CalWORKs paid me less than my approved amount - what went wrong?

I'm so confused about my CalWORKs payment this month. I'm supposed to get $975 for me and my 2 kids according to my approval letter from January, but I just checked my EBT card and they only loaded $623? Has anyone else had this problem where they pay you way less than what you're entitled to? My rent is due next week and I was counting on the full amount. I haven't changed anything in my household or income that would cause this. Do I need to call my worker or is this some kind of automatic deduction I don't know about?

did u report any income on ur last SAR7? they reduce ur benefits based on income even if its under the IRT

I did report that I started working part-time at Target, but I'm only making like $840 a month. The worker never said anything about my benefits changing when I turned in my SAR7 last month.

This is definitely related to your new job income. When you report earnings on your SAR7, they apply something called the "income disregard" - they don't count the first $550 of your earnings, but then they subtract 50% of the remaining earnings from your grant amount. So with $840 income, they'd disregard $550, leaving $290. Then they'd take half of that ($145) off your grant. That should only reduce your benefits by $145 though, not by $352... something else might be going on here.

Thank you for explaining that! I had no idea about the income disregard thing. But you're right - the math still doesn't add up with how much they reduced me.

You need to check if they're counting any child support as income too. If the non-custodial parent is paying child support through the county, they automatically deduct that from your cash aid. Also check if they applied any overpayment recoupment - that's when they take money back if they think they paid you too much in previous months. You should have gotten a Notice of Action explaining the reduction though.

This happened to me too! They started taking 10% of my grant for an overpayment from THREE YEARS AGO that I didn't even know about. Check your mail carefully - the overpayment notices look like any other county letter and they're easy to miss.

CALL YOUR WORKER IMMEDIATELY!!! Don't wait! If there's a mistake they need to fix it before rent is due. And if it's not a mistake, you need to know exactly why they cut your benefits so much. The county ALWAYS makes mistakes with calculations - I've had to fight them THREE TIMES this year alone for underpaying me. Document everything and ask for a detailed breakdown of how they calculated your new grant amount.

I've been calling all morning and can't get through. It just keeps putting me on hold and then disconnecting after like 30 minutes. So frustrating!!!

Try using Claimyr to reach your caseworker faster - it's the only thing that worked for me after trying for days to get through to my CalWORKs office. They get you through the phone system and have someone call you back when they reach a worker. I used their video demo (https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE) to figure out how it works. Just go to claimyr.com and they'll help you connect to your county office without waiting on hold forever. Seriously worth it when you need to get something fixed quickly.

Thank you! I'm going to try this right now. I need to get this figured out before my rent is due or I'll be in big trouble with my landlord.

also check if they stopped giving u money for one of ur kids maybe? sometime they remove a kid if their ssn dont verify or they think they not living with u

Omg I hope that's not it. Both my kids are definitely living with me! But maybe there was some paperwork issue? I'll ask about that too when I call.

I had a similar issue last month where my payment dropped by almost $400. Turned out I had missed a Welfare to Work appointment and they sanctioned me, but I never received the notice about the appointment! Make sure to ask if you have any WTW sanctions applied to your case. They're supposed to send multiple notices before sanctioning you, but we all know how reliable their mail system is... 🙄

EXACTLY THIS! The county CONSTANTLY claims they sent notices that never arrive. ALWAYS request proof they sent the notice and ask for the EXACT DATE they mailed it. If they can't provide proof, you can fight the sanction. Also OP - did you switch to paperless notices on BenefitsCal? Sometimes the electronic notices don't show up properly!

I see you mentioned you're going to call them. When you do, ask specifically for an "Income Computation Worksheet" - this is a form that shows exactly how they calculated your grant amount. Also request a hearing immediately if there's an error - you only have 90 days from the Notice of Action date to appeal. Let us know what you find out!

Update: I finally got through using that Claimyr service. Turns out they DID reduce my benefits because of my income, but there was also an overpayment recovery happening at the same time! The worker said I was overpaid by $1680 last year because I didn't report a household change in time. They're taking 10% of my grant amount each month until it's paid back. She's sending me all the paperwork that explains it. I wish I had known about this before the money was just suddenly less. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you got it figured out! That's exactly why I always tell people to ask for the Income Computation Worksheet - it shows everything they're doing to your grant. $1680 overpayment is a lot though, definitely request to see the documentation on when that happened and why they think you were overpaid. Sometimes their calculations are wrong on overpayments too. At least now you know what to expect each month going forward!

That overpayment recovery can be really brutal when you're not expecting it! Just FYI - you have the right to request a lower repayment amount if 10% is causing hardship. They can sometimes reduce it to 5% or even pause collections temporarily if you can show it's creating a financial emergency. Also make sure to keep all the paperwork they send you about the overpayment - if their math is wrong or they can't prove when/why it happened, you can dispute it. Good luck with everything!
