Anyone getting the new 3.0 EBT card for kids under 6 on CalFresh? Confused about rollout timing
Has anyone in California received the new 3.0 EBT card for children 6 and under yet? I have 2 kids (4 and 2) and have been on CalFresh since last year. I heard something about extra benefits for young children being added automatically but haven't seen anything new on my account. My county worker mentioned it briefly during my recertification last month but was super vague about when it would actually start. Are these cards separate from our regular CalFresh EBT or do the extra benefits just get added to our existing card? Anyone know how much extra we're supposed to get per child? I checked my BenefitsCal account but there's nothing there about it...

They're just starting to roll out the 3.0 cards for kids under 6 this summer. It's a phased approach across different counties and won't be fully implemented until October 2025. The benefit is around $43 per eligible child per month and yes, it will be loaded onto your existing EBT card - you won't get a separate card. Your kids definitely qualify based on their ages, but they're doing it by birth month with the youngest kids first. The county should send you a notice when your children's benefits are about to start.

•thx for info! my daughter just turned 1 last week so sounds like she might be in first group? does anyone know if they auto enroll us or do we have to apply for the kiddos benefit thing separately? My county office never tells me ANYTHING

I got mine!!! My son is 10 months old and we saw the extra 43$ on our regular EBT last week. NO notice or anything it just showed up. But when I called the county they confirmed it was the new child benefit thing. They said all kids under 2 are in first phase, then 2-4 year olds in July, then 4-6 in August. But thats just our county, might be different where u are. Honestly its not much but every bit helps with how expensive everything is now!!

•Thanks for sharing! That's helpful to know about the age rollout. At least I know my 2-year-old might get it in July. $43 isn't a ton but that's almost $90 total for both kids which would definitely help with milk and fresh fruit costs. Wish they'd sent clearer info about this instead of leaving us guessing.

•You're confusing two different programs. The 3.0 cards are specifically for CalFresh households with young children, not CalWorks. Your 5-year-old would qualify, but your 7-year-old would not since the age cutoff is under 6. The rollout is happening in phases through 2025, so you might not receive the benefit for a couple more months depending on your county and your child's age/birth month. Your neighbor might be receiving a different benefit through CalWorks.

My sister in LA county got the 3.0 benefit for her 1-year-old already, but I'm in Sacramento and haven't seen anything for my 3-year-old twins. I think they're doing it by county too, not just by age. The whole system is SO confusing and whenever I call the county office I just get stuck in an endless phone tree! Does anyone know if there's a website that shows the actual rollout schedule by county?

•I was having the same problem trying to reach someone at the county for information about the 3.0 rollout. The automated phone system is terrible. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in under 5 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. The worker I spoke with confirmed Sacramento County's rollout is scheduled for mid-July starting with 0-2 year olds, then the older kids in August. It was worth it to get a clear answer instead of waiting for a notice that might never come!

The whole 3.0 card rollout is ANOTHER JOKE from the system that pits poor families against each other!!! My friend in Alameda got benefits for her 9-month-old in MAY while I'm still waiting for my 15-month-old in Contra Costa!!! Just ANOTHER example of this broken system treating different counties differently. WHY can't they just add it to EVERYONE'S accounts at once instead of this stupid phased approach?? And $43?? That's a JOKE with inflation and food prices. That's like 1 package of diapers. They act like they're doing us a huge favor while we're STRUGGLING!!!

•I understand your frustration with the timeline, but the phased approach is to ensure the system can handle all the updates without crashing. Remember this benefit is permanent - once it starts for your child, it continues until age 6 as long as you remain eligible for CalFresh. So while the rollout is frustrating, the long-term impact will be significant for families. And while $43 might not seem like much, that's over $500 per year per child, which can make a real difference for many households.

wait wait wait, if i get approved for calfresh next week will my 3 year old automatically be eligibl for the 3.0 thing once our county starts it? or did you have to be on calfresh before a certain date??

•From what I understand, any child under 6 in an active CalFresh household qualifies when their county/age group comes up in the rollout schedule. So if you get approved next week, your 3-year-old should automatically be part of the program when your county implements it for that age group. There's no cutoff date for when you had to start receiving CalFresh. Just make sure your child is properly listed as part of your household on your application!

Thanks everyone for the helpful info! I checked my BenefitsCal account again and noticed there's actually a new notice I missed that mentions the 3.0 rollout for my county (San Diego). Looks like my 2-year-old should start receiving benefits in July and my 4-year-old in August. At least now I have some clarity on the timeline. Does anyone know if they prorate benefits if your child turns 6 during a month?

•Yes, they do prorate the benefit. If your child turns 6 during a month, you'll receive the benefit for the days they were still 5. For example, if they turn 6 on the 15th, you'll get about half the monthly benefit amount for that final month. The system calculates this automatically based on the birth date you have on file, so just make sure that information is correct in your account.
