When will 2025 emergency CalFresh allotments be added to EBT cards in California?

Hi everyone! I just heard from my neighbor that California is supposed to be giving extra emergency allotments for CalFresh benefits this month because of the recent wildfires. Has anyone received theirs yet? My regular benefits were loaded on the 10th like usual, but no extra amount showed up. I'm in Riverside County if that matters. Does anyone know the schedule for when these emergency allotments get added to our EBT cards? Really counting on this extra help since my hours got cut at work last month. Thanks!

The emergency allotments for the wildfire-affected areas are being distributed between the 15th and 22nd of this month, according to the notice I received. However, you need to be in one of the officially declared disaster counties to qualify. Riverside isn't fully included - only certain zip codes that were directly impacted by the fires. You can check if your zip code qualifies on the BenefitsCal website under 'Emergency Notifications' or by calling your county office. If you do qualify, the extra amount would be automatically added - you don't need to apply separately.

Thanks for the info! I didn't realize it was only for certain zip codes. I'll definitely check the BenefitsCal site. I'm in 92503 area, and we had a lot of smoke but no actual fires nearby, so maybe I don't qualify after all.

they stoped the emergency allotments after covid ended i think??? i havent gotten any extra since like 2023. unless this is something new for just the fires. did anyone else get a text about this or just me

You're partially right. The pandemic emergency allotments did end in 2023, but this is different - it's specifically for the regions affected by the recent wildfires in Northern and Southern California. The state requested and received USDA approval for a Disaster CalFresh program (D-CalFresh) for households in impacted areas. It's not automatic for everyone on CalFresh - just those in specific disaster-declared zip codes who either lost food, income, or had disaster-related expenses.

I'm SO confused about this!!! I got a notice saying I might qualify but my caseworker told me when I called that I needed to submit a special D-CalFresh application but my friend said she just automatically got extra $$ on her card without doing ANYTHING. Does anyone know which is right? Do we need to apply separately or not?? I don't want to miss out because my family really needs the help right now!!!

Both can actually be correct depending on your situation. If you're already receiving regular CalFresh and live in an affected zip code, you might automatically get a supplement. But if you don't normally get CalFresh OR if you had specific disaster losses (like food spoilage due to power outages, evacuation costs, property damage), you would need to submit a D-CalFresh application to document those losses. The automatic payments are typically smaller than what you might get if you document specific losses through the application process.

I've been trying to call my county office for THREE DAYS to ask about this and keep getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. So frustrating! I'm in one of the affected areas (San Bernardino County, near where the fires were) and haven't received anything yet. Has anyone found a better way to reach a real person at CalFresh? The automated system is useless.

I had the same problem last month! I ended up using this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual CalFresh worker in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold all day. The service calls the office for you and then calls you back when they reach a real person. It was super helpful when I was trying to sort out my recertification problems. Check out their demo video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or their website claimyr.com. Saved me hours of frustration especially since the county lines are extra busy with everyone calling about these emergency benefits.

is this just for calfresh or for calworks too? anyone know?

This particular emergency supplement is for CalFresh only (the food portion of your EBT). CalWORKs has a different disaster relief process called "Immediate Need" where you'd need to specifically apply and state your emergency situation. They're two separate programs with different disaster response procedures, even though benefits for both might come on the same EBT card.

Thanks for sharing! Glad you got your benefits. Sounds like they're actually sending them out now. I'll keep checking my balance.

This whole system is BROKEN!!! I called my county and the worker told me THREE different things in the same conversation about when we'll get the emergency benefits. First she said it was automatic, then she said I needed to apply, then she put me on hold and came back saying I needed to upload documents to prove the losses but couldn't tell me WHICH DOCUMENTS!! I've completely given up hope that we'll ever see this money. The CalFresh system is an absolute JOKE!!

I understand your frustration. Unfortunately, the county workers are sometimes confused about disaster protocols themselves because these emergency programs aren't implemented often. For documenting losses, typically you'd need receipts for replacement food, hotel stays if you evacuated, or repair bills if your home was damaged. If you don't have receipts, a written self-declaration of losses is usually accepted. You might have better luck going in person to your county office with whatever documentation you do have, rather than calling. The in-person workers often have more training on disaster procedures.

UPDATE for everyone: Just saw on the CDSS website that they've extended the application period for Disaster CalFresh through the end of the month. If you're in an affected area and haven't applied yet, you now have until February 28th, 2025. Also, they've posted a list of all eligible zip codes on the BenefitsCal home page under emergency alerts. The supplemental payments for existing CalFresh recipients should all be issued by the 22nd according to the latest update.

Thank you so much for this update! Really helpful to know exactly when to expect it. I checked and my zip code is listed, so I should be getting something soon. Will keep an eye on my balance.
