CalWORKs benefit amount not updated after SAR 7 - when will BenefitsCal show new Cash Aid amount?

I'm so confused right now. I submitted my SAR 7 report last week and spoke with my caseworker on the phone when she was processing it. She specifically told me my Cash Aid amount would be increasing starting next month because my income changed (I lost some hours at my job). She even said 'You'll be getting about $175 more each month now' and I got a notification saying my amount would be changing. But when I check BenefitsCal today, it's still showing the EXACT SAME amount I've been getting! Does the system take a while to update after they process your SAR 7? Or should I be worried something went wrong? The rent is due next week and I was really counting on that increase...

Yes, BenefitsCal can take 3-5 business days to update after your SAR 7 is processed. Sometimes even longer if they processed it right before a weekend. The notification you received is a good sign that the change is in the system, but the actual amount showing on BenefitsCal often lags behind. If you received the official Notice of Action (NOA) letter saying your amount is changing, that's what matters legally, not what BenefitsCal displays. The correct amount should be deposited regardless of what's showing online.

Thank you! I haven't gotten the NOA in the mail yet, just that notification on BenefitsCal that said changes were made to my case. I guess I'll wait a few more days before panicking. I just really need that money to cover bills this month.

The worker might have already processed your SAR 7 in the system but sometimes the BenefitsCal website takes time to sync up with their main database. Did you get an actual Notice of Action letter yet? That paper document is more official than what shows on BenefitsCal. If you don't see the change online by the time your benefits are actually supposed to be deposited, then you should definitely call back.

No, I haven't gotten the NOA letter yet. It's only been about 4 days since she processed it. I'll keep checking my mail. Thanks for the reassurance!

dont trust what they say on phone!! i had worker tell me i was getting $300 more but then when i got my payment it was only $87 extra. they always get it wrong when telling u amounts verbally. wait for the actual notice of action paper that comes in mail, THAT is what ur gonna get

This isn't always true. I've had caseworkers who were spot-on with their calculations. It depends on the worker's experience and whether they're looking at the final calculation screen when they tell you the amount. But yes, the NOA is the official amount.

I remember having this exact same issue last year! Called about my SAR 7, worker said I'd get more money, but BenefitsCal didn't update for almost a WEEK. Drove me crazy checking it every day! But then suddenly it updated and I got the right amount on my card when the deposit date came. As long as you got that notification saying changes were made, you should be good. The system is just super slow sometimes.

Honestly, trying to reach the CalWORKs office to double-check this will probably drive you nuts with the wait times. I was in a similar situation and spent 3 days trying to get through. Someone told me about Claimyr.com and it was a game-changer - they got me through to a live person at the benefits office in under 20 minutes. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE But like others said, if you got the notification about changes, you're probably fine. The BenefitsCal site is notoriously slow to update.

Thanks for this! I might try it if I don't see the updated amount by next week. The hold times are ridiculous whenever I call my county office.

What county are you in? Different counties have different timeframes for updating BenefitsCal after processing SAR 7 forms. Some update within 1-2 days, others can take up to a week. Also, make sure you're looking at the right month when checking your benefit amount. The current month won't change - you need to look at next month's projected amount. Also, did the worker specifically say the income change was approved, or just that she received your SAR 7? Sometimes workers say they'll process something but then it gets delayed if they need additional verification documents.

I'm in Los Angeles County. And yes, she specifically said she approved the change based on my new pay stubs I submitted with my SAR 7. I'll double check I'm looking at the right month on BenefitsCal - that's a good point!

They ALWAYS tell u one thing n do another!! system is broken n they don't care about us. my worker told me same thing last month but amount never changed. had to call 8 times before gettin someone who fixed it. they hope u don't notice so they can save $$$

While I understand your frustration with the system, this is more likely a delay in the BenefitsCal website updating rather than an intentional attempt to withhold benefits. The Notice of Action and the actual benefit amount deposited are what legally matter. If those are incorrect, that's definitely worth fighting about, but the online display often lags behind.

One more thing to check - look at your EBT transaction history around the date your benefits normally get deposited. Sometimes the correct amount will be deposited even if BenefitsCal hasn't updated to show the new amount. The actual payment system and the customer portal don't always sync up perfectly.

That's a great idea! My deposit isn't scheduled until the 3rd, so I can't check that yet, but I'll definitely look when the time comes. Hopefully it updates before then anyway.

did u check ur income reporting threshold (IRT) on the sar7? if u went over that number even for 1 month they might not increase ur benefits

No, I'm definitely under my IRT. My hours got cut at work so I'm making less now, not more. That's why she said my benefits would go up.
