How to report getting rehired part-time at old job for CalWORKs? Don't have paystub yet

So I just had my CalWORKs interview last week and they approved me pending verification that I'm not working at my old job (Walmart). The worker said I need to bring proof that I don't work there anymore. But here's my situation - I actually just got rehired at Walmart two days ago, but only part-time (20 hrs/week) instead of the full-time I had before!I haven't even started working yet (start next Monday) so I don't have a paystub to show my new income. My question is how do I report this to CalWORKs? Do I just wait until I get my first paycheck in 3 weeks? Will they deny my application completely when they find out I'm working again? I'm still going to have way less income than before and really need the cash aid for my kids. Anyone know the right way to handle this?

You need to report this change IMMEDIATELY - don't wait for the paystub. Call your worker today and tell them you've been rehired part-time. They'll probably ask you to submit a verification form that your employer needs to fill out showing your expected hours and pay rate.If you wait until you get a paystub, they could consider this an unreported change and possibly charge you with an overpayment later, or worse, claim you committed fraud. They can verify your employment with Walmart directly anyway through their systems. You should still qualify for some Cash Aid since you're only working part-time, but the amount will be reduced based on your income. The first $225 of earned income is disregarded, then 50% of the remainder is exempt, so you'll still get something if your income is low enough.

Omg thank you!! I had no idea they could see I was rehired already. Im gonna call them tomorrow. Do u think they might still deny my case completely since technically I did work at Walmart before? The worker seemed really focused on me proving I DIDNT work there but now I kinda do again...just way less hours

the same thing happened to my sister!!! she lost her job got approved for calworks then got her job back the next month lol. she just brought her first paystub to her worker and they recalculated her benefits. They didnt make a big deal about it just reduced her cash aid a little bit. jsut make sure u tell them before they find out on there own

This is TERRIBLE advice! You cannot wait until you get a paystub - changes must be reported within 5 calendar days of when they happen according to CalWORKs regulations. The original poster needs to contact their worker IMMEDIATELY and report the new employment. Waiting for 3 weeks could result in a fraud referral and potential overpayment determination.

You need to report this within 5 days of being hired. Call your worker directly and tell them about the change in circumstance. The county should provide you with an \

Thank you for explaining the income disregard! I make $16.25/hr so that's about $1300 a month before taxes. My caseworker never explained how they calculate the benefit amount. Before I totally lost my hours I was working 38hrs/week and they said I made too much for any aid. This 20hr schedule is temporary until they

I had sooo much trouble getting through to my CalWORKs worker when I needed to report a change like this. Kept getting stuck in their automated phone system and it would disconnect me after 45+ minutes of waiting. SUPER frustrating!!! Finally I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in like 15 mins. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwESeriously saved me from getting in trouble for not reporting in time. Worth checking out if you can't get through to report your new job.

is that a legit service? seems sketchy to me. don't they need ur personal info?

It's totally legit! They just need your phone number so they can call you back when they get a worker on the line. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for 3 days to get through. The callback feature made it so I didn't have to sit on hold forever.

THEY DO THIS ON PURPOSE to try to deny you!!! The whole system is designed to make it as confusing as possible. I got caught in the same trap - they tell you to prove you DONT work somewhere which is already ridiculous, then when your situation changes they try to say you committed fraud!!!! They'll probably make you do a bunch of extra Welfare to Work hours now too since you're \

While I understand your frustration, this isn't accurate information. The system isn't designed to trap people - verification requirements are standard to prevent fraud. The 5-day reporting requirement is clearly explained in paperwork provided to all recipients. And Welfare to Work hours are reduced proportionally when someone is working part-time. OP's situation is actually common and can be resolved by promptly reporting the change.

There's actually a form specifically for this situation: the CW 9 (Employment Verification form). You need to call your worker ASAP and explain you've been rehired part-time. They'll send you the form and your employer needs to complete it with your expected work schedule, pay rate, and first pay date. Since your income will be significantly lower than before, you should still qualify for some Cash Aid. The most important thing is to report within 5 days of the change - which is when you accepted the job offer, not when you get your first paycheck. Also, this change might affect your Welfare to Work participation requirements. Since you're working 20 hours/week, you would only need to complete 12 additional hours of WTW activities (if you have a child under 6) or 10 additional hours (if your youngest is 6+) to meet the 32 or 30 hour requirement.Report this ASAP so they don't process your application under incorrect information!

Thank you!! I just called and left a message for my worker. I didn't know about the CW 9 form so I'll ask specifically for that. I have a 4-year-old so sounds like I'll still need to do some WTW hours, but that's fine as long as I can get some help with cash aid. Fingers crossed they don't just deny my whole case now!

oh i forgot to say make sure u ask for childcare assistance too since ur working part time! calworks can pay for it while ur working those 20 hrs

Great point! OP, make sure to ask about CalWORKs Childcare. Since you have a 4-year-old and you're working, you qualify for subsidized childcare. They'll cover your childcare costs during your working hours AND during any Welfare to Work activities you need to complete. Just make sure to use a licensed provider or a TrustLine registered provider if using family/friend care.
