How soon do I need to report new job to CalWORKs while on probation period?

Hey everyone, I just managed to get a job after trying for months (retail, nothing fancy). The thing is, I'm on a 90-day probation period and honestly don't know if I'll make it through since they're super picky. Do I have to report this job to CalWORKs right away or can I wait until my probation is over? I'm worried about losing my Cash Aid when this job might not even last. Also, if I report late, will they make me pay back my benefits for the weeks I was working? This is my first job since getting on CalWORKs so I'm totally confused about the reporting rules. Thanks for any help!

You need to report your new job income within 10 days of getting your first paycheck. This is part of the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) rules. Don't wait until your probation period is over - that's way too long and could get you in trouble for unreported income. Even if the job might not be permanent, you still have to report it. Keep your paystubs to submit as verification.

10 days from first paycheck? Ok that's helpful. I was thinking it was from hire date. So once I get my first check I report within 10 days... Do they immediately cut the cash aid or do they adjust it based on what im making?

u def need 2 report asap or theyll hit u with an overpayment & might even accuse u of fraud!! i waited like 3 weeks once cuz i was on 30 day probation too & my worker freaked out on me sayin i could get kicked off & have to repay EVERYTHING. not worth the stress just tell them right away

This happened to me too! I didn't report for almost a month thinking they wouldn't care about my little part-time gig, and they came after me for the whole amount plus some penalty. Definitely not worth risking it!

The exact reporting requirement is that you must report within 10 calendar days when your total monthly income exceeds your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT). Your IRT amount should be listed on your last SAR 7 or approval notice. Some workers will tell you to report any job immediately, but technically you only have to report when you go over that IRT amount. However, here's what happens with earnings: They don't immediately cut your cash aid. CalWORKs has an earned income disregard - the first $225 of earnings doesn't count against your grant, and then only 50% of earnings above that amount are counted. So you can work and still get partial benefits depending on how much you earn. Also, if they determine you deliberately didn't report income to get more benefits, that's when they might pursue fraud charges. An honest mistake usually just results in an overpayment that you'll need to pay back.

Thank you, this is super helpful! I'm going to check my paperwork tonight to find my IRT amount. I didn't even know about the income disregard - that's really good to know. I'm just trying to do this right and not mess anything up.

Next time try using Claimyr to get through to your worker. I was in the same situation - couldn't reach anyone for days. With claimyr.com they called the county for me and got me connected to a real person in minutes. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Saved me so much time and stress when I needed to report my new income!

ALWAYS REPORT RIGHT AWAY!!!! I didn't report for 2 months cuz I was only getting like 20 hrs a week at minimum wage and thought it wouldn't matter. BIG MISTAKE!!! They found out through EDD income reporting (yes they check!!!) and hit me with a $1,250 overpayment plus I got a 6 month penalty period where I couldn't get CalWORKs even tho I lost that job!!! Don't risk it!!!!!

Wow that sounds awful! I definitely don't want to deal with that kind of penalty. I'm gonna report as soon as I get my first check. Thanks for the warning!

Just to add some clarification on the reporting rules: 1. You must report new employment within 10 days of getting your first paycheck. 2. If your income exceeds your IRT (Income Reporting Threshold), you must report within 10 days. 3. Otherwise, you must report all income on your Semi-Annual Report (SAR 7). And about paybacks - yes, if you delay reporting and receive benefits you weren't eligible for, you'll have to repay the overpayment. However, as someone mentioned, CalWORKs has an earned income disregard, so you might still be eligible for partial benefits even with your new job.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'm definitely going to report within 10 days of getting my first paycheck. I found my IRT letter and it says $1,790 for my household, which is more than I'll make at this part-time job. I'll make copies of my paystubs and upload them to BenefitsCal right away. Really appreciate all the help - definitely don't want to deal with overpayments or fraud accusations!

That's a good plan. Make sure to also ask your worker about the Welfare to Work (WTW) requirements now that you're employed. Depending on your hours, your job might fulfill your WTW participation requirements, or you might need additional activities to meet your hours. Also, don't forget you can get help with transportation costs for work and childcare assistance if you need it!
