SAR 7 approved for higher CalWORKs amount but EBT payment still the same - when will increase start?
Just completed my Semi-Annual Report (SAR 7) online last week and had my phone interview yesterday. My caseworker said she approved me for a higher cash aid amount since my hours got cut at work (making about $430 less per month now). She specifically told me I'd be getting $277 more in CalWORKs starting with my next payment. But I just checked my EBT card today and it's still showing the same amount I've been getting ($653). Does anyone know if the increase doesn't kick in until next month? My regular payment date is the 3rd - so I'm wondering if I won't see the higher amount until December 3rd? Really counting on that extra money for rent this month. When do benefit increases usually start after a SAR 7 approval?

Yes, any changes reported on your SAR 7 won't affect your benefits until the following payment month. If you completed your SAR 7 in November, the changes will take effect on your December 3rd payment. The county processes SAR 7 information for the next benefit period, not retroactively. So you'll start getting the higher amount next month.

•Thank you for explaining! The worker wasn't clear about that part. Do you know if there's any way to get an emergency supplement for this month? My rent is due on the 1st and I was really counting on having that extra money.

•So frustrating! Did you try asking for emergency assistance for the month you had to wait? I'm trying to figure out if that's even an option.

If your income dropped significantly, you might qualify for a mid-period adjustment instead of waiting until your next payment cycle. CalWORKs has what's called the "Income Reporting Threshold" (IRT) - did your worker mention anything about that? If your income drops below your IRT, you can sometimes get an immediate adjustment rather than waiting for your next payment date. Worth calling back to ask specifically about this!

•No, she didn't mention anything about an IRT! I'll definitely call back and ask about this. I remember getting a notice with some number on it that might have been this IRT thing. Thanks for the tip!

I've been through this exact situation trying to reach someone at CalWORKs to ask about mid-period adjustments. Spent hours on hold and got disconnected twice. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they hold your place in line and call you back when a worker picks up. Saved me literally 3 hours of hold time. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. With your situation being time-sensitive with rent coming up, it might be worth checking out instead of fighting the phone system.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I tried calling yesterday and gave up after 45 minutes on hold. Didn't know there were services like that. I'll try regular calling one more time tomorrow, but might use this if I can't get through since rent is coming up fast.

your caseworker should of made it clear when the new amount starts! i swear they just assume we know all this stuff already. when i did my sar7 in september my worker told me october would be the bigger payment.

•Omg this is so true! They never explain anything properly and then act surprised when we call confused. My worker literally told me "it's in the handbook" when I asked when my increase would start. Like yeah let me just read through 50 pages real quick while my kids are hungry 🙄

To clarify some of the information here: 1. Standard SAR 7 changes take effect the month after you submit the report (so December 3rd in your case) 2. However, there are two ways you might be able to get help sooner: - If your income dropped below your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT), you can request a mid-period adjustment - You may be eligible for emergency assistance through the CalWORKs Immediate Need program if you're facing eviction Call your worker back and specifically ask about both of these options. Make sure to mention that you're at risk of not making rent. If your income drop was significant enough, they should process an adjustment right away instead of making you wait until December.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll definitely call tomorrow and ask specifically about the mid-period adjustment and the Immediate Need program. I didn't realize there were these options. Really appreciate the help!

Just a heads up, since ur SAR7 was for Nov-April benefit period, don't 4get that December is also when they add the special needs winter clothing allowance for families with kids in colder counties! So ur Dec payment might be even more than what the worker told you if u have children on ur case and live in one of those counties. I always forget about this until it shows up!

•what counties get that??? i never heard of winter clothing money and im in sacramento with 2 kids!

•The winter clothing allowance is only for specific mountain and northern counties with colder weather. Sacramento unfortunately doesn't qualify. It's mainly for places like Alpine, Lassen, Modoc, Sierra, Siskiyou and a few others. The allowance is $30 per eligible child and gets added to the December payment automatically if you live in a qualifying county.

Did you also report the income change on your CalFresh (food stamps)? Just making sure because sometimes people forget that CalWORKs and CalFresh are separate even though they're on the same EBT card. Your CalFresh should also increase with the lower income, but that might be on a different schedule than your cash aid.

•Yes! The worker said my CalFresh is going up by $190 too. I was mainly focused on the cash aid for rent, but the extra food money will definitely help. I'm guessing that increase will also start in December?

•That's correct - both your CalWORKs and CalFresh increases will start with your December benefits. CalFresh follows the same reporting schedule as CalWORKs when you receive both programs. The good news is you'll get both increases at once!
