CalWORKs suddenly discontinued after submitting SAR7 - phone number dead, sick with COVID, can't reach anyone

I'm going CRAZY trying to figure out what happened with my Cash Aid! I submitted my SAR7 form online through BenefitsCal before the deadline (uploaded on the 29th). Everything seemed fine - I checked my account on the 1st and 2nd of the month and my CalWORKs was still active. Then I get this voicemail from the county office saying they needed additional information, but when I tried calling back the number they left, it says the number is no longer in service?? How is that even possible?? To make everything worse, I'm stuck in bed with COVID right now and when I checked again on the 3rd, my benefits were suddenly DISCONTINUED. Nothing changed on my report from last month! My income is the same, household is the same, everything. I've tried calling the main office but their mailbox is completely full and it just disconnects. I need this money for my rent and utilities! How am I supposed to fix this when I can't even talk to an actual human being? Has anyone else had their benefits randomly cut off even after submitting everything on time? I'm desperate here.

thts weird, i had something kinda similar hapn in december. number on voicemail was wrong but when i finaly got thru they said i was missing pay stubs even tho i uploaded them. try the main county # not the one they left maybe?

I've tried the main number like 15 times today but it just goes to that automated system and then disconnects me when I try to get to a caseworker. Did they end up fixing yours? I'm worried they're going to say I have to reapply and then I'll be without money for MONTHS.

This happened to me last month. When I finally got through to someone, they told me the system marked my SAR7 as incomplete even though I filled out everything correctly. They said there was a glitch where some of the uploaded documents weren't attaching properly to the reports. Do you have any receipt or confirmation number from when you submitted your SAR7? That was the only thing that saved me - I had taken a screenshot showing the confirmation. If you're sick with COVID, you can also ask for a good cause exemption due to illness to get things reinstated faster once you do reach someone.

Yes I do have the confirmation email from BenefitsCal! It shows the date and time I submitted everything. That's why I'm so confused about why this happened. I didn't know about the good cause exemption - do I just tell them I have COVID when I finally reach someone?

Your benefits should NOT have been discontinued if you submitted on time. This sounds like a processing error on their part. Here's what you need to do: 1. Call first thing in the morning right when they open (typically 8AM) - that's when you're most likely to get through 2. Request an immediate restoration based on timely submission of your SAR7 3. Ask for a supervisor if the first worker can't help you 4. If you still can't get through by phone, send an email to your county office with URGENT in the subject line and attach your submission confirmation 5. You can also file for a state hearing (you have 90 days from the discontinuance date) but hopefully it won't come to that Once you get someone on the phone, they should be able to restore your benefits within 1-3 days since this was their error, not yours. Make sure to explicitly state that you submitted before the deadline and your case was wrongfully discontinued.

Thank you for such a detailed plan! I've been trying since 8am with no luck - it's ridiculous how hard it is to reach anyone. Do you happen to know if there's a direct email for Sacramento County? I can't find one on their website.

I got sick of trying to call my CalWORKs office and eventually used Claimyr.com - it kept me from having to redial for hours! They called the county for me and got me connected to a worker in like 20 minutes. There's a demo video on their site (https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE) showing how it works. Honestly saved my sanity when my benefits got messed up last month. I was about to give up after trying for 3 days straight.

OMG thank you! I just looked it up and I'm definitely going to try this tomorrow. I can't keep calling and getting nowhere. Did they fix your benefits quickly once you actually got through to someone?

I BET THEY NEVER EVEN GOT YOUR FORM!!!! The system is DESIGNED to make us fail! Same thing happened to my sister last year and they claimed they "never received" her paperwork even though she had proof of submission. The workers just mark things as incomplete so they can cut people off and save the state money!!!! I've been fighting with them for THREE MONTHS over a similar issue. Still no resolution. The whole system is BROKEN. Ask for a supervisor IMMEDIATELY when you call - don't waste time with regular workers who can't help.

It really does feel like they're looking for any excuse to discontinue benefits! I'm going to definitely ask for a supervisor if I can ever get through to a human being.

heyy i know this is frustrating! make sure when u do talk to someone u ask them to check if ur in the IEVS system!!! sometimes they get income reports from other places that dont match what u reported and that can trigger an automatic cut. happened to me before and my worker never told me until i asked specifically. good luck!!

Thanks for the tip! I didn't change jobs or anything but I'll definitely ask about IEVS when I call. This whole situation is so stressful.

When you do finally reach someone, make sure you ask them to tell you exactly what triggered the discontinuance. Often there's a specific reason code in their system. In the meantime, you can also submit a request for reconsideration through BenefitsCal - log in to your account, go to your case details, and there should be an option to contest the discontinuance. This creates a formal record of your dispute. You mentioned having COVID - be sure to get documentation of your illness if possible (test results, doctor's note) as this can support your good cause claim for any missed appointments or deadlines. Under CalWORKs rules, illness is a valid reason for accommodation. Also, once this is resolved, ask your worker about setting up electronic notices in the future so you can see communications even if phone messages fail.

I didn't know I could submit a reconsideration request through BenefitsCal! I'll do that tonight. And yeah, I have my positive COVID test results saved on my phone. Hopefully that helps when I finally reach someone. Thanks for the detailed advice!

I just thought of something else - if you can't get through by phone, try going to your county's CalWORKs office in person once you're feeling better and no longer contagious. Bring all your documentation, including your submission confirmation. Sometimes that's the only way to get issues resolved quickly, especially with discontinuances where you need your benefits reinstated ASAP. Also, if you have kids, make sure to ask if your Medi-Cal and CalFresh were also affected or if those benefits are continuing. They should continue even if your Cash Aid was discontinued incorrectly.

That's a good idea about going in person. I'm hoping I'll be well enough by Monday to do that if I still can't reach anyone by phone. And thankfully my Medi-Cal is still active - I checked that right away. It's just the Cash Aid that got cut off.

did u check ur email spam 2? sometimes they send notices there and u miss them

Yeah I checked everywhere - spam, trash, all my folders. Nothing from them except the original confirmation when I submitted the SAR7. That's what makes this so frustrating!

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out there was a system glitch where my SAR7 was received but my verification documents weren't attached properly (even though they showed as uploaded on my end). The worker was able to see my submission date and reattached my documents. My benefits should be reinstated within 3 business days and they're issuing the payment I missed! Don't give up if this happens to you - keep trying to reach someone and make sure you have your submission confirmation ready to prove you did everything on time.

That's great news! This is exactly why documentation is so important when dealing with CalWORKs. Always keep those confirmation numbers and screenshots. Glad you got it resolved without having to reapply!
