Can't reach CalWORKs caseworker about incomplete SAR7 - benefits ending soon!

I'm totally freaking out right now. Got a notice that my SAR7 is incomplete but it doesn't specify WHAT'S missing!! I've called my caseworker like 20 times over the past week and left 4 messages with no callback. My Cash Aid is going to stop in 10 days if I don't fix this! I've tried all the county 800 numbers and just get stuck in those automated systems that eventually hang up. Finally left a message for my worker's supervisor this morning but who knows when they'll call back. My rent is due on the 1st and I'm a single mom with 2 kids - I NEED these benefits! Has anyone figured out how to actually reach a human being at CalWORKs? Or should I just show up at the office? I'm scared they'll just make me take a number and wait all day with my kids. This is so frustrating - why can't they just tell me what's missing on the SAR7??

UGHHH story of my life!!! the system is DESIGNED to make u give up. same thing happened to me last month - got the incomplete SAR7 notice but no info on why. took me 2 WEEKS to reach someone. finally i just went to the office and waited 4hrs with my baby. turns out all i was missing was a signature on page 3!!! like they couldnt just tell me that?? the workers are drowning in cases so they always behind on calls. go in person if u can but bring snacks and toys for the kids lol

Omg 4 hours??? I don't think I can handle that with my 3yr old who can't sit still for 5 mins. Did they at least fix it that same day when you went in? I'm worried about missing work too to go there all day.

You need to try Claimyr - it's the only way I've been able to get through to CalWORKs recently. It basically calls for you and gets you past those awful phone trees, then connects you when there's actually a human on the line. Saved me hours of frustration last month when my SAR7 had issues. The video explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Their website is claimyr.com - totally worth it when you're in a time crunch like this. My benefits were going to stop in 3 days and I was able to get through and fix the issue in one call. As for the SAR7, the most common things they flag as incomplete are: - Missing income verification (pay stubs, etc.) - Not reporting all household income - Missing signatures (there are several places you need to sign) - Not reporting changes in household composition - Incomplete information about property/resources Hope you get it sorted out soon!

Thank you!! I'm definitely going to check this out. At this point I'll try anything. I think it might be the income verification because my employer changed their pay system and the new stubs look different. Just wish they would tell me exactly what's wrong!

i just went thru this last month. call right when they open at 8am. thats when i finally got thru. also try pressing 0 repeatedly sometimes that gets u to a person faster.

I'm a former eligibility worker, and I can tell you that SAR7 problems are extremely common. The most frequent issues are: 1. Missing verification documents (pay stubs, rental agreements, etc.) 2. Incomplete reporting of all household members' income 3. Missing signatures (there are multiple required signature fields) 4. Incomplete property/resource section 5. Not reporting all household members currently living in the home Your best approach would be to: 1. Try reaching your worker early in the morning (7:30-8:30am) when they're less busy 2. Ask specifically for the "SAR7 Error Report" which will tell you exactly what's missing 3. Request an immediate "Rescue Action" if your benefits are about to stop If you can't reach anyone by phone, go to the office with ALL your verification documents - income proof, ID, children's info, housing costs, etc. Bring everything related to your case. Ask the front desk specifically for help with an "Incomplete SAR7 Rescue Action" - using those exact words might help get you faster service. Also, if your benefits do stop, remember you have 30 days to provide the missing information and get them restored without having to reapply completely.

This is SO helpful! I didn't know about the 30-day rule or the "Rescue Action" term. I'm going to write down those exact phrases to use. I have all my documents organized in a folder already - just need someone to actually look at them!

is the 30 day thing true everywhere?? my worker told me i had to reapply after my benefits stopped and i had to wait almost 2 months to get approved again!!!

Yes, the 30-day restoration period is California state policy for CalWORKs. It's called "Restoration of Aid" and it's in the regulations. If a case is discontinued specifically for an incomplete SAR7, you have 30 days from the end of the month to submit the complete form and have benefits restored without a new application. Sounds like your worker gave you incorrect information, which unfortunately happens sometimes due to high caseloads and training gaps.

Just saw your post and wanted to share what worked for me. I had the same issue last year - couldn't reach anyone about an incomplete SAR7. I finally called my state assembly member's office (google your local representative) and explained my situation. Their constituent services person called the county office and suddenly my caseworker called me back within HOURS after I'd been trying for weeks! They can really light a fire under them. Worth a shot if nothing else works!

Update: I tried that Claimyr service and IT WORKED!!! Got through to a person in 20 minutes after trying for a week on my own. Turns out they needed verification of my new job's pay stubs because the format looks different from my old ones. They're giving me 10 days to submit them and said my benefits won't stop if I get them in. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for the help!

So glad it worked out for you!! It's crazy how something so simple can cause so much stress. At least now you know what to fix!

This is exactly what happened to me! They didn't like my new employer's digital paystubs and wanted me to get a letter from HR verifying they were legitimate. So frustrating they couldn't just tell us this in the notice instead of just saying "incomplete" and making us chase them down.

I'm so glad you got through and figured it out! This whole thread is such a perfect example of how broken the communication system is. Like seriously, how hard would it be for them to just include a checklist in the notice that says "Missing: new paystub format verification" instead of just "incomplete"?? For anyone else reading this - definitely save Claimyr and that assembly member tip for future reference. And @Javier Torres thanks for explaining the 30-day restoration rule - I had no idea that existed and it could save people so much stress and reapplication hassle! It's crazy that we have to crowdsource this basic information because the actual system is so hard to navigate. But at least we're all helping each other out! 💪
