I'm really glad to see you got your claim submitted and your doctor was quick with the paperwork - that's huge! One thing I learned during my SDI experience is to keep a written log of any symptoms or limitations that might change during your recovery period. If your condition gets worse or you need to extend your disability beyond the initial 3 months your doctor estimated, having detailed notes about your daily struggles can really help when it's time for re-evaluation. Also, don't feel guilty about taking the full recovery time your doctor recommends - I made the mistake of trying to go back to work too early and ended up extending my disability even longer. Focus on healing and let the system work for you. You've been through enough stress already with the accident and the EDD runaround!
This is excellent advice about keeping a symptom log! I hadn't thought about documenting my daily limitations, but that makes so much sense for potential extensions. I'm definitely dealing with daily headaches and fatigue that vary in intensity, plus the mobility issues from my back injury. I'll start tracking everything now - pain levels, what activities I can/can't do, sleep quality, etc. And you're absolutely right about not rushing back to work. My doctor was pretty clear that head injuries need proper healing time, and I don't want to risk making things worse by pushing myself too hard. It's hard to not feel guilty about being out of work, but I need to remember this wasn't my choice - it was a serious accident that requires real recovery time. Thanks for the reminder to be patient with myself! 💙
I'm so sorry you're going through this difficult situation with your accident and the EDD process! I went through something similar when I had to transition from UI to SDI after a motorcycle accident last year. One thing that really helped me was preparing a "disability packet" before calling EDD - I gathered my claim confirmation numbers, doctor's contact info, injury date, and a clear timeline of events. This made the conversation much smoother when I finally got through to a representative. Also, if you're worried about rent while waiting for approval, some local churches and community organizations have emergency assistance programs for people dealing with temporary disability situations. I found a small grant that helped cover utilities while I waited for my first SDI payment. The stress of worrying about finances definitely doesn't help with recovery, so don't hesitate to look into temporary assistance options in your area. You're handling this really well considering everything you're dealing with - stay strong! 💪
This is such thoughtful advice about creating a "disability packet" before calling! I wish I had done that from the start - it would have saved me so much fumbling around during my call with the EDD rep. I'm definitely going to put together all those documents you mentioned for any future calls I need to make. And thank you for mentioning the emergency assistance programs! I honestly hadn't thought to look into local resources like that. My pride was getting in the way, but you're right that the financial stress is really impacting my ability to focus on healing. I'm going to research what's available in my area this week. It's amazing how much practical advice this community has provided - I went from feeling completely lost to having a clear action plan. Really grateful for everyone sharing their experiences! 🙏
Has anyone tried going to the EDD office in person? I'm thinking about just showing up there since I can't get through on the phone.
I just went through the reopening process last month! Here's what worked for me: I called at exactly 8:00 AM when they opened and got through after about 2 hours of redials. The key is having everything ready - your Social Security number, last employer info, and the specific reason you're reopening (job loss, reduced hours, etc.). The agent asked me about my work search activities and any income I've had since my last claim. The whole process took about 20 minutes once I got connected, and my benefits were restored within 3 business days. Don't give up - it's frustrating but totally doable! 💪
idk if this helps, but I heard they're super backlogged bc of all the fraud cases they're dealing with. Doesn't make the wait any easier tho 😕
I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! Sent my SDI documents about 5 weeks ago and haven't heard a peep from EDD. It's so stressful not knowing if they even received everything. I've been checking my online account obsessively but there's no update. Has anyone had success with sending documents multiple times through different methods? I'm starting to wonder if I should resend everything via certified mail just to be safe. This whole process is so nerve-wracking when you really need the benefits to come through.
One important detail to add - if you're on SDI for a work-related injury and receiving Workers' Compensation at the same time, the tax treatment can be different. Workers' Comp is generally NOT taxable federally or state. If you're receiving both types of benefits, make sure you understand which portions are taxable. This gets complicated, so I definitely recommend working with a tax professional in that situation.
My situation this year is even more fun... I was on SDI for 3 months, then transitioned to PFL for bonding with my new baby. So I'll be getting TWO different tax forms? Anyone know how that works?

So glad to hear your payment came through @Dmitry! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - doctor submitted updated medical info for my knee surgery recovery on Tuesday and still waiting. This thread has been incredibly helpful in managing my expectations. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't communicate these processing delays clearly, but at least we have this community to share real experiences. The 3-5 business day timeline for medical updates seems to be the new normal unfortunately.

•Hey Leo! Tuesday to now would put you at about 3 business days, so you're right in that expected timeframe. Knee surgery recovery claims usually go pretty smoothly once they get the updated info processed. Have you checked your SDI inbox for any messages? Sometimes they send updates there before the payment actually hits. Fingers crossed yours comes through tomorrow!

•@Leo I'm in a similar boat with my workers comp to SDI transition - submitted new medical certification on Wednesday and still waiting. It's reassuring to see others experiencing the same delays and that payments do eventually come through. The uncertainty is definitely the hardest part, especially when you're counting on that money for bills. Hope both of us see our payments hit soon!

This whole thread has been so helpful to read through! I'm currently waiting on a payment after my doctor submitted updated info for my anxiety/depression claim on Wednesday, so seeing everyone's timelines gives me hope. The 3-5 business day window seems consistent across different types of claims. One thing I learned from calling EDD last week (took 2 hours on hold) is that they prioritize processing based on how close you are to running out of benefits. So if you're early in your claim period, you might wait the full 5 days, but if you're near the end of your benefit period, they expedite it. Just wanted to share that info in case it helps anyone else manage their expectations!

•That's really valuable information about the prioritization system! I had no idea they expedite processing based on benefit period timing. That actually explains why some people get payments faster than others even with the same type of claim. Thanks for sharing what you learned from that long hold time - those insights from actual EDD staff are gold. Hope your anxiety/depression claim payment comes through soon. Mental health claims can be especially stressful when you're already dealing with the condition itself.

•Wow, that prioritization system explains so much! I was wondering why my friend got her payment in 2 days while mine took 4 - she was on week 10 of her claim while I was only on week 3. Mental health claims can definitely be extra challenging when you're already stressed about finances on top of managing your condition. Have you found the EDD portal shows any status updates before the actual payment hits, or does it just appear without warning?
