How long do CalWORKs pending benefits take to be approved for next month?

Been checking my BenefitsCal account everyday for the past 2 weeks and my CalWORKs benefits for April are still showing as 'pending'. I submitted all my verification docs when they requested them last month (pay stubs, rent receipt, etc). My worker usually processes everything pretty quick but this time it's taking forever. I've called the county office like 5 times but keep getting the automated system and can't get through to a real person. Bills coming due soon and I'm getting nervous. Is it normal for benefits to stay pending this long? Anyone know how long before I should expect to hear something or what I should do?

It depends on what type of pending you're talking about. If you just submitted your SAR7 or recertification, they have 30 days to process it. If it's just a regular month but something triggered a review, they should still be processing within 10 business days. Have you checked if you have any Tasks or Required Actions in your BenefitsCal account? Sometimes they need additional verification but the notice gets lost in the mail.

Thanks for responding. I looked at my Tasks and there's nothing there. It's just a regular month, not recertification time yet. Just says 'pending review' for April benefits. Is this normal? Should I wait longer or keep trying to call?

If your benefits are showing as pending but there are no required actions needed, it usually means your case is in the worker's queue waiting to be processed. April benefits should be available by the first of the month based on your case number (if your case number ends in 1-3, you get benefits on the 1st, 4-7 on the 2nd, and 8-0 on the 3rd). If you can't get through on the phone, you can try messaging your worker directly through BenefitsCal. Look under the Messages tab. You can also try going in person to your local office. Sometimes that's actually faster than waiting on the phone.

My case number ends in 5 so I should get it on the 2nd. I tried messaging through BenefitsCal but no response. I guess going to the office might be my only option, but it's so far from where I live and with gas prices being so high... 😔

Have you reported any changes recently? I had a similar issue when I reported a small change in my work hours. My benefits stayed pending for like 3 weeks because they needed to recalculate everything. You'd think they would at least tell us what's going on instead of leaving us in the dark!!! BTW - check if you went over your IRT (Income Reporting Threshold). If your income went above that amount even by a little bit, that could be why they're reviewing your case more carefully.

No changes at all, that's why I'm confused. My income is the same, household is the same, everything. No idea why they're taking so long this time.

I had this EXACT problem last month and was literally going crazy trying to get through to someone at CalWORKs. After getting disconnected like 8 times, I tried using Claimyr.com and it actually worked to get me connected to a real person. They have this system where they wait on hold for you and call you back when they reach a worker. Saved me hours of frustration. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE When I finally got through, turned out there was a glitch in their system and my case was stuck in pending status. The worker fixed it right away once I actually talked to someone. Might be worth trying instead of driving all the way to the office.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out. At this point I'm desperate enough to try anything. Just need to know if my benefits are coming through or not.

Just wondering - have you checked your mail carefully? Sometimes they send you a Notice of Action that explains why there's a delay or if they need additional information. These notices can look like junk mail sometimes and it's easy to miss them. If you do manage to get through to your worker, ask them to check if there are any pending NOAs (Notices of Action) on your case. Also make sure your contact information is up to date in the system.

Good point! I just went through all my mail from the last 3 weeks and don't see anything from them. But my mailbox isn't very secure so it's possible something got lost or taken. My phone number is definitely current in the system because I updated it recently when I got a new phone.

UPDATE!! Just called using that Claimyr service and finally got through to my worker! Turns out they flagged my case for review because my kid's father made a child support payment last month (first time in years 🙄) and they needed to verify it wasn't going to be ongoing income. Worker just approved my benefits now and said they'll be available on the 2nd like normal. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! Would have been nice if they'd actually told me this was happening instead of me having to chase them down.

That's great news! And now it makes sense - child support payments can trigger a review because they need to determine if it's a one-time payment or recurring income. Glad you got it resolved before the beginning of the month.

So glad you got it resolved! This is exactly why I hate how the system works - they can flag your case for review over something like a one-time child support payment but don't bother to tell you what's happening. We're just left wondering if our benefits are coming or not while bills pile up. At least now other people reading this will know that child support payments can cause delays. Thanks for updating us!

Wait, I'm confused - I thought this was Adriana's post but you're Axel? Did you mean to post this update on your own account? Either way, glad someone got their benefits sorted out! The child support thing triggering a review makes total sense now that you mention it.

0 coins

@Diego Flores You re'absolutely right to be confused! I think Axel might have posted this update by mistake - this was definitely Adriana s'original post. But hey, at least we got some useful info about child support payments causing reviews. Adriana, did you end up getting your benefits sorted out too?

@GalacticGladiator @Diego Flores Yeah that was weird - I think Axel accidentally posted on the wrong thread or something! But you re'right, still good info. I actually tried that Claimyr service too after seeing Axel s'post and FINALLY got through to my worker this morning. Turns out my case was just stuck in their processing queue for no real reason - worker said it happens sometimes when the system gets backed up. Got it approved and benefits should hit my EBT card tomorrow. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, especially @Kristian Bishop for mentioning Claimyr!

@Ava Thompson Wait, I m'so confused now! I m'Adriana - the original poster - and I never posted any update about getting it resolved. That Axel "Far update" wasn t'from me. But I m'glad to hear YOU got your benefits sorted out! I m'still waiting to hear back after trying Claimyr yesterday. Hopefully I ll'get through to someone soon. This whole thread is getting confusing with people posting updates that aren t'theirs 😅

This thread is getting really confusing with all these mixed up updates! But it's actually helpful to see that multiple people are having the same issue with pending benefits. Sounds like system backlogs and random reviews are pretty common. @Adriana Cohn hope you get through to your worker soon - definitely try that Claimyr service if regular calling isn t'working. The waiting and not knowing is the worst part!

This thread is definitely confusing with all the mixed up names and updates! But it's really helpful to see I'm not the only one dealing with this. I'm still waiting for my benefits to get approved - tried Claimyr yesterday like @Kristian Bishop suggested but haven t'heard back yet. It s'so stressful not knowing if the money will be there when bills are due. Really wish they had a better system to let us know what s'happening with our cases instead of just leaving us guessing. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences though - at least now I know this kind of delay isn t'totally unusual.

Wow, this thread got really confusing with all the mixed up updates and names! But it's actually really helpful to see that so many people are dealing with similar issues with pending benefits. It seems like system backlogs, random reviews, and communication problems are pretty common with CalWORKs. @Adriana Cohn I hope you were able to get through using Claimyr or another method - the stress of not knowing if your benefits will come through when bills are due is just awful. The system really needs better ways to communicate what s'happening with our cases instead of leaving us all in the dark!

This whole thread shows how broken the communication is with CalWORKs! So many of us dealing with the same "pending" status with zero explanation from our workers. It's ridiculous that we have to use third-party services like Claimyr just to reach someone who can tell us what's going on with our own benefits. The system should automatically notify us when cases are flagged for review or stuck in processing queues. We shouldn't have to play detective to figure out why our basic assistance is being delayed! Really hope @Adriana Cohn got their situation resolved - this kind of stress when you re'already struggling financially is just cruel.

I totally agree @Omar Farouk - the lack of communication from CalWORKs is seriously frustrating! I ve'been in similar situations where my benefits were pending for weeks with no explanation. It shouldn t'be this hard to find out what s'happening with our own cases. The fact that we have to rely on community forums like this and third-party services just to get basic information is pretty messed up. @Adriana Cohn if you re still'having trouble, you might also try calling first thing in the morning around 8 AM - I ve had'better luck getting through to someone then. The system definitely needs major improvements in how they communicate with us!

I'm dealing with something similar right now - my CalWORKs benefits have been pending for almost 3 weeks and I can't get any clear answers from my county office either. It's so frustrating when you're depending on these benefits and they just leave you hanging without any explanation. From what I've learned reading through other people's experiences, it seems like the system can get backed up pretty easily and cases get stuck in processing queues for various reasons - sometimes it's triggered by income changes, sometimes it's just random system glitches. Have you tried checking if there are any pending notices or required documents in your BenefitsCal account under the "Correspondence" section? Sometimes they send notices electronically that are easy to miss. The waiting is the absolute worst part when bills are piling up!

I'm so sorry you're going through this too @Leslie Parker! Three weeks is way too long to be left hanging without any explanation. I checked my Correspondence section like you suggested and there's nothing there either - it's like they expect us to be mind readers or something. The stress of not knowing if the money will be there when rent is due is just unreal. Have you had any luck with that Claimyr service people mentioned earlier in this thread? I'm thinking about trying it since regular calling hasn't worked at all. It's really helpful to know I'm not the only one dealing with this mess, even though I wouldn't wish this anxiety on anyone!

This is such a common problem and it's really frustrating how little transparency there is in the system! I went through something similar a few months ago where my benefits were stuck in "pending" status for over 2 weeks. What finally worked for me was going to the office in person early in the morning (like 7:30 AM before they officially open) and waiting in line. I know it's not ideal with gas costs and everything, but sometimes it's the only way to get face-to-face time with someone who can actually look at your case and tell you what's going on. When I did this, the worker found that my case had some kind of processing error that was preventing it from moving forward - took her literally 5 minutes to fix once she knew about it. The phone system is just broken honestly. If you can't make it to the office, definitely try that Claimyr service people mentioned - I've heard good things about it from other folks in similar situations. Hang in there!

Thanks @Zara Ahmed for sharing your experience! Going to the office early sounds like it might be worth a try, even with the gas costs. It s'crazy that a 5-minute fix took weeks to discover just because of communication issues. I m'definitely going to look into that Claimyr service too - seems like multiple people have had success with it. It s'both comforting and depressing to know this is such a common problem. You d'think after all these years they d'have figured out a better system for keeping us informed about our cases. Really appreciate everyone sharing their stories and suggestions - this community is more helpful than the actual CalWORKs system!
