CalFresh benefits stolen and replaced with cash - where do I pick up replacement money?
So my calfresh benefits were stolen last month (someone skimmed my card at a market I think). I reported it right away and filled out all the paperwork. My worker just called me today and said they approved the claim and the stolen amount ($342) is being issued as CASH not being put back on my EBT card. She said something about going to pick it up but honestly my kid was screaming in the background and I couldn't hear all the details. Has anyone had their stolen CalFresh replaced with actual cash instead of getting the benefits reloaded? Where do I go to pick this up? Is it at the county office or do they mail a check or what? I need this money for groceries ASAP.

•I've been trying to call back all day but can't get through the phone system. It just keeps disconnecting me after 20 minutes on hold 😩

They typically replace stolen CalFresh benefits on your EBT card, not as cash. However, in some cases when there are technical issues with the EBT system or your case has unique circumstances, they might issue a cash replacement. If you were told it's being issued as cash, you'll need to pick it up at your county DPSS/Social Services office. Bring your ID and case information. They will NOT mail cash. You'll either get a check or a direct cash payment at the office. If you can't reach your worker, you can call the main CalFresh customer service number at 1-877-328-9677 to confirm where your replacement is available.

•Thank you! I'll try going to my county office tomorrow morning. I tried the customer service number but kept getting disconnected after waiting forever.

My sister had something similar happen but it turned out they meant they were putting it on the CASH side of her EBT card, not the food stamps side. Have you checked both sides of your card balance?

•Wait, I didn't even think of that! Let me check right now... Nope, just checked and there's nothing on either side of my card. Still have to figure out where to pick it up I guess.

The same thing happened to me last summer! So frustrating because no one explained it clearly. In my case, they issued me a paper check that I had to pick up at the county office. When you go, make sure you bring: - Photo ID - Your EBT card - Case number (if you have it) - The claim paperwork if you have a copy The line was RIDICULOUS when I went. I waited almost 3 hours. Try to get there when they first open if you can!

•Thanks for the tips! Ugh, I hate waiting in those lines. I'll definitely try to get there early tomorrow.

Just to clarify the policy here - when CalFresh benefits are stolen and a claim is approved, replacement benefits are typically reissued to your EBT card. However, if there are specific circumstances (like repeated theft from your account, technical issues with your EBT card, or certain administrative reasons), the county can issue a replacement as cash or check. In this case, you'll need to go to your county welfare office to pick up the payment. Some counties will have you go to a specific "issuance desk" or "benefits distribution" area. Bring your ID and case information. Also, this is a good time to request a new EBT card if you suspect your current one was compromised. They can issue you a new one right away at the office.

•This is really helpful information. I've been having issues with my CalFresh too but didn't know they could replace stolen benefits. Is there a time limit for reporting theft? My benefits from two months ago disappeared but I thought I just spent it all!

•You should report suspected theft as soon as you notice it, but technically you have up to 90 days to file a claim for stolen benefits. You'll need to fill out a form called "EBT 2259 - Statement of Facts" explaining when and how you believe the benefits were stolen. The county will investigate and make a determination.

•I tried them first actually! They just said the benefits weren't on my card and I needed to talk to my county worker about the replacement process. So frustrating going back and forth.

Try using Claimyr to get through to your worker - it's literally the only way I can ever reach my CalWORKs worker without waiting hours or getting disconnected. You just go to claimyr.com or check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. They'll call the county for you and then call you back when they have a worker on the line. Saved me so much time when I was dealing with a similar situation last month.

•I've never heard of this before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything.

•Yeah it definitely works. I was skeptical too but they got me through to someone in like 30 minutes when I'd been trying for days. Just make sure you have your case info ready when they connect you.

Can I ask how you got your benefits stolen? I'm terrified of this happening to me. Did you report it to the police too or just to the county? I keep hearing about people getting their EBT cards skimmed.

•I'm pretty sure it happened at this small market I went to. The cashier took my card to the back to run it because their machine was "broken" - I should've known better! I filed a police report and they said there's been several cases at that same store. Now I'm super careful about where I use my card.

Update us after you go to the office! I'm curious if they give you a check or actual cash. When I had to get an emergency payment once, they actually gave me a cash voucher that I had to take to the cashier window. The whole process was confusing.

•I went to the office this morning! You were right about the lines - it was packed. After 2.5 hours, I finally talked to someone who gave me a paper check! I was able to cash it at my bank right after. Thanks everyone for the help!

•Glad you got it resolved! Just a tip for the future - if this ever happens again, ask them to put a note in your case file that you prefer EBT replacement rather than check replacement if possible. It's usually faster since you don't have to physically go pick anything up.
