How much will my CalWORKs Cash Aid decrease when WTW exemption ends but childcare isn't feasible?

My Welfare to Work exemption expires next month and I'm stressing about what happens next. My 3 year old son is in the middle of potty training, and it's been a real struggle. I don't feel comfortable putting him in daycare until we get this under control - he has accidents almost daily and gets really upset when it happens. I've explained this to my caseworker but she just keeps saying I need to meet my WTW requirements or my benefits will be cut. I'm a single mom in San Bernardino County with just this one child. Can anyone tell me exactly how much they'll reduce my Cash Aid if I can't meet the WTW hours right away? I'm trying to budget for next month and figure out if I can make it work for another month or two until my son is fully potty trained. Do they cut a percentage or a fixed amount? Thanks for any help.

They'll reduce it by a LOT if u don't comply with welfare 2 work. My sister got her grant cut by like half when she missed her appointment thingy. I think they can even cut u off completely if u keep not following the rules for a long time. Maybe ask if there's some kinda special childcare they could help u find for kids that aren't fully potty trained??

Half?! Omg that would be devastating. I can barely make rent with the full amount. I'll definitely ask about special childcare options, didn't even think about that.

They implement what's called a 'financial sanction' if you don't comply with WTW requirements without good cause. In San Bernardino, they would remove your portion of the grant but continue to provide aid for your child. So if your current grant is for you and one child, they would reduce it by approximately 1/3 (the adult portion). Before you let this happen though, have you talked to your worker about getting a temporary good cause exemption specifically for the potty training issue? If you can get documentation from your child's doctor about the potty training struggles, you might qualify for a short extension on your exemption. Another option is to meet your WTW requirements through activities you can do from home while continuing to work on potty training.

Thank you so much for explaining! Losing 1/3 would be tough but at least not as bad as I feared. I didn't know a doctor's note might help with this situation. His pediatrician did actually mention that some kids just take longer to get the hang of it. I'll call on Monday to see if they can provide some documentation.

have u tried the online self learning activities for your wtw hours? when my kid was having similar problems, my worker set me up with some parenting classes and other online stuff i could do at home to meet my participation requirements. that way i could still work on potty training and didnt lose any $$. just an idea.

No I haven't! That sounds perfect for my situation. Did you have to specifically ask for those or did your worker suggest them?

I went through something similar with my daughter last year. The financial sanction in San Bernardino County works exactly as someone already mentioned - they remove the adult portion (your portion) which is roughly 1/3 of the total grant. BUT before you let that happen, I'd recommend: 1. Request a temporary good cause exemption specifically for this issue 2. Ask about the CalWORKs Family Stabilization Program - it's designed for situations like yours where there's a temporary barrier to participation 3. See if you can qualify for home-based WTW activities 4. Consider in-home childcare options through the CalWORKs childcare program (they do have providers who work with children still potty training) Don't just accept the sanction without exploring these options first!

Thank you for all these suggestions! I've never heard of the Family Stabilization Program before. Going to write all these down before calling my worker tomorrow.

OMG the county workers never tell you about all your options!!! I spent HOURS trying to reach my worker about a similar issue last year. Keep calling and demanding to speak to a supervisor if needed. The system is designed to make you give up.

You're so right! I had to call for three days straight before finally getting through to someone who could actually help me with my WTW plan. It's frustrating how difficult they make it to reach anyone.

Hey, I know how frustrating it can be to try reaching someone at the county office. When I was dealing with my WTW exemption ending, I spent days trying to get through. I eventually used this service called Claimyr that connected me directly to a real person at the San Bernardino DPSS office in about 15 minutes. Saved me hours of waiting and redialing. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Definitely worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive issues like potential benefit reductions.

Thank you! I've been calling all morning with no luck... will definitely check this out. Anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours with a toddler running around!

To answer your specific question about the exact amount: If you're receiving the maximum grant amount for a family of 2 in San Bernardino (which is currently around $925), the adult portion would be approximately $308. So you'd be left with about $617 for your child's portion if sanctioned. But as others have mentioned, you have several options to avoid the sanction. The Family Stabilization Program can be especially helpful for situations like yours.

This is EXACTLY what I needed to know for planning purposes. Thank you for the specific numbers. I'm going to try everything I can to avoid the sanction, but at least now I know what I'm facing worst case scenario.

my cousin had this EXACT problem!!!! her son was having potty training issues too and she got a note from the doctor saying he had some kind of developmental delay with toilet training (i forget the fancy name they used) and they gave her an extension on her exemption for like 3 more months! worth asking about

thats what my sister did too! they called it something like 'elimination delay' or something. some kids just take longer and doctors know this stuff happens.

After reading through all the responses, I wanted to add a few more details that might help: 1. The specific program I mentioned earlier is called the "Family Stabilization Program" (FSP). It's part of CalWORKs and specifically designed to help families overcome temporary barriers to WTW participation. 2. For your situation, you'd request an FSP assessment specifically mentioning your child's potty training challenges as a temporary barrier to childcare placement. 3. The reduction amount others mentioned is correct - you'd lose approximately 1/3 of your grant during a sanction period. 4. If you do end up getting sanctioned, know that you can cure the sanction at any point by agreeing to comply with WTW requirements, and your full benefits would be restored the following month. 5. Document EVERYTHING - keep records of all your calls, who you spoke with, and what was discussed.

Thank you for such detailed information! I'm calling first thing Monday morning to ask specifically about the Family Stabilization Program assessment. I really appreciate everyone's help with this.
