CalWORKs just reloaded diaper benefits for my toddlers - anyone else get this payment?

I checked my EBT card yesterday and noticed LA county put $158 for each of my girls (3 & 5 years old). I wasn't expecting any extra money this month and my regular Cash Aid payment already came through last week. Is this the diaper benefit I heard something about? I thought that was only for kids under 3, but my 5 year old got it too. Has anyone else received this payment recently? Not complaining about extra help but worried they might want it back if it's a mistake.

Yes! That's the CalWORKs Diaper Benefit program. LA County implemented it last year but there have been some delays in getting payments out. Each child under age 6 who's on CalWORKs qualifies for $30/month diaper benefit, and they sometimes issue backpayments which is probably why you got that much at once. It's separate from your regular Cash Aid and doesn't count toward your income limits. The payments should come automatically as long as you have eligible children in your household.

Oh thank you so much for explaining! So both my girls qualify since they're both under 6? I was confused because I thought I read somewhere it was only for babies. That's a huge help with how expensive diapers are for my 3 year old - we're still working on potty training and it's slow going.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach someone? I was having the same issue trying to call about missing diaper benefits last month. Used claimyr.com and they got me through to a live person in about 10 minutes. They have this system where they call and navigate the phone tree for you, then call you when they have a worker on the line. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a video of how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE if you want to check it out.

The diaper money is awesome but make sure you spend it quick!! My cousin said the money expired after 180 days and she lost $200+ because she was saving it.

This is incorrect information. CalWORKs benefits, including the diaper supplement, follow the standard EBT expiration rules - benefits expire after 365 days (one year) of inactivity on your account, not 180 days. As long as you're using your EBT card regularly for any purchases, none of your benefits will expire. I work with benefit recipients daily and have seen a lot of confusion about this.

WATCH OUT this could be a mistake!!!! my friend got extra $$ last year and spent it then they said it was an error and made her pay it ALL back. i would call and confirm before spending. better safe than sorry when dealing with calworks they WILL take it back trust me

This is definitely not a mistake - it's the official Diaper Benefit that was approved by the state legislature. OP's payment amount ($158 per child) suggests this might be a few months of payments combined ($30/month per child). The program is fully implemented now, though some counties were slow to roll it out. You won't have to pay it back as long as your children are under 6 and actively receiving CalWORKs.

I got diaper benefits too but I'm so confused about how to track them. When I login to BenefitsCal it shows my regular cash aid but doesn't breakdown the diaper money separately??? How do I know how much diaper money I have left vs regular CalWORKs? My son is 2 and I know he qualifies but the payment seems random.

The diaper benefit doesn't show separately in BenefitsCal - it's just added to your total Cash Aid amount on your EBT card. If you want to track it specifically, you have three options: 1. Call the EBT customer service line and ask for a breakdown of your recent deposits 2. Request an itemized benefit statement from your county office 3. Keep your Notice of Action letters which should specify when diaper benefits are added The $30/month per eligible child should be consistent each month, but sometimes they issue retroactive payments if they missed previous months, which might explain why it seems random.

My worker said the diaper benefit is based on age in system. If ur kids birthdays are wrong in the county system you might need to fix that. My daughter's birth year was entered wrong and I had to bring her birth certificate to get the diaper money.

What about if your kid is in pull-ups not actual diapers? My worker is saying my 4yr old doesn't qualify because she's in pull-ups not "diapers" which is total BS. The CalWORKS handbook doesn't say anything about what TYPE of diapers. Has anyone dealt with this?

Your worker is incorrect. The CalWORKs Diaper Benefit applies to ANY child under 6 who is on CalWORKs, regardless of whether they use diapers, pull-ups, or are fully potty trained. The benefit is calculated based solely on the child's age, not their diapering status. It's an additional support for families with young children - not a reimbursement that requires proof of diaper purchases. If your worker continues to give you this incorrect information, ask to speak with a supervisor or file for a state hearing.

Update: Called my caseworker and confirmed this IS the diaper benefit! She said they processed several months at once because there was a delay implementing it in our region. Both my girls qualify since they're under 6. Thanks everyone for your help!
