. Also, if you have direct deposit, double-check that your banking info is still correct in your profile. I know someone whose payment got delayed because their bank changed routing numbers and they didn't update it. Sending you good vibes that it gets sorted out soon! The waiting is the worst part. 💙

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I just checked my EDD portal again and didn't see any flags or pending issues, which is good I guess? My banking info looks correct too. The backend maintenance thing makes sense - typical that they wouldn't announce it! 🤦♀️ Really hoping it shows up in the next day or two. The stress is eating me alive!

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this stress! I had a similar scare a few months back where my payment was 5 days late. It turned out that EDD had flagged my account for a routine review - nothing wrong on my end, just their random audit process. The scary part was that there was NO notification about it anywhere in my online account. What finally helped was when I managed to get through on the phone (took like 30 tries over 2 days), the rep told me that sometimes payments get held up in their fraud prevention system and they have to manually release them. Super annoying but it happens more often than they admit. Have you tried logging in at different times of day? Sometimes their system shows different info depending on when you check. I know it sounds weird but I swear the portal was showing different status messages when I logged in at night vs morning. Also, if you're really stuck and can't get through by phone, try reaching out to your local state assembly member's office. They have caseworkers who can contact EDD directly on your behalf. It's free and they're usually pretty responsive. I had to do this once for a friend and they got results within 48 hours. Hang in there - the money will come through! The system is frustrating but they don't just lose payments. 🤞
