CalWORKs payment inconsistency - got partial benefits after confusing discontinuance letter
So frustrated with the county right now. I got this weird letter dated 9/30 that first said they were waiting for information to continue my CalWORKs and I wouldn't be receiving benefits. But then in the VERY NEXT PARAGRAPH it said they received my info and my benefits would continue! Talk about giving me a heart attack for no reason. I got my $23 food supplement on the 2nd, but my regular cash aid payment that was supposed to hit today isn't there. Has anyone else had issues with confusing notices and missing payments recently? I've got bills due next week and I'm freaking out about whether my benefits are actually discontinued or not. Do I need to reapply or what?

This sounds like what happened to me last month. Did you turn in your SAR7 recently? Sometimes they process the discontinuance notice and the reinstatement in the same batch, which creates those confusing letters. The part that says your benefits will continue is probably accurate, but there might be a delay in processing your cash aid. Did you check BenefitsCal to see if it shows active or discontinued?

•Yes! I did turn in my SAR7 like 2 weeks ago. I didnt know they could do the discontinuance and reinstatment at the same time, thats so confusing. I just checked my BenefitsCal and it says 'active' for my case status but the payment history hasnt updated for October yet. Does this mean i'll still get the payment just late??

The county is always doing this confusing stuff! The exact same thing happened to me in August. My worker said they have to generate the discontinuance notice when something is pending, EVEN IF they already received what they needed before the letter actually gets sent out! Makes ZERO sense and causes so much stress for people! I would call your worker ASAP to make sure everything is good with your case. Sometimes they hold payments if there's something else they need even though your case shows active.

•Thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one dealing with this! I've been trying to call all morning but I keep getting the 'all agents are busy' message and then it hangs up on me. So frustrating when rent is due next week...

The letter confusion happens because of how their system is set up. When documentation is pending, the system automatically triggers a discontinuance notice. If they process your documents before the notice goes out, they're required to send both notices - first the discontinuance and then the continuation notice. Since you got your $23 supplement, it suggests your case is indeed active. There are a few possible explanations for the missing cash payment: 1. It might be delayed by 1-2 business days due to processing time 2. There could be a hold on your case requiring additional verification 3. Your semi-annual report may have shown income changes affecting your benefit amount 4. There could be a technical issue with the payment system I'd recommend checking your EBT card balance through the app or website first, as sometimes the deposit notification is delayed. If it's not there by tomorrow, you'll need to contact your worker directly.

•this seems right. i worked at the county office b4 and the system auto generates the discontinuance then they have to manual override it when docs come in. its super dumb but thats how the old system works. call your worker asap tho, cash payments can get held up for all kinds of reasons.

Call your worker ASAP! I went through something similar and found out there was an income verification they needed from my part-time job. They had put my case "on hold" even though my BenefitsCal showed active. It was a total mess and took 3 weeks to fix! Don't wait, call them today!!

•I've been trying to call all day but can never get through! The phone system just keeps saying all workers are busy and to call back. It's so frustrating.

If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try using Claimyr. I was in a similar situation last month and couldn't get through for days. Claimyr got me connected to a live person in about 20 minutes instead of the constant busy signals and hangups. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE that shows how it works. Saved me from missing my rent payment when my benefits were delayed.

•I've never heard of this before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything that might help me talk to a real person.

The same thng hapend to me in july! the county is so disorganized OMG. turns out there was a "system flag" on my case bcuz i reported a change of address but they lost the paper. my benfit was 2 weeks late but they did backpay me. BUT u have to keep calling them over and over. dont assume it will fix itself!!! also check ur benfitscal account to see if they posted any notices there sometimes they upload stuff there that they dont mail out

•Oh that's a good idea, I'll check for notices on BenefitsCal too. I did move 3 months ago but I thought that was all taken care of already. Maybe that's still causing issues somehow?

Just to clarify something important - the $23 you received on the 2nd was likely your CalFresh (food stamps) supplement, not related to your CalWORKs cash aid. They're separate programs even though they're often managed together. If you're seeing your case as active in BenefitsCal but no payment, I strongly recommend either: 1. Going in person to your county office if possible, as they often can resolve issues on the spot 2. Finding a way to speak directly with your worker by phone If your cash aid doesn't arrive within 3 business days of your normal payment date, you can request an emergency payment if you have urgent needs like rent or utilities that are due.

•Thank you for explaining that. I think you're right about the $23 being CalFresh. I'll try going to the office in person tomorrow morning. Do you know if I need to bring any specific documents with me?

UPDATE: I finally got through to the county this morning! They said there was a "system flag" on my case because I reported a change in my work hours (I got a few more hours at my job last month). Even though my income is still well below the IRT limit, they had to verify it before releasing my payment. The worker said my cash aid should be deposited by tomorrow, and they apologized for the confusing letter. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

•Glad you got it resolved! This happens way too often. For future reference, any time you report a change in income - even a small one - there's a good chance they'll put a temporary hold on your payment until they verify it. Always report changes early in the month if possible to avoid these delays.
