CalWORKs cash aid amounts suddenly reduced this month - anyone else see cuts?

I just checked my EBT card and my CalWORKs payment is $219 less than what I usually get! No warning or notice from my worker about why this happened. I haven't had any changes in my household or income since my last SAR7. Is anyone else seeing their cash aid get cut this month? I'm so stressed about this because my rent is due next week and I was counting on the full amount. Has the county changed the payment amounts for everyone or is this just happening to me?

Mine got cut too!!! I'm down $178 from what I normally receive and I'm freaking OUT. I didn't report any changes either. I've been trying to call my worker for 2 days but keep getting voicemail. The automated system just says my case is 'active' but doesn't explain the decrease. Could it be related to the IRT maybe? But I haven't had any income changes that would put me over the IRT limit.

Did you guys check if your semi-annual report was due? Sometimes they cut benefits if the SAR7 was due and they didn't receive it on time. They're supposed to send a discontinuance notice before cutting, but I've had notices arrive after the cut happened.

This sounds like it could be several things: 1. There may have been a system-wide recalculation of benefits based on cost-of-living adjustments 2. Your SAR7 might have been due and something was flagged 3. The county might have received income verification from another source (like quarterly wage data or UIB) 4. Someone in your household might have hit their 48-month time limit 5. There could have been a WTW participation issue You need to call your county office ASAP to find out. They are required to send a Notice of Action explaining any benefit reduction, but sometimes these arrive late. Check your BenefitsCal account too - sometimes notices are posted there before they arrive by mail.

Im going to check BenefitsCal right now, didn't think of that. My SAR7 isn't due until next month and nobody in my house has reached the time limit (I've only been on CalWORKs for 2 years). I meet my WTW hours at my job so I don't think thats it? This is so frustrating.

they mess up ALL THE TIME. i bet u they miscalculated something or put in wrong info. my cash aid was cut by $300 last summer for NO REASON AT ALL and when i finally got ahold of someone, they said it was a "system error" and fixed it but didn't backpay me for the missed amount for 3 months!!!! the system is broken and they don't care if we can't pay rent

While errors happen, there's usually some explanation. If it's a reduction (not complete discontinuance), it's most likely either an income calculation issue or someone in the household has a new exemption status or time limit issue. The county is required by law to issue a Notice of Action with appeal rights for any reduction. You can file for a state hearing if you disagree with the reduction - but do it quickly as there are deadlines.

I had a similar issue last month! After days of trying to reach someone at the county, I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. It helped me skip the phone queue and got me connected to a worker in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Turns out the county had recorded income from 3 months ago twice, which pushed me over the income limit temporarily. The worker fixed it while I was on the phone and restored my full benefit amount. Definitely worth calling to figure out what happened in your case.

Thanks I'll check this out! I've been calling over and over with no luck getting through. Did they backpay you for the amount that was cut when they fixed it?

Wait, has anyone got a letter about the COLA (cost of living adjustment)? My cousin works for the county and said sometimes when they adjust the payment standards up, they also adjust the deduction amounts which can actually lower some people's benefits if they have certain types of income. idk if thats wats happening but maybe

That's exactly what I was thinking. If the Maximum Aid Payment (MAP) changed, it can affect how earned income is calculated against the grant. When did this reduction happen? Was it on the 1st of the month? Changes to benefit structures often happen at the beginning of a quarter or fiscal year, which might explain the timing.

update: i went to the office in person today and waited 3 hours to talk to someone. they said in my case it was because my 16yr old turned 17 last month and the way they calculate the payment changed for her age group!!!! why couldn't they just explain that in a letter?? they're sending me a written explanation now. might be something similar for some of you?

thats why i h8 the system they never tell us anything until after the fact then we gotta run around trying to fix everything at the last minute smh

For those experiencing unexplained benefit reductions, here's what to do: 1. Check your BenefitsCal account for any uploaded notices 2. Review your last SAR7 to confirm all information was reported correctly 3. Calculate if anyone in your home reached their 48-month time limit 4. Check if a teenager aged up to a different benefit calculation category 5. Verify all Welfare to Work participation is up to date 6. Call your eligibility worker (document date/time of calls) 7. If needed, request a state hearing within 90 days If the reduction was a county error, you're entitled to restored benefits. Make sure to get any explanation in writing.

I finally got through to someone! It was because my part-time job hours increased slightly last quarter (even though I reported it on time) and they just now processed it. The worker said they sent a notice but I never received it. They're adjusting my next payment to include what was cut this month. Thank you everyone for your help!

I'm glad you finally got answers! This whole thread has been so helpful - I'm dealing with a similar issue right now where my payment dropped by about $150 this month. Based on what everyone shared, I'm going to check my BenefitsCal account first, then try that Claimyr service if I can't get through by phone. It's ridiculous that they don't send proper notices when they make these changes. At least now I know what questions to ask when I do reach someone. Thanks for updating us on what caused your reduction!

You're so welcome! I'm really glad this thread helped you too. Definitely try the BenefitsCal account first - that's where I found the notice that never came in the mail. The Claimyr thing actually worked really well for getting through the phone lines quickly. It's so frustrating that we have to jump through all these hoops just to find out why our benefits changed, but at least we can help each other figure it out. Hope you get your issue resolved quickly! Let us know what you find out - it might help the next person dealing with this.

This is such a helpful thread! I'm new to CalWORKs (just started receiving benefits 3 months ago) and seeing all these stories about unexpected cuts is honestly terrifying. I had no idea there were so many reasons why benefits could suddenly change - like when kids age up or system errors. I'm going to bookmark that BenefitsCal tip and the Claimyr service just in case I ever need them. It's really frustrating that the county doesn't send clear explanations when they make changes. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and solutions - this is exactly the kind of information new recipients like me need to know!

Welcome to CalWORKs! I totally understand how scary it can be when you're new to the system and hearing about all these potential issues. One thing that really helped me when I first started was keeping a folder with copies of everything - every SAR7 I submit, every notice I receive, even notes from phone calls with my worker including dates and times. It sounds like overkill but it's saved me so many headaches when discrepancies come up. Also, don't be afraid to ask your eligibility worker to explain anything you don't understand - they're supposed to help you navigate the system. And definitely stay active in this community - everyone here has been through similar situations and the collective knowledge is invaluable!

Wow, this thread has been eye-opening! I've been on CalWORKs for about 8 months and had no idea there were so many potential reasons for benefit changes. Reading about the age-up issue, system errors, and income recalculations really makes me want to be more proactive about monitoring my case. I'm definitely going to start checking my BenefitsCal account regularly and keep better records like some of you suggested. It's concerning that proper notices aren't always sent out - that seems like such a basic requirement. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and the practical tips about Claimyr and what questions to ask when calling. This community is such a valuable resource for navigating this complicated system!

I'm so glad this thread has been helpful for you! It really is overwhelming when you're new to the system and realize how many things can affect your benefits without warning. One thing I learned the hard way is to also keep track of any changes in your household - even small things like a kid starting a part-time job or someone moving in temporarily. The county sometimes finds out about these changes through other agencies before you report them, which can cause benefit adjustments. Also, if you ever do get a reduction notice, don't panic - you have rights and there are appeals processes. This community has been a lifesaver for me in understanding how everything works. We all need to stick together and share what we learn!

This thread is incredibly valuable - thank you all for sharing your experiences! As someone who's been on CalWORKs for about 6 months, I had no idea there were so many potential causes for sudden benefit reductions. Reading about system errors, age-up calculations, income recalculations, and missing notices is both enlightening and concerning. I'm definitely going to start monitoring my BenefitsCal account more closely and keep detailed records of all my interactions with the county office. It's really disappointing that proper notification seems to be such an issue - we shouldn't have to detective our way through figuring out why our benefits changed. The Claimyr tip sounds really helpful for getting through those impossible phone queues. Thank you to everyone who took the time to explain the appeals process and document everything - this kind of peer support and knowledge sharing is exactly what we need to navigate this complex system!

I'm really glad this thread has been so informative for you too! When I first started on CalWORKs about a year ago, I felt completely lost navigating all the rules and potential issues. This community has taught me so much that my eligibility worker never explained. One thing I'd add to everyone's great advice is to also keep track of your benefit payment dates - sometimes delays or changes in timing can be an early indicator that something's been flagged in your case. And if you do have to call, try calling right when the office opens (usually 8am) - that's when I've had the most luck getting through without using services like Claimyr. It's frustrating that we have to become experts in the system just to make sure we get the benefits we're entitled to, but sharing knowledge like this really helps level the playing field!

This thread has been so incredibly helpful! I'm dealing with a similar situation where my CalWORKs payment was reduced by about $95 this month with no explanation. Reading everyone's experiences has given me a roadmap of what to check - I'm going to look at my BenefitsCal account first, then verify my SAR7 status and see if there were any household changes I might have missed. It's really frustrating that the county doesn't proactively communicate these changes clearly, but I'm grateful for this community sharing practical solutions like the Claimyr service and tips about calling early in the morning. I'll definitely update here once I figure out what caused my reduction - hopefully it helps the next person going through this stress!

I hope you're able to get to the bottom of your reduction quickly! A $95 drop is definitely significant enough to investigate. One thing I'd suggest is when you do get through to someone, ask them to walk you through exactly what changed in your case calculation - sometimes they'll say "income increased" but won't specify if it was earned income, a one-time payment, or even an error in data entry. Also, if you find out it was a mistake on their end, make sure to ask about getting the missing amount restored retroactively. I've learned from this thread that we really have to advocate for ourselves and ask specific questions. Good luck with your investigation, and definitely keep us posted on what you discover!

This thread has been so educational! I've been on CalWORKs for about 4 months and honestly had no idea there were so many reasons benefits could suddenly change without clear notice. Reading about the age-up calculations, system errors, income recalculations, and missing notices is both helpful and alarming. I'm definitely going to start checking my BenefitsCal account monthly and keep better documentation of everything like several of you suggested. It's really concerning that proper notification seems to be such a widespread issue - we shouldn't have to play detective to figure out why our benefits changed! The tips about Claimyr and calling right when offices open are super valuable. Thank you everyone for being so generous with sharing your experiences and solutions - this kind of community support makes navigating this confusing system so much more manageable.

I'm so glad you found this thread helpful! When I first started receiving CalWORKs benefits about 2 years ago, I wish I had access to this kind of community knowledge. You're absolutely right that we shouldn't have to be detectives just to understand our own benefits. One additional tip I'd share is to also keep a simple calendar or notebook where you jot down any changes in your life - even things that seem minor like a kid getting a part-time job, temporary income, or someone staying with you for a few weeks. The county sometimes receives information from other agencies (like employers reporting wages or school enrollment changes) before you think to report it, which can trigger benefit recalculations. Stay proactive with checking that BenefitsCal account, and don't hesitate to ask questions here if anything seems off. We're all in this together!

This thread is exactly what I needed to see today! I just noticed my CalWORKs payment was reduced by $134 this month and I've been panicking about it. Reading everyone's experiences has really helped me understand that this happens more often than I thought and there are actual steps I can take to figure out what's going on. I'm going to check my BenefitsCal account right away and then try the early morning calling strategy or that Claimyr service if needed. It's so frustrating that they don't automatically send clear explanations when they make changes to our benefits - we're already dealing with enough stress without having to chase down basic information about our own cases! Thank you all for sharing your stories and solutions. I'll definitely update once I find out what caused my reduction in case it helps others going through the same thing.

I'm really sorry you're going through this stress too! A $134 reduction is definitely significant and would throw anyone into panic mode. You're taking the right approach by checking BenefitsCal first - I've found that's often where notices show up even when they don't arrive in the mail. When you do get through to someone, make sure to ask them to explain exactly what triggered the change and get it in writing if possible. Also, don't forget to ask about your appeal rights if you disagree with whatever they tell you. From reading all these experiences, it seems like a lot of these reductions end up being fixable once you can actually talk to someone who knows your case. I hope you get answers quickly and that it turns out to be something simple to resolve. Keep us posted on what you find out - your experience could definitely help the next person dealing with this same situation!
