Got CalWORKs EBT cards today for my 3 kids with letter H - what does this mean in LA County?

So I just checked my mail and received 3 separate EBT cards for my kids today. Each card has their name and the letter H on it. I'm in LA County and honestly confused because I wasn't expecting these. My regular CalWORKs cash aid comes on our family card, so I don't understand what these extra cards are for. Is this some new benefit? Some kind of special payment? The letter that came with them doesn't explain much, just says something about providing additional support. Has anyone else in LA County received cards with the letter H recently? Should I activate them or call my worker first?

Those are School Lunch EBT cards (also known as Summer EBT). Each kid gets $120 for the summer for food! It's a new permanent program that replaced the pandemic P-EBT. The letter H is just part of their identification system. You should absolutely activate them - it's additional food benefits that don't count against your regular CalWORKs or CalFresh amounts.

Omg thank you! I was so confused. So this is separate from my regular CalWORKs? Do I use it the same way as my regular EBT card? And does the money expire if I don't use it right away?

This is the new Summer EBT program that was made permanent. Each eligible child gets $120 for the summer months (June-August) to help with food costs while school is out. LA County started distributing them this week. A few things to know: 1. These are for FOOD only - they won't work for non-food items 2. These benefits are separate from your regular CalWORKs cash aid and CalFresh 3. They don't expire for 9 months, so you have plenty of time to use them 4. You need to activate each card individually 5. The letter H is just an identifier for this specific benefit issuance If you have any questions about your regular CalWORKs benefits, that's still through your main EBT card and your eligibility worker.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is really helpful. One more question - will the cards be reloaded next summer automatically or is this a one-time thing?

Yes, I got my regular CalWORKs payment on the usual day this month. These cards came separately and they all have my kids' names on them, which made me confused since they don't usually get their own cards.

Try calling the EBT customer service line. I was on hold FOREVER trying to reach LA County about similar cards. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they got me connected to a real person in like 15 minutes. There's even a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE The worker explained that these are the new Summer EBT cards (they replaced P-EBT). Each kid gets $120 food benefits to help during summer. Totally separate from your regular CalWORKs. Worth the call to get all the details though!

Thanks for the tip! The hold times are ridiculous lately. I'll check out that service if I need more specific info about our case.

DO NOT ACTIVATE THESE CARDS!!!! This might be a SCAM!!! I got something similar in the mail last year that looked totally legit but it was actually someone trying to steal my information!!! They're getting really good at making fake EBT cards! Call your worker directly using the official county number before you do anything!!!

This is definitely NOT a scam. These are legitimate Summer EBT cards being issued by LA County right now. They have the official California EBT logo and come with documentation from the state. While it's always good to be cautious, these specific cards with the letter H are part of the new federal Summer EBT program that was approved by Congress. You can verify this on the official CDSS website.

can u use these at same places as regular ebt? i got mine but some stores say they dont take them but they take my regular ebt card??

They should work anywhere that accepts EBT for food purchases. If stores are having trouble processing them, it might be because the system is still catching up with the new program. Ask them to run it as a regular EBT food transaction. If they still have problems, you can call the number on the back of the card for help.

Update: I activated the cards and checked the balances. Each one has $120 just like you all said! So grateful for this extra help with groceries this summer. The kids are home all day and honestly they eat SO MUCH more than during school. Thanks everyone for explaining what these are!
